Harper's POV:

My foot pressed harder on the gas pedal and the speedometer climbed past eighty... eighty-five... ninety, and I knew I should slow down but my heart was beating even faster than the car was moving and I couldn't make myself ease up.

The highway moved past the windows and my hands gripped the steering wheel so tight my knuckles had gone white.

"So what do you think our strategy will be when we get there?"

A voice came from beside me and she had to almost yell it because the music was so loud... some rap song I didn't even know the name of but I'd cranked up the volume until the bass was vibrating through the seats.

I needed something loud.

Something to drown out the voice in my head that kept saying I was making a mistake... that I should have told Hardin about Meridian pulling out, that I should have asked for help instead of speeding down the highway like I had all the answers.

I glanced at her and a smile tugged at the corner of my lips even though nothing about this w

Harper's POV:“Dad?”My eyes strained staring at the man standing on my porch... his clothes were tattered and hanging off his frame, his jaw was clenched so tight I could see the muscles jumping, and his eyes were bloodshot red with pupils so dilated they looked black. His lips were dark... almost black themselves, and I knew that color from the men who used to sit outside the bar where I'd worked washing dishes.Smokers.Heavy smokers who drank even heavier."No." The word came out as a whisper. He wasn't supposed to be here... he'd left Montana years ago, left me alone in this house with nothing, and I'd thought... I'd hoped he was gone for good.I slammed the door in his face.Or tried to.His hand shot out and caught the edge before it could close... shoved it back so hard the wood cracked against the wall."Fuck you!" His teeth were gritted and spit flew from his mouth. "Who do you think you are to lock me out of my house?""This isn't your house anymore." My voice shook but I k

Harper's POV:"Fine."The word ripped out of my throat and my hand was already on the door handle... already shoving it open before I could think about what I was doing.I threw myself out of his car and my feet hit the pavement hard enough to jar my knees. The door slammed behind me.I stood there on the sidewalk with my chest heaving and watched his taillights get smaller... smaller... until they disappeared around a corner and he was gone.He actually left me. My hands started shaking and I pressed them against my thighs trying to make them stop but they wouldn't... they just kept trembling like my whole body was trying to come apart."You told him fine." I said it out loud to the empty street. "You told him to go."But I didn't think he actually would.I thought he'd circle back immediately... thought I'd hear the engine roaring as he came back for me, thought he'd get out and grab me and tell me he was sorry and I was an idiot for getting out in the first place. But the street st

Hardin’s POV:I had prepared for her.Booked a private dinner just for the two of us because I'd noticed she didn't really enjoy her meal at the cafeteria earlier... not with Hailey sitting there staring daggers across the table.I could see it in the way Harper had pushed her food around on her plate... in the way her shoulders had stayed tense the entire time. She wanted to take things slow. She'd told me that and I was trying... God, I was trying so hard to give her space when all I wanted was to pull her close and never let go.So I'd deleted the lunch invitation text."She might think I'm pressuring her." I'd stared at the message on my phone screen for a full minute before hitting delete. But that decision backfired because I couldn't focus on work after that... couldn't concentrate on anything except the fact that Harper was just down the hall and I wasn't with her.I'd called Roman."Come keep me company." I didn't even wait for him to answer before telling him to get his ass

Harper's POV:"Jessica, let's go."I grabbed her hand after what felt like hours of staring at Jeremiah Robinson across the table... just staring while my brain tried to process what he'd just asked me to do.Leave Hardin. Leave Novare Group.Come work for him instead."I'm not a game to be tossed around like this." The words came out to the man sitting across me, firm and clear. "And I definitely will not betray Hardin like this. Never." The decision formed itself in my mind without me even trying... just solidified there like it had been waiting all along for me to realize it.I stood up from the table and pulled Jessica up with me."You're making the wrong decision, Miss Lane."Jeremiah's voice came from behind me and when I glanced back his mouth was curved into this smirk that made me want to throw my water glass at his face."Then let that wrong decision follow me everywhere, Mr. Man." My voice got louder and I didn't care who was staring now. "And hold your account... it's not

Harper's POV:"I'm serious, Harper... please."Connor kept repeating it and his voice had this desperate edge that made my skin crawl because I'd never heard him sound like this before... never heard him beg for anything in all the years I'd known him.I didn't move from where I was standing. Didn't acknowledge him.I Just stared at Jessica like Connor wasn't even there trying to get my attention."She said she's not talking to you, Mr. Man." Jessica stepped between us and her voice came out firm and protective. "If you don't leave her now, we'll really need to call the police."Connor's expression changed fast... went from desperate to angry in the space of a heartbeat."It's none of your business... this is between my wife and I, woman!" His voice got louder and sharper. My wife. The words made something hot and bitter rise in my throat."Are you mad or something?" The response flew out of my mouth before I could stop it. "First off, in case you forgot... or you're delusional... I'm
