Chapter 2

Author: Ann
Ava's eyes immediately filled with tears.

"Ethan, I went too far this time. I've upset Sophia. I'm sorry. I only wanted to do a trial run so nothing would go wrong on her big day. This is all my fault!"

With that, she lunged toward the corridor window.

Ethan grabbed her around the waist just in time.

"Don't talk like that. You were only trying to help."

His face hardened as he turned to me.

"Sophia, you didn't object earlier. Why are you causing a scene now? Any decent person would show some compassion. Are you going to apologize to Ava or not?"

I'd heard that before.

How many times had we done this?

At first, I would argue. I'd tell him how unfair he was being.

But the same thing happened so many times that eventually, I stopped fighting and simply gave in.

Not anymore. I had had enough.

I smiled coldly.

"You're right. My mistake."

My mistake was wasting five years in this mess, giving Ethan chance after chance and fooling myself into believing he might change.

Ethan raised an eyebrow, suspicion flashing across his face.

I turned to leave, but he reached for me.

Just then, Ava's legs gave out, and she collapsed into his arms.

"Ouch! Ethan!"

Ethan instinctively looked down.

Ava looked up at the exact same moment. Their lips met.

The room erupted in cheers.

I looked back at them.

It felt like being slapped across the face a hundred times.

Three seconds passed before Ethan finally snapped out of it and pulled away.

When he saw me, he quickly wiped his mouth.

"Sophia..."

I pulled off the engagement ring he'd given me and threw it at him.

"A wedding gift. Goodbye."

My eyes stung as I hurried toward the exit, but Ethan chased me down and grabbed me by the shoulders.

"Sophia, that's enough!"

I froze. His next words chilled me to the bone.

"You say you're sorry and then act like this. Aren't you tired of making a scene? I've told you a hundred times that this wedding with Ava means nothing.

"You threw my engagement ring back at me? Are you trying to humiliate me?

"You're the petty one who can't stand me taking care of Ava, and now you want to drag both our names through the mud!"

The pain was so sharp that my tears dried up.

So he hadn't chased me because he was afraid of losing me.

He'd chased me down just to blame me.

It had been exactly the same during the hurricane. The entire city had been placed under an emergency alert.

Worried about Ava, he had spent three days and nights by her side.

Only after the danger was over had he remembered to call me.

Alone in the apartment, I had sprained my ankle and waited too long to get treatment. I still couldn't wear heels.

And somehow, Ethan had still found a way to justify himself.

I stepped back. I didn't even have the energy to be angry anymore.

"Ethan, do whatever you like."

He clearly hadn't expected me to stop arguing. His tone immediately softened.

"Sophia, you have to believe me. You're the only one I love. Let's both take a step back and forget about what happened. Ava has always been sensitive and fragile. Be the bigger person."

I'd heard those excuses so many times that they meant nothing to me anymore.

Ava was fragile, so I had to be the bigger person.

She had taken over the wedding I'd spent six months planning.

She had worn the dress I'd flown to France to have made.

The man I'd loved for five years and planned to spend my life with had kissed her right in front of me.

And after all that, Ethan still wanted me to be the bigger person?

My smile widened.

"Sure. I'll be the bigger person. Ethan, let's break up. Then you can spend the rest of your life taking care of her."

Before I'd even finished speaking, Ava called down from upstairs.

"Ethan, I don't feel well."

Ethan's expression changed, and he immediately headed upstairs.

"Sophia, don't worry, you're the only wife I'll ever have! If you're upset today, go shopping. I'll pay for whatever you buy. I'll go sit with Ava first. Have fun."

Then he hurried upstairs without even looking back.

I watched him disappear and realized I'd seen this exact scene countless times before.

All those sweet promises had never been about loving me. They were just words meant to shut me up so he could run back to Ava.

He hadn't even bothered to look back at me.

And if I went shopping, he'd only buy Ava something even better.

He could never let Ava think she came second to me.

Forget it.

Why am I still standing in this cesspool, fighting another woman over a man like him?

I'm done.

Ethan, this is goodbye. From now on, our lives have nothing to do with each other.

