Chapter 2

Big Six
Three days after I signed the organ donation agreement, Rebecca landed a major job.

A new shopping mall in the city was holding its grand opening and needed dancers for the event. The performance paid 5,000 dollars, which was about half a month's income from her studio.

"What are you wearing?" I asked.

Rebecca was doing her makeup in front of the mirror, and her hand paused. "Just a regular dance costume."

"How regular?"

"It just… shows a little midriff." She applied a bright red lipstick that looked almost jarring on her. "That's what's popular right now."

My heart clenched painfully, but it wasn't a result of my heart condition this time.

"Don't go," I said. "I can apply for medical assistance—"

"And how many months of medication do you think that would cover?" she cut in as she zipped up the costume.

I'd seen it before. The entire back was bare except for a few thin straps. Rebecca used to hate outfits like these and refused to wear them herself.

Before leaving, she crouched in front of my wheelchair and held my face between her hands.

"William."

Her eyes were bright, and something about them made me uneasy. "I'll bring you a cake from that bakery on the west side of town when I come home. You love their cake, don't you?"

I parted my lips.

I wanted to tell her not to go. I wanted to tell her I didn't even like cake that much anymore.

Before I could, her phone rang. The event staff was calling to tell her to hurry.

Rebecca kissed my forehead, grabbed her bag, and ran out the door. The click of her heels faded down the hallway, each step seeming to hammer my chest.

She didn't come home that night, and her phone was turned off.

Later, someone posted in the dance studio's group chat that the performance had been a huge success. The investors were so pleased that they'd taken all the dancers out to dinner afterward.

There was a photo attached.

Rebecca was sitting near the head of the table with a sweet smile on her face. Beside her was a balding man, who had one arm draped across the back of her chair.

I stared at the picture until my phone screen dimmed.

She finally came home at 3:00 am. She reeked of alcohol, her makeup was smeared, and her hair was a mess.

I wheeled myself toward her. "What happened?"

"Nothing."

She pushed past me and rushed into the bathroom to puke.

I remained outside in my wheelchair, listening to the violent retching on the other side of the door while my fingers dug into the armrests.

Splinters from the worn wood pierced my palms, but I barely noticed the pain.

When Rebecca finally came out, her eyes were swollen and red, and there were red marks along her neck.

"Let's just sleep," she said.

Then, she collapsed onto the couch without even changing her clothes.

I went into the bedroom, brought back a blanket, and draped it over her, only for Rebecca to seize my hand with startling strength.

"William." Her voice came out hoarse. "I wish we had money. One million dollars… That would be enough to buy your life back.."

My body stiffened.

Moonlight filtered through the window and fell across her face. Her eyes remained closed, but tears slipped from the corners and disappeared into her hair.

At that moment, I knew something between us had broken.

A year later, Winona stayed on at the university and became the youngest lecturer in the architecture department. Mom and Dad managed to pay off the loan and get their house back, then opened a small convenience store and settled into a quiet life.Rebecca moved to Nadoria, where she began working at a rehabilitation center. She posted regularly on Instagram, usually sharing pictures of herself teaching patients to dance. The smiles in those photos looked real.Every once in a while, though, she posted something from our past—our wedding pictures, photos from trips we'd taken together, or old videos of the two of us dancing. The caption was always the same."Some people may only be part of your life for a while, but they stay with you forever."As for me, I wandered the world.I watched the northern lights, saw whales breach the surface of the ocean, and floated beneath desert skies crowded with stars. It turned out death wasn't the end after all, but the beginning of a differ

The transplant was a success, and the eight-year-old girl survived. Her story made the news, although my name was never made public. The report simply said that the lungs had come from "a donor who wished to remain unnamed".Winona clipped out the article and brought it to my grave, attaching it beside my photograph."Look, Will. A piece of you is still alive."She crouched in front of my headstone the same way she used to squat beside me when we were kids and began telling me about the girl."Her name's Renee, and she's adorable. She says she wants to become a doctor and save more lives. You gave her a second chance at life, Will."A light breeze passed through the cemetery. The photograph on my headstone had been taken before I got sick, on a bright sunny day when I was wearing a white shirt and smiling like a man who believed he had his whole life ahead of him.Winona gently traced the picture with her fingers."If there really is another life after this, please be healthy

The funeral was held a week later.Mom and Dad came from our hometown. They seemed to have aged overnight.Mom held my urn tightly against her chest and refused to let anyone take it from her."Will was always afraid of the dark," she murmured. "It's going to be so dark in there. What is he supposed to do?"Dad stood beside her with his bad back hunched. He didn't say a word, simply lighting one cigarette after another.Rebecca came, too. She wore a black dress and dark sunglasses that hid most of her face, standing at the very back of the crowd and watching my grave from a distance. After the service ended, she finally approached my parents and bowed her head."I'm sorry."Mom looked up at her with an empty expression. "What good is an apology now?"Rebecca pressed her lips together as she pulled an envelope from her purse. "There's 200,000 dollars in here. It's everything I've saved over the years, plus the money from selling the dance studio. Please use it to pay off the lo

By the time I floated back home, dawn was almost breaking. The apartment looked exactly as we'd left it. The divorce papers were still spread across the table, the pen beside them uncapped, while my phone sat charging nearby with its screen dark.Winona returned around noon. Her eyes were swollen nearly shut, and she stumbled as she walked. The moment she saw the divorce papers on the table, she picked them up with shaking hands."Divorce papers…" she murmured. "No wonder…"She rushed into the bedroom and tore through the drawers and cabinets until she finally found my final letter beneath the pillow. It was brief."Mom, Dad, Winona, Rebecca, I'm sorry. By the time you read this, I'll be gone. Please don't be too sad. For me, this is finally a release to the suffering. Donate my organs to whoever needs them. Maybe that'll be the one good deed I'm able to do in this life."The PIN for my bank account is Winona's birthday. Use the insurance money to pay off the debt. If there r

When I opened my eyes again, I was floating in midair.Below me, my body lay face down in the flower bed, crushing the roses beneath it. Blood spread beneath me, appearing black against the darkness of the night.Someone noticed before long. A scream rang out, followed by calls to the police, and soon an ambulance arrived. It didn't stay long, and the officers began taping off the area.I drifted back toward my hospital room. The caregiver was on the phone, her voice trembling. "The patient jumped… Yes, from the seventh floor. I should've been watching him…"Someone started shouting on the other end, and she broke down in tears. "I swear, I didn't know he was going to do something like this…"I floated out of the hospital and toward the train station.Winona had just arrived. She came through the exit dragging her suitcase behind her, her eyes already red and swollen, then hurried to flag down a cab."City Hospital, please. Hurry."The driver seemed to understand that she wa

  • Signed My Heart Away on Our Anniversary   Chapter 9

I arrived at the hospital on Friday exactly as scheduled. The organ donation coordinator was a young man with black-framed glasses. He asked one final time, "Mr. Zander, are you sure? According to our policy, you still have 24 hours to change your mind.""I don't need more time. I'll sign," I said.Once the paperwork was complete, they took me through the final round of testing, including bloodwork, an EKG, and a CT scan. The last step was a psychological evaluation. The doctor asked, "Is there anything you still wish you'd had the chance to do?"I thought about it before answering, "No.""Is there anything you'd like to say to your family?""I hope they'll be happy."The doctor studied me for a long moment, then sighed. "Mr. Zander, you're a good man."A good man?No. I was just a coward. A coward who was afraid to keep going. After the evaluation, I was admitted to a private room overlooking the hospital lawn, where several patients were sitting outside enjoying the sunl
