Chapter 2

Author: WoofyFin
I angrily yelled, "All the bodyguards she hired are gone! Ask her yourself. Does she even care if Cyril lives or if I'm still her brother? I'm not asking her to abandon her precious darling to come here, I'm just begging her not to block our only way out!"

When Cyril saw that the call was connected, he quickly leaned over and asked, "So? What did Ella say?"

My eyes burned red with frustration, but I didn't have the heart to tell him the truth.

On the other end of the line, the call had been transferred to Gabriella. When she heard this, she growled, "What do you expect me to say? Vance, you know perfectly well that Cyril has nothing to do at home except overthink everything, and you're still helping him pull these stunts!"

She added angrily, "You're a Rutherfurd, so maybe you should think about where your loyalty lies. You've been repeatedly helping an outsider interfere with my staff! I'm on a business trip right now and don't have time for your drama!"

In the background, I heard the sound of elimination gunshots from the game. Freddie's voice rang out, excitedly calling Gabriella's name and telling her to hang up.

After the bloody lesson of being tortured in my previous life, I felt increasingly cold toward Gabriella.

I forced myself to help Cyril up and tried to save us both. However, just as we were crawling forward, a flashlight beam hit us.

"Boss, they're here!"

A strong, tanned hand grabbed Cyril's ankle and yanked him backward. Then, a dirty boot stomped hard on his wrist, and the sound of breaking bone rang sharply through the night.

Cyril broke out in a cold sweat from the pain. Yet, he still desperately grabbed on to the man's pant leg with all his strength and shouted at me, "Vance, run! Find Ella! We agreed on an emergency signal... No matter where they take me, she'll come for me when she sees it!"

He held onto the man's legs tightly, but his body swayed from excessive blood loss, his face pale.

At that point, Cyril had no one left to count on but me. I bit down on my lip, turned, and sprinted a few hundred yards before diving straight into the river. I swam along the current to the shore, where Hannah Lowell's house was nearby.

The evening wind was chilly, and my soaked clothes clung to me, dripping water down my legs.

"Hannah! Hannah! Please open the door. I'm begging you to save us!" I frantically pressed the doorbell for help.

After a full ten minutes, the door finally opened.

Hannah wore a lace camisole nightgown and lazily leaned against the man beside her. She glanced at me and raised her hand to finish the red wine in her glass.

She purred, "Well, if it isn't Mr. Rutherfurd. What an unexpected visit."

I didn't have time to deal with her sarcasm. I rushed forward and grabbed her sleeve, pulling her outside.

"Please, bring your bodyguards and help me save Cyril! They're at Magnolia Avenue right now. It's not far. I'm begging you, please. If we wait any longer, it'll be too late!"

She disgustedly yanked her sleeve away and said, "Mr. Rutherfurd, you were quite arrogant when you didn't need anything from me, acting all cold and distant. You were too good for the likes of me back then, so why are you playing the victim and demanding help now?"

She continued, "You're not going to apologize or offer an explanation? Just orders?"

My heart sank. When Hannah pursued me before, she had sworn that she'd do anything for me.

I never agreed to be with her because I knew that Gabriella had done too many terrible things and had made too many enemies. Consequently, everyone close to us was being watched.

Additionally, Hannah had a background in criminal investigations. If she got involved with me, Gabriella would undoubtedly force her to do her dirty work.

She hummed a tune as she stared at me, her sharp eyes practically tearing through my soaked clothes. Out of options, I dropped to my knees and slapped myself twice.

"I'm sorry. I was wrong before. Please, be the bigger person. I'm begging you to send three or four people, or even just one or two, to come with me! Cyril's life is hanging by a thread. Even if you don't care about me, at least remember that your job is to save lives."

