Chapter 3

Penulis: Madam Fenghuo
The next day, I went to the family council.

Gordon, one of the capos who handled council business, was there too. As soon as he saw me, he walked over and looked me up and down.

"Ms. Sloane, I got a phone call last night.

"Someone raised concerns about your character. They said you're falsely accusing a family member of destroying your application.

"Do you have anything to say?"

I stood there quietly and knew right away what was going on.

Before I could speak, I saw Beth and Colton come out from inside, with Diane standing beside them.

Beth's eyes were red and swollen. The second she saw me, she ducked behind Colton.

When she did that, Diane's face darkened.

"Look at what you've done to our Beth. She's terrified!

"Let me tell you something. If you don't apologize today, you'll regret it!"

Diane said it like a threat.

Colton stood beside her with a hand on Beth's shoulder and gave me a weary look. "Monica, it's not too late to apologize to her.

"If you apologize now, I'll withdraw the complaint."

As I listened, my fingers twitched. So he was the one who'd reported me.

Just then, Gordon stepped in, glanced around at all of us, and asked me, "Ms. Sloane, what do you say to these accusations of threats and false claims?

"In this family, that's a serious offense. We don't turn on our own."

Before I could say anything, Colton answered for me. "That's just how Monica is. We've been together a long time. I know her well.

"If she says she'll do something, she'll do it."

I looked at Colton, and all I felt was disgust.

He said, "She goes to extremes. She's capable of anything. You have to protect my sister.

"My sister only spilled something on the papers by accident, and Monica took them with her anyway.

"She threatened my sister right in front of me. I was afraid she'd do something to Beth, so I came here first."

When he finished, Gordon turned his eyes on me.

I opened my mouth, but before I could say anything, Beth started crying.

"I didn't mean to. I never wanted to ruin Monica's papers. My hand was shaking, and I couldn't hold the wine bottle steady.

"I know I was wrong, and I already admitted it. But I never thought Monica would threaten me. I was so scared I couldn't sleep all night."

Then she looked at me. "Monica, please don't hurt me.

"I'll apologize to you."

Diane's face hardened with every word.

"I didn't make any malicious accusations. She ruined the application. That's a fact, and that's all."

That was all I said.

But Diane jumped right in to accuse me. "You threatened her, and because of you, our Beth didn't sleep all night! You did it on purpose!

"You want her dead!

"There's nothing to look into. Throw her out of the family right now. Someone like her staying in the family is bad for all of us!"

Colton stood beside her and listened quietly. From beginning to end, he didn't say a single word in my defense. He even pulled Beth behind him, angling his right shoulder to shield her.

Seeing that, I felt even colder inside.

"Colton, let me ask you something. Is that really what happened?" My voice was quiet.

Colton looked into my eyes and seemed a little flustered. But after Beth tugged on him, his expression hardened.

"Monica, you brought all this on yourself.

"If you'd just apologized to Beth last night, none of this would have happened! I didn't have a choice.

"I'm doing this for your own good, Monica."

I asked, "For my own good?"

That made me laugh.

He came closer and looked down at me. "I can't watch you keep going down the wrong path. Apologize now, and this ends here.

"I'll talk to Beth for you and get her to forgive you.

"You can apply to the council again next year."

Watching him play the decent man made my stomach churn.

"You're doing it for me?" I asked.

Colton nodded.

I took a breath, turned straight to Gordon, and pointed at Beth. "She didn't spill it by accident. The signatures were soaked through. If it had really been an accident, the ink wouldn't have smeared this badly. And if she spilled it by accident, why didn't she wipe it up right away?!"

My voice was loud, and everyone in the hall turned to look at me.

I saw Beth's face go pale.

Declan had brought a dozen or so of the family's bodyguards. The moment they walked in, they seized Colton and Beth. Colton panicked. "Say something! Monica!"He was babbling now, scrambling to explain. "It's not like that! The message board stuff has nothing to do with me!"Beth did all of it! I'm the victim here!"I've always been loyal to the family!"The more Colton said, the more frantic he got, and Beth was explaining herself beside him too."It's got nothing to do with me! Mr. Shaw! It was that woman who posted about Ms. Sloane on the message board!"I ruined the application because he told me to."It's not my fault! It has nothing to do with me!"Beth's voice kept rising. Her eyes were wild with panic, and her hands wouldn't stop waving. When Diane heard what Beth said, she went straight up and slapped her. "You bitch! You're the one who ruined my son's future!"Mr. Shaw, don't listen to her!"The whole place was chaos. Declan frowned and half raised his hand to cut everyone of

