Chapter 3

Author: Old Dog
Opal bit her lip and nodded.

A female officer took her into the restroom on the first floor.

After a moment, the door opened. Opal came out with red eyes and red marks on her wrist where Dean had grabbed her.

The officer said, "She does have a burn scar on the inside of her left thigh. The scar is at least ten years old."

My knees buckled, and I nearly collapsed.

The scar matched.

The face matched.

The mole matched.

Every piece of evidence that could prove she was "Opal Lane" matched perfectly.

But… I knew she was not "Opal Lane".

Sloane immediately ran forward and pointed at me, her voice shaking. "Tommy, you've gone too far! How is Opal supposed to face anyone after this? What's her fiancé going to think of her?"

Zane sighed again. "Tommy, just let it be. Opal's part of a wealthy family now. You're not good enough for her anymore."

At that moment, another luxury car stopped outside the mansion.

A man and woman, both middle-aged, got out and hurried over.

The man wore a dark gray suit. His hair was perfectly combed, and his stern features gave him a commanding presence. The woman held his arm. She wore a beige-colored outfit with perfect makeup, making her look younger than fifty.

They were Victor and Rochelle Gomez, Opal's birth parents.

Victor approached Marcus, polite yet commanding. "I'm sorry, officer. We were held up on the way here. Have you gotten to the bottom of this?"

His eyes then swept over me without much reaction. "You're Tommy?"

I ignored him as I turned to Marcus. "Captain, I want a DNA test."

"What?" Marcus raised an eyebrow.

"A DNA test," I repeated. "If the DNA matches as well, I'll check myself into a psychiatric hospital."

Victor let out a cold laugh. "DNA? We already did that when we recognized her as our daughter."

He then took out his phone and opened the digital test report and handed it to Marcus.

Rochelle then said to me, "I know about your history with Opal, but that's all in the past. She has a new life and a new family now. What you're doing is unfair to her."

Sloane grew anxious too. "Will you only be happy when you've ruined her?"

"Do it again," I insisted. "With the police watching."

Victor frowned tightly. "Fine. But once the results come back, this won't end with a simple apology."

Marcus called in a medical examiner.

The medical examiner collected blood samples from Victor, Rochelle, and Opal, then said, "The results will take thirty minutes."

The wait dragged on as if someone had paused time. I crouched on the steps outside the mansion, hugging my knees as my whole body trembled.

Half an hour later, the medical examiner handed the report to Marcus.

Marcus glanced at it and walked over before throwing the report down in front of me. "What do you have to say now?!"

My hands shook as I picked them up.

There it was… In black and white, even.

The probability that Opal was their biological daughter was 99.99 percent.

My hands began to shake harder.

Marcus signaled to an officer, who stepped forward and handcuffed me. "Contact the Behavioral Health Unit and give him a preliminary screening."

Two officers took me by the arms and walked me toward the police car. The night breeze slipped down my collar, sending a chill along my spine.

Behind me, I heard Sloane say, "He's finally gone. How did that boy end up like this..."

Zane sighed as well.

Victor shook Marcus's hand and murmured his thanks.

I turned around and looked. Opal stood in the mansion doorway with her arm linked with Rochelle's. Light shone from behind her, bathing her in a warm golden glow.

She looked at me calmly, as if I was a stranger. No… Worse than a stranger. She looked at me as if I was trash that had finally been cleared away.

"Get in." The officer opened the car door.

As I bent down, my hand touched the phone in my pocket. My eyes widened.

"Captain," I said, "look at this."

I opened the video and handed my phone to Marcus.

He took it.

At first, his face showed nothing, as if he were looking at something ordinary. Then he blinked, and he looked up at Opal and the others in horror.

"Nobody move! Take all of them into custody! Now!" Then he shouted to the officers by the police car, "Call headquarters for backup!"

