Evelyn's POV

The sun was up by the time I got to the airport. The lines were huge.

Just as I was handing over my boarding pass, my phone vibrated.

I didn't even get a word in before Ethan's shrill, crying voice blasted through the phone.

"I want bagels! The toasted ones! Now!"

I moved the phone away from my ear.

The same five-year-old who told me I wasn't good enough last night now wanted me to make him breakfast.

He didn't want his mom; he just wanted his favorite food.

"Come home right now!" he screamed between sobs. "You're never here! Charlotte says a good mommy is always home! You're a bad mommy!"

"Charlotte says." Always Charlotte.

She gave him the candy I didn't allow and let him play the games I said no to. She was always the "nice" one, while I was the one with the rules.

And the whole pack—from the Elders to the help—just let it happen. They all thought she was a better fit for Adrian anyway.

Even my own son thought I was the villain.

I heard some noise in the background, then Adrian's voice, deep and annoyed.

"Evelyn, where's breakfast? Where are you?"

"Adrian, the bond is broken," I said, my voice completely flat.

"Don't call me again."

I hung up and turned off the phone.

As the plane took off, I felt the weight of the last six years drop away.

"Don't look back," I told myself.

Five Years Later. St. Aurelia Medical Center.

Theodore's office still smelled like old books and bleach.

I put a thermal bag on his desk. The deep amber liquid caught the warm light through the glass, blending evening primrose, silverleaf thyme, and a guiding herb I had blended myself.

"Here are the tinctures for that patient. Three times a day for a week. The dosage is on the jars."

Theodore looked at the labels, his eyes widening. "You can't buy this stuff anywhere, Evelyn."

"That's because I made it myself."

He lined them up and looked at me. "Evelyn, since you're staying in town..."

"The new show starts filming soon. I'm the lead writer," I said, zipping up my bag. "I've got things to handle."

"That's not what I meant." He sighed. "The hospital needs someone to run the rehab wing. You're too talented to just be writing..."

"Theodore," I interrupted. "I love my job. You don't need to fix my life."

He started to say something else, but my phone rang.

It was my friend Lila. I waved goodbye and headed for the elevator. "I'm heading out. Make sure the patient drinks the tea before it gets cold."

As I walked into the elevator, I could still hear Theodore's helpless chuckle.

The elevator stopped halfway down.

The doors opened, and a huge shadow blocked the light.

I didn't look up. My phone buzzed again—a text from Lila, "Hey honey, I can't make it, but I sent my boyfriend to pick you up. He's almost there."

"No rush, babe," I muttered to myself.

I put my phone away, still not looking at the man standing there.

But I knew that scent. Cold, heavy, suffocating. An Alpha.

We hit the first floor.

I finally looked up.

Adrian. He was in a sharp navy suit, hair shorter than before. He looked harder, older, and a lot more intense.

He was staring at me like he'd seen a ghost.

"Excuse me."

I tried to brush past him.

Suddenly, his hand clamped onto my wrist. It hurt.

I was yanked to a halt, forced to stop, his aura making my calves start to tremble.

"Five years," he growled, his voice thick with rage. "You don't think you owe me an explanation?"

I looked at his hand, then let my own wolf's power flare up. It slammed into his, instantly pinning his Alpha aura down.

"Owe you?" I looked him in the eye. "For what? You're my ex, Adrian. The man I rejected. Remember?"

I laughed at the shock on his face.

"The bond is gone. My wolf is fine without you."

He winced, his jaw tightening.

"As Ethan's father, I have a right to know where you've been."

I tried to pull away, but he held on tighter.

So I stopped fighting and looked him dead in the eyes.

"I walked away from the kid too," I said, enunciating every word. "What makes you think you matter?"

"Evelyn!" He looked like he was about to explode.

Just then, a car pulled up and honked.

A handsome guy leaned out the window. "Evelyn! Here!"

Adrian lost it. "Is this why you left? For him?"

Evelyn's POVHolding Nora's hand, I stopped in my tracks. Looking at Charlotte blocking my path, I felt nothing but sheer amusement."Is there something else?"Charlotte took two steps toward me, her face sporting a tight smile. The sweet, gentle tone she used around Ethan was completely gone."Evelyn, I want to know what your plans are now that you're back in Lunaris City. Are you planning a permanent stay?"I casually brushed a stray lock of hair away from my face as the cold wind whipped past. "You know, I have a friend whose apartment sits right at the edge of her pack's territory. The hygiene there is pretty terrible. Flies and pests keep buzzing around, driving her absolutely crazy."A flash of malice crossed Charlotte's eyes, her patience wearing thin. "Evelyn, answer my question. What does your friend's trash problem have to do with me?""Exactly." I shrugged, my tone completely deadpan. "What does it have to do with you?"It took her a solid three seconds to realize I'd just

