Chapter 3

Author: Cutie
So I begged Lisa to come with me.

I humbled myself and begged her three times, and it took her two whole days to finally agree.

But she then said she was too busy with work and couldn't leave until the first day of the holidays at the earliest.

Holidays meant jammed highways, so I could only try to get train tickets.

These past few days, I'd been burning with anxiety, worried Grandma wouldn't make it, yet I still tried to be understanding of Lisa's difficulties.

I only found out today that she wasn't busy at all.

She just believed what Henry said, decided I was lying, and deliberately stalled me.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. I lowered my head and put down the cup.

Before turning around, I suddenly remembered something important.

"Lisa, at our engagement party last year, Grandma gave you a brooch, right? That's a keepsake from Grandpa. Give it back to me, I want to take it home."

Lisa didn't reply immediately.

She picked up my cup, took a sip, then casually said: "Henry liked it, so I gave it to him."

I froze.

Henry let out a weak "Ah!", then said, "I… I didn't know that brooch was so important. I accidentally lost it."

I took a step forward, my voice completely changing pitch. "You lost it? Where did you lose it?!"

Lisa frowned. "Why are you yelling? It's just a brooch."

The air in the living room dropped to freezing point. Henry bit his lip.

I turned to stare at Lisa. "It's not just a brooch. It's a keepsake from Grandpa!"

"I know, but your grandmother said it was a gift for her granddaughter-in-law when she gave it to me. Once it's given, it's mine, and I can give it to whoever I want."

I could never have expected her to be so unreasonable.

I clenched my fists and hardened my tone. "We haven't gotten married yet, so it's not yours yet. You must return it to me, or I'm calling off the engagement."

Lisa instantly turned livid.

"Jeffrey, you're getting mad at me over a stupid brooch? It's not like Henry lost it on purpose! I can't believe you're so petty!"

Henry's eyes reddened, his voice soft and weak. "Ms. Jetrow, please don't get mad at Mr. Woods. It's my fault for not taking good care of the brooch..."

Lisa looked back at him. "This has nothing to do with you. Once it was given to me, it was mine. I gave it to you, so it was yours. If you lost it, you lost it."

I looked at her gloomy face. "Lisa, my grandpa's keepsake is lost, and you think it's no big deal?"

"It couldn't be helped. What do you want Henry to do? Jeffrey, stop being so unreasonable."

Oh, I'm unreasonable?

Grandpa's keepsake was lost, yet she called me unreasonable.

I suddenly realized how much she had changed.

She wasn't like this before.

The first year we got together, when Grandma heard I was dating someone, she personally knitted a pair of gloves and sent it to Lisa.

Lisa treated them like prized treasures. She even posted them on her social media, saying she couldn't bear to wear them because she didn't want to get them dirty.

She also ate the wild vegetables and pickles my aunt sent with great relish, and even took them to the office for lunch.

When someone tried to take a bite, she guarded them fiercely, saying they were proof of my relatives' approval of her.

Back then, she treasured everything my family gave her.

But ever since she hired Henry as her assistant, she asked my relatives to stop sending her local products.

She said those things made her look like a country bumpkin.

Any good food we had, we must save a portion for Henry, and if I voiced the slightest protest, she'd accuse me of being petty.

And now, she even gave away Grandpa's brooch without my permission.

Henry lost it, but she called me unreasonable.

Or maybe, she hadn't changed.

I had just become less important to her.

"Lisa, this is not a joke."

I said softly. "If the brooch is gone, then it's over between us."

She stared at me, her lips pressed tightly together.

"You're really going to break off our engagement over a brooch?"

"I told you, it's not just a brooch."

"Are you done throwing a tantrum?!"

She suddenly let out a roar, startling Henry into backing away holding tightly to the cheap jacket.