"The defendant, Sloane Lane, is found guilty of first-degree murder, and sentenced to fifteen years in prison…" Sloane collapsed to the floor, sobbing so hard she could not speak. While Zane was led away, he looked back at me. There was something in that glance. Regret, perhaps. Or relief. I did not know. I did not want to know. The judge continued. "The defendant, Zane Lane, was found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to twelve years in prison." The gavel fell and the trial was over. I stood up and walked out of the courtroom. The sunlight was dazzling… - The funeral home hallway was quiet except for my footsteps and a staff member. The staff led me into a room and pointed to a cart by the wall, and said, "These are Ms. Lane's ashes." The urn was black, small, and light. I took it in both hands and held it in my arms. After leaving the funeral home, I took a cab. "Where to?" the driver asked. "The train station." - The train ride lasted

I closed the folder and asked Marcus, "When's the trial?" "Next month at the earliest," Marcus said. I nodded. Before I left, I went to the medical examiner's office. The medical examiner who met me was a young woman with glasses and a quiet voice. She led me into a small room and handed me a list. "These are Opal's belongings." On the list was a phone, a necklace, and a jacket. The phone was shattered, its screen cracked like a spiderweb. The medical examiner said it had fallen while Opal struggled on the operating table. Struggled… She had struggled on that operating table. The necklace was a thin silver chain with a small, opal pendant. I had given it to her for her eighteenth birthday. She had worn it ever since and had never taken it off. I picked up the necklace and closed my hand around it. The opal pendant warmed in my palm, as if it were responding to my touch. The jacket was hers. It was a denim jacket that had already faded from washing too many times w

Marcus continued to explain to me."Victor and Rochelle's youngest daughter, Emma Gomez, had the Rh-null blood type. Unfortunately, she had dilated cardiomyopathy. It meant that the heart had gotten bigger and could not pump blood properly. "She needed a heart transplant. However, they had waited three years without finding a suitable donor." Marcus then tapped his fingers lightly against the table. "Opal was in a minor car accident and taken to the hospital. A routine blood test showed that she had Rh-null blood. "Somehow, the Gomezes found out and got a detailed compatibility report for Opal. Her heart was a perfect match. Fewer than ten people in the world would have been compatible. "Victor's family approached Opal's adoptive parents. They offered three hundred thousand dollars. In exchange, her adoptive parents had to cooperate with the fake reunion, let Victor and Rochelle take her away, and sign an organ donation consent form." His fingers stopped. "They signed it

The basement was a wine cellar. That was what the first search had concluded. But this time, the officers went downstairs and didn't come back for a long while. Marcus's radio crackled. "Captain, you need to come down and see this." The tremor in the officer's voice told me something was wrong. Marcus walked toward the basement entrance, and I followed him down the stairs. The staircase was long, the lights were dim, and the walls were cold. The air grew colder with every step. It was not the natural chill of a basement. It was a different kind of cold. It was something that came from machines… Something artificial. It was cold air from refrigeration. Someone was running some sort of powerful cooling equipment down here. There was a door at the bottom of the stairs, and it was already opened. An officer waited in the doorway, his face pale. I walked inside. The basement was huge, even larger than the living room above. Wine racks lined the walls and were filled

The instant "Opal" took the glass, someone else's hand entered the edge of the frame. It held another glass. The angle made it almost impossible to see without enlarging the image. "Someone was switching her glass," the technician said, "every single time." Marcus stared at the screen without speaking. In the distance, red and blue lights drew closer through the darkness. Backup had finally arrived. Three police cars stopped outside the manor house and their doors opened at the same time. A dozen or so officers climbed out. The officer in charge ran over. "Captain, what are your orders?" Marcus turned toward the people outside the mansion. "Secure everyone at the scene. Question them separately. Don't let them communicate. Search the entire estate. Every room and every corner. Keep your eyes open." "One more thing." He paused. "Contact headquarters and have them deliver a FINDER over." FINDER, or "Finding Individuals for Disaster and Emergency Response", was a device

Everyone fell silent for a moment. The silence was so unnatural that even the wind seemed to stop. Then all hell broke loose. "What is the meaning of this?" Victor's expression froze. "Captain, what's this supposed to mean?!" Rochelle pulled her husband's arm with startling speed, a reaction that did not fit her status as a wealthy lady. She said nothing, but her eyes changed. It was not fear, but it was calculation, as if she were quickly deciding whether there was still a way out. Opal stood perfectly still. Unlike the others, she showed no surprise or anger. She simply stood there, her expression calm… Too calm. So calm that it looked unnatural. Dean reacted first. He shook off Opal's hand, his voice rising. "No! Arrest her! Why are you arresting me? I have nothing to do with this! I don't know anything!" No one paid him any attention. Marcus gripped my phone, his gaze moving from Victor to Rochelle, then from Rochelle to Opal. He said nothing else. He was wait