Evelyn's POVI looked over at Ethan, who was standing a few feet away, staring blankly up at a tree. I turned back to Nora. "Weren't you two just playing? What do you need, baby?"Nora grabbed my hand and yanked me forward, pointing at the branches above Ethan."Mommy, hurry! I found a green-bean tree!" she yelled, her eyes flashing like stars. "Let's pick them for dinner!"I stumbled a bit as she dragged me along, forcing myself to catch up."Sweetie, those aren't green beans," I said, kneeling down to look her in the eye. "That's a catawba tree. You can't eat the fruit."Nora's shoulders slumped instantly. Her lip pouted, her whole face scrunching up in disappointment. "We can't eat them?""No."She looked down, kicking at the fallen leaves. She looked utterly defeated from head to toe.I reached out to brush the hair from her forehead, shifting into teacher mode to explain the tree's medicinal uses instead. Nora was still too deep in her heartbreak over dinner to care, but to my su

Evelyn's POVAfter lunch, I decided to take Nora to the nearby park for a walk.I stopped by the guest room and knocked. "Nora and I are heading to the park. Do you want to come?"Even though I'd been buried in work all morning, my wolf had been keeping tabs on the boy.Ethan had kept himself locked away the entire time, only slipping out once to use the bathroom before ducking straight back inside.Nora had even sneaked him some chocolate and milk, thinking I hadn't noticed.I figured Ethan would throw a tantrum and refuse to go. But if he stayed, Nora couldn't go either—there was no way I was leaving a ten-year-old pup home alone.I was just about to tell Nora we'd wait until later when the guest room door swung open.Ethan stood there, already changed. "I'll go.""Alright. Get your shoes on."When he saw I wasn't going to lecture him, Ethan let out a small sigh of relief. Then his eyes clouded over again, lost in thought.Head down, he quietly put on his shoes and followed Nora and

Evelyn's POVMonday morning. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, throwing bright patches across the living room.I was sitting at my small desk, staring at an email from the screenwriters' guild. The cursor blinked at me on the blank document. Before I could even type a single word, I heard the bedroom door click open.Nora padded out, rubbing her eyes. Her golden hair was a messy bedhead, and her big blue-gray eyes were still foggy with sleep. barefoot on the hardwood floor, she whispered, "Mommy, do I have to go to the Academy today?"I spun my chair around and knelt to eye level. "Not to that school anymore, baby."She blinked, staring at me silently."Mommy isn't going to let what Sophie did happen again," I said, tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "I'm going to find you a much better school.""Oh." Nora looked a little down. "I really liked the art teacher, though."Her art teacher really was a sweet, gentle person. I just hoped she wouldn't face any

Evelyn's POVI walked briskly out of the bathroom and onto the balcony before picking up Lila's call."Hey, dear, are you at the apartment?" Lila's energetic voice bounced through the speaker. "I bought Nora some new dresses! I'm coming over to see you guys this afternoon!""Okay," I replied."You sound off," Lila said, instantly picking up on my tone. "What's wrong?""Nothing," I said. "See you soon."Lila was coming over?I stood on the balcony, looking back at Adrian who had returned to the living room.He was staring at me with a dark, unreadable expression.I ended the call and walked back inside, looking right at him. "Take Ethan and leave. Lila is on her way, and it's not a good idea for you to be here."Lila absolutely loathed Adrian. If she found him in my apartment, her temper would flare, and things would get ugly real fast. The situation would spiral completely out of control. It was best if he took Ethan and left right now."Evelyn!" Adrian gritted his teeth, his dark eye

Evelyn's POVBy now, Nora had already scrambled into the kitchen.I heard the sound of her stepping onto her little stool to reach the counter, followed by the soft click of a juice bottle being opened. Before I could even get up, she was already walking back out, carefully balancing a glass of fruit tea in her tiny hands. She headed straight for Adrian. But two steps away, her toe caught the leg of the sofa, and she pitched forward.I lunged for her, but Adrian was faster. He caught her waist with one hand and steadied her back with the other, half-rising from the sofa in one fluid, practiced motion. But the tea splashed everywhere—all over his shirt and his suit jacket. The dark liquid soaked into the expensive fabric instantly.Nora froze. She looked down at the empty glass and then at the giant tea stain on Adrian's chest. Her eyes welled up, and her lip started to tremble as a tiny, broken sob escaped her throat.Adrian took the empty glass from her and set it on the coffee table

Evelyn's POVIn a high-end booth in Lunaris City, Marcus Reed raised his glass to me, his face flushing with the kind of apology that only comes out after a few drinks."Evelyn, about the lead actress... Evelyn's POVI forced myself to walk away. Ethan was no longer the pup I could hold.