Colton's face went white the moment I said it, and he stared at me in disbelief. My face stayed blank as I went on. "Oh, and his sister smeared me on the family's private message board. I've already sent the evidence to your email. Please take a look."Beth lost it and lunged at me to grab my phone.I ended the call and held it up out of her reach. "Back off!"I'm on the council. Go ahead, lay a finger on me and see what happens."Beth turned and threw herself at Colton. "Colton, do something! This has nothing to do with me. You went along with all of it!"The moment she said it, Colton shoved her away."Don't come crying to me!"This is all on you!"There was nothing left of Colton's usual gentleness. His eyes were cold.Beth stared at him in disbelief. His look frightened her so much she kept backing away.Gordon stepped aside to take a call and learned that Declan had already sent his men. He waved the bodyguards back. Then Diane suddenly appeared at the entrance to the hall. Her fa

Hatred flashed in Colton's eyes at my words. He glared at me like he wanted to swallow me whole. The bodyguards were closing in, but they hadn't touched him yet.He grabbed Gordon's shoulders in a panic. "If that's how it is, then Monica submitting my application for me makes her an accomplice!"She's the one who got my forms stamped too!"She ran around and did everything for me. The council rules say you have to submit your own application."She helped me, so that means she helped me cheat!"None of what Colton said made sense, but it was true that applicants were supposed to submit their own papers, and on that point, he'd broken the rules too.Gordon looked at me, a frown creasing his forehead."Ms. Sloane, how do you explain this?"Council applications have to be submitted by the applicant."Beth saw her opening and jumped in. "Exactly, she should be punished too. She knew perfectly well you have to submit your own application!"She even got my brother's forms stamped for him! But

Beth still had that same pitiful look. Her eyes were red. Tears fell before she even opened her mouth."Colton, I didn't know it was yours."I thought it was hers. It's not my fault."If she hadn't put your application in her own envelope, none of this would have happened."It's all her fault. I never meant to hurt you."I did it all for you."Her grip on his hand kept tightening. Tears fell onto the back of his hand, and her voice kept shaking. But now Colton had run out of patience. He shoved Beth away and turned on her."You did this?!"You did something like this, and you have the nerve to say it was for me!""Keep it down. If you have something to settle, take it outside!" Gordon snapped.Everyone started talking. "How can people like this even exist!"Someone else said, "They totally deserve it. They brought all this on themselves."A third voice added, "Good thing someone like him didn't get on the council. Who knows how many people would've gotten hurt."Hearing that, Colton's

I set the stack of wine-stained papers down on the table. The whole room went silent. Every eye was on those papers, and the people in the back rows stood up to get a closer look.Colton's face went white. His hand shook. He touched the papers, then pulled back."That's impossible! Monica, you think you can fool me like this?"You must have done something. You didn't make the council yourself, so now you're humiliating me in front of everyone, is that it?"He was talking fast, and his voice rose with every word.Everyone around us stood up to look at me, and someone in the crowd whispered, "What could she possibly have done to pull this off?"Another voice asked, "Is she really humiliating him at an event like this?"The voices in the crowd grew louder.I looked at Colton, and my gaze softened. "I'm not fooling you."I spent days getting three capos to sign your application. I hadn't submitted it yet."Your sweet little sister threw your future away."Colton's application had taken lon

Beth tumbled down the steps, and her scream made Diane go white with terror."Beth!"I kept my hands in my coat pockets and slowly looked over.Beth lay at the bottom of the steps, her shoulders shaking. Diane rushed over, frantic, to help her up, then turned and screamed at me. "You bitch!"How can you be so cruel!"What did Beth ever do to you that you'd hurt her like this?"I think you want her dead!"I said slowly, "What does that have to do with me? She fell on her own. My hands have been in my pockets the whole time. I never took them out."Beth cried even harder. "Monica, you pushed me because you were angry, and I don't blame you. But please don't talk to my mom like that."I just wanted to talk to you. I never thought you'd..."The more Beth said, the more wounded she looked. She bit her lip as tears kept streaming down. That made Diane even angrier. She charged up and slapped me across the face.My hands were still in my pockets.