"Lucas, I think one of the children still hasn't arrived. You start class. I'll go check the road."Lucas Bennett hurried over."Two more people have been bitten by snakes lately. I'll go. I wanted to do something that mattered. That was when I ran into an old high school friend, Lucas. He had given up his place in the family business and joined an international aid organization. He invited me to join him as a volunteer teacher for children in underserved communities. So the two of us went to Africa first, then South America, and now Southeast Asia. After traveling thousands of miles, it felt like the whole world had opened up before me.And somehow, the bigger the world became, the smaller my old pain

Ava burst into wild laughter and threw herself at Ethan. He shoved her to the floor."Ava, what is wrong with you?""I went crazy years ago! I've stayed by your side all this time because you're the only man I've ever wanted!"And you, Ethan—are you really going to tell me you never noticed? That you didn't enjoy having me depend on you? Sophia and I were fighting over you. Don't tell me you didn't love every second of it!"You said our wedding was just make-believe. But when you stood beside me as the groom, are you saying you weren't happy at all? And now you're blaming me? How dare you?"Now that Ava had finally dropped the act, Ethan felt strangely calm.He knew he had been wrong. Terribly, horribly wrong.Ever since Ava's parents died in a crash ten years ago, he had pitied the girl he'd always thought of as a little sister. He had never imagined his pity would bring them here. His expression turned cold, as if Ava were nothing more than a stranger.Ava panicked. She had risked ev

"Sophia?"Ethan called out again and again. No one answered. His shoulders slumped. When he turned around, he saw a letter on the entryway table.Did Sophia leave this for me?He picked it up, puzzled.Ava stood behind him, secretly delighted. Then she saw the letter. Ava seemed to remember something, and her face drained of color. But it was too late.Ethan had already read every word."Ms. Taylor, the fake bipolar disorder report you ordered is ready. Why haven't you paid the rest of the money? Pay up, or I'll send the report to Mr. Carter."Ethan's hands began to shake. His eyes widened in disbelief.Rachel's words echoed through his head."There is nothing wrong with Ms. Taylor. I've practiced in this field for years and have never once heard of this doctor."The letter slipped from his fingers.Slowly, stiffly, he turned to look at Ava.Memories from the past five years flooded his mind.Rachel had been telling the truth.Ava was never sick.Every helpless act, every desperate ple

Rachel said pointedly, "Ms. Taylor showed me her Instagram earlier. That was quite a wedding.""That wedding was fake. Ava wanted a fantasy ceremony—just a game of make-believe. I have a real partner."Rachel raised an eyebrow."Then your partner is remarkably generous."Ethan was speechless.Rachel seemed to understand. A hint of amusement flashed in her eyes."Mr. Carter, has Ms. Taylor become more and more dependent on you over the years? And have you given in to her every time?"Ethan's heart sank.He couldn't help defending himself."We've known each other since childhood. We're as close as siblings, even if we aren't related by blood."Rachel gave a short laugh."And does your partner see it that way? Does anyone else see it that way? More importantly, does Ms. Taylor see it that way?"When she showed me those wedding photos, she looked every bit the happy bride."Ethan felt like he'd been struck by lightning. He stood abruptly and struggled to keep his voice calm."You've got it

Ethan called another dozen times.Still no answer. His texts went unanswered too. Then he realized she'd blocked him.He panicked. But a moment later, he forced himself to calm down. This is just another one of Sophia's tantrums. There had been the hurricane. He'd gone to check on Ava and ended up trapped at her place for three days.Sophia had reacted the same way afterward, ignoring him for two weeks and even threatening to leave him.But she hadn't.She loves him too much to actually leave. That thought put him at ease. He started ordering flowers and gifts for her.If she wouldn't take his calls, he'd go to her himself.A few sweet words had always been enough to win Sophia back. After ordering the flowers, Ethan frowned and contacted a psychiatrist.Ava couldn't keep going like this. I flew straight to Europe. My former labmate picked me up at the airport. We dropped off my luggage, then headed straight to the lab.I had turned down his offer before because I couldn't bring myself to leave Ethan. Now that I was finally here, he was thrilled.Back in the States, Ethan couldn't get my pale face and bitter smile out of his head.It kept haunting him.The more he thought about it, the more uneasy he became. In the end, he called off the IVF.Ava pouted, clearly upset."Ethan, you're afraid of upsetting Sophia, aren't you? Forget it. I can't be the reason the two of you are unhappy."She turned away in a daze, missed a step, and tumbled down the stairs.Ethan rushed over to help her and called for a doctor, worry written all over his face."Watch where you're going. We've gone too far this time. Sophia is furious. I can't keep putting your feelings first."Ava cried harder."So once Sophia has a child, will you stop seeing me altogether?"Ethan quickly reassured her."O