Freddie held Gabriella and said, "I'm sorry. I was too selfish. I just wanted to have fun. I never imagined it would go this far and ultimately cost Mr. Harding his life. I deserve to die, too! If I could, I'd follow him and never come back."Gabriella looked up through tear-filled eyes and pressed his hand against her face. "It's not your fault. It's all those abductors' fault. I blame myself for being ruthless in expanding the company in my early years, which led to this situation."I watched them coldly as they performed their tragic love scene right on top of Cyril's remains. Then, I noticed that the tracking system on the computer was still active. So, I quietly approached, took a photo with my phone, and sent it to the police station. Soon after, Kenny Dawson was brought before Gabrielle. He was responsible for screening the contestants. He took one look at Freddie and began to tremble. "The list was random. W-We don't know how Mr. Harding was included."Gabriella immediate

"That's right, I can find Cyril! We have an agreed signal!" Gabriella exclaimed. She pulled herself together and quickly typed in a code. Then, a blinking location appeared on the laptop screen, but it wasn't at the position of the severed head. She visibly relaxed and mocked me, "Now you're completely exposed! He wanted me to find him from the beginning, didn't he? Did he also want to play hide-and-seek like Freddie?" The deserted island Gabriella had rented to host the Squid Game was far from Brightshire and had a poor signal. Hence, it took a full minute for the location to become precise. It showed that it was right here in the arena, completely static.Gabriella's face went white. She spun around, her eyes scanning the surroundings. However, there wasn't a single living soul in sight except for Contestant 461. "Did Cyril give you his watch? Is the watch on you?" she questioned me frantically.Only then did I learn that the watch on Cyril's wrist wasn't just their token

The bruises from rope burns and the different injuries on Cyril's body matched everything I had described. At that moment, Hannah finally understood that I had been telling the truth all along. The head was swollen and distorted from multiple traumas, but the bone structure didn't lie.Everyone in Brightshire knew that Gabriella and Cyril grew up together. Back when they were young, Gabriella had been shot at, and it was Cyril who threw himself in front of her without hesitation. As a result, a bullet lodged in the middle of his skull. He remained unconscious for six months before waking up, leaving a small, barely noticeable scar on his head. The moment Hannah made the connection, her voice began to tremble uncontrollably. She dropped to her knees and pleaded, "Ms. Rutherfurd, could we at least untie Vance from the post? Something's not adding up here. I think this really might be Mr. Harding. If you're not sure, let's call a doctor and have the body examined."Gabriella scann

Gabriella casually turned her head for a glance, and her eyes instantly filled with despair. "Honey!" She immediately pushed Freddie aside and reached out with trembling fingers to touch the severed head.Cyril's eyes were tightly shut, his face twisted with a horrified expression. To make this fight more entertaining, she had given each contestant different weapons. The head's neck had been hacked hundreds of times with a rusty machete before it was finally severed. The pain Cyril had endured before death was unimaginable."Who brought the prey for the final round?" Gabriella shouted in anguish. The remaining contestants in the distance who were still fighting over scattered limbs were all shot dead by her. The bodyguards looked at each other. Then, they produced a list of game participants. One of them said, "Ms. Rutherfurd, this was a contestant named Benjamin Reeves. He was eliminated from the previous game." Gabriella hesitated, grabbed the list, and scanned the photo.

I yelled, "Ella, please trust me! Cyril said that you two had an agreed signal and that you could find him no matter where he went. That's the vow you made together! You've been married for a decade. Were all those years you spent together a lie?"Gabriella narrowed her eyes, studying my face. She thought for a moment before saying, "My game is about to reach its final peak, but I don't think 100 million dollars is enough anymore. Since you're so stubborn and won't admit that you're wrong, come to the arena and see how cruel the world is without me protecting you."She added, "It'll give you something to tell Cyril—that lying and playing the victim will never bring me back. And he needs to stop using our past to manipulate me."Gabriella ordered Hannah to tie me up tight. After injecting a sedative and blindfolding me, they transported me straight to a deserted island where the final game was being held.I woke up to the deafening roar of a crowd. Suddenly, someone ripped off the c

Gabrielle hissed, "Do you think you can scam me out of that 100-million-dollar prize? I only wanted to take Freddie out to relax for a bit, and Cyril kept trying to stop us. Fine, whatever. But to lie to my face? "Tell him that even if he is genuinely abducted, I won't let a scheming man like him drive Freddie away from me again!"I was so furious that my head throbbed, and I shouted back at Gabriella, "Cyril was abducted! When you brought your people last time, they were in the middle of beating him. Did you already forget?" Gabriella's eyes flickered for a moment. Then, she let out a cold, bitter laugh. "Oh, it was such a well-done performance, I nearly believed it myself. So what if Cyril got a little roughed up? Freddie lost his life!"The fact that I got a second chance proves that I made the wrong choice the first time. I should have stood by the one who was truly worth keeping."I chuckled bitterly. It was the kind of laugh that spilled over into tears without warning. Ev