Give it back to me!"All their coworkers looked over.Henry stood back up holding the table, looking wronged."Ms. Jetrow, I don't remember where I threw it."Lisa's eye twitched."Threw it? Didn't you say you lost it? So you threw it away on purpose."Henry felt even more guilty."I... no, I accidentally lost it..."Lisa kicked the table leg, frightening Henry."Tell me the truth!""I... I... The day you gave it to me, I casually threw it out the cab window on the ride home. I don't know where it is now. There's no way I can return it..."Lisa froze. She thought Henry might have sold it or kept it. At worst, she thought he might have left it somewhere and forgotten about it.She ne

In my dizziness, I noticed someone standing at the doorway."Jeffrey..."I wiped my tears and saw Lisa stumble in."Get out!"I roared, putting all my strength into it.She stopped abruptly."Jeffrey, listen to me, I didn't know Grandma was critically ill, I thought...""You thought what? You thought I was lying to you?! Lisa, do you have no conscience? How could I possibly lie about Grandma dying?!""But... Henry said… Your cousin, he...""I don't even have a male cousin!"After saying that, my vision went black, and I swayed backward.Susan immediately supported me and frantically rubbed my temples."Jeffrey, are you alright? She picked up her phone, then realized that she had messaged the wrong person.Instead of Jeffrey, she had sent the text to Jeffrey's grandmother. The first year they started dating, she had begged Jeffrey for his grandmother's contact on WhatsApp.Knowing his grandmother was elderly, Lisa often sent voice messages to coax her into taking her medicine. When his grandmother knitted her gloves, she even posted about it on her social media, hoping to make his grandmother happy. But later, when she started her own business and got busy, she muted his grandmother's WhatsApp messages and gradually forgot about it.Lisa quickly tapped open the chat. Then,

They arrived at Henry's hometown on the afternoon of the second day.She was so tired she could barely keep her eyes open, yawning twice as soon as they parked outside his parents' home.Henry said weakly, "Thank you for driving me back, Ms. Jetrow. I promise I'll get my driver's license as soon as I get back to the city. I'll drive you around from then on."Lisa said nothing.Driving was originally an assistant's duty. She'd been considerate because he was a fresh graduate, so she'd distributed his tasks to others and driven herself..."Ms. Jetrow, actually, there's something I've been wanting to tell you..."He looked hesitant.Lisa turned to him, but before she could ask what it was, the front door opened.A house full of men, women, and children swarmed out, excitedly crowding around the car."Is this Henry's girlfriend's car? It's a luxury car! It must have cost a fortune!""Hey, hey, don't touch it! If you break it, you have to pay!""Don't worry, I'm sure Henry's gir

Lisa paused, then let the machine scan her ID again. But it still showed no ticket information. The staff member offered a polite smile and extended a hand."Ma'am, could you please show me your purchase record? I'll help you check if it's a system error or if you had accidentally cancelled the ticket."Lisa shook her head absent-mindedly."I wasn't the one who bought them."The staff turned to Henry:"What about you, sir...?"Henry bit his lower lip and said nothing. They weren't the ones who bought the tickets, so of course they had no record.Suddenly, Lisa recalled something. She tapped open her unread messages and scrolled down.Besides ads, there were two messages from a ticketing app. She had ignored them, thinking they were just successful purchase notifications. But now that she thought about it, she'd already received a success purchase notification right after buying the tickets with Jeffrey's phone, so what were these two messages?"Ms. Jetrow, your tickets ha

"Ms. Jetrow, please don't get mad... Mr. Woods, how much is the brooch? I'll pay you back. I'll go borrow the money right now..."I stood still."I'm not throwing a tantrum."Lisa's entire face tightened. I oversaw the renovation and personally picked out every single piece of furniture. On moving day, she hugged me tightly and wouldn't let go for anything. We dreamed of planting flowers and sharing meals in this house. The middle room would be for the kids, and the small room would be our shared study.Back then, she said, "This is our home."Now, she said it was her house, and told me to scram.I swallowed the lump in my throat and walked back to the bedroom as if treading on broken glass. All my luggage had already been sent away, so there were only a few small items left.
