The morning began in deceptive peace.

Golden light filtered through the linen curtains, spilling across the hardwood floor and warming the edges of the rug. Sienna stood barefoot in the bedroom, hair loose over her shoulders, the faint hum of the kettle still in her ears. She balanced a steaming mug of coffee in her hand, watching Adrian as he buttoned his cuffs in front of the tall mirror.

He always looked untouchable in the mornings. Tall. Composed. His presence filled the room as though the air bent itself around him. But his tie hung loose, draped carelessly over his collar like a ribbon waiting for order.

“You’re hopeless,” she said softly, setting the mug down on the dresser.

Adrian glanced at her reflection, his lips twitching. “I leave it for you.”

She crossed the room, bare feet silent on the polished floor. “That’s not an excuse. You’d walk out of here looking like a man who dressed in the dark.”

“I’d walk out of here thinking of you fixing me,” he corrected, t

Layla jerked awake from her half sleep trying to figure out whom the voice belonged to. Her chest heaved as she turned toward the voice, and then reality hit her. It wasn’t a nurse it was Voss. He looked… exhausted. Worn out in a way she had never seen before. There were dark shadows under his eyes, his hair slightly mussed, his suit rumpled from what she assumed was a long day and an even longer night. “Voss!” she cried, rushing to him, her heels clicking sharply against the sterile tiles. “Voss, what’s going on? Where is Sienna? Where are the twins? How come no one called me?” Voss’s eyes widened at the sight of her, relief washing over his features. He ran a hand through his hair, shoulders sagging slightly. “Layla… thank God you’re here,” he said, voice tight, low with stress. “My phone has been dead, and at this point, I don’t even know where exactly it is. I’ve been trying to get a hold of you.” Layla’s gaze flicked to the nurse nearby. She could see the guilty tilt of her h

The jet lifted continued into the afternoon sky, and Layla leaned back in her seat, feeling the gentle vibration of the engines through the leather beneath her. She pressed her fingertips lightly against the armrest, grounding herself, letting the quiet hum of the cabin soothe the knot of nerves in her chest. Today was different, she reminded herself. Today was not about conniving mothers of boyfriends or trying to prove that she could be a good girlfriend and eventually wife to Voss, it was about making a meaningful and lasting business relationship with Elara. This was an opportunity of a lifetime and she was not going to mess it up. Elara sat across from her, cup of tea balanced delicately in her hands, eyes calm and focused on the view outside the window. For a moment, Layla thought about how someone like Elara could command so much influence, so much attention, and still seem… human. Real. Not performative. She caught herself staring, realizing she’d done it silently, like i

Layla woke before her alarm. It wasn’t sudden. There was no jolt, no panic. Just a quiet awareness sliding into her chest, pulling her gently out of sleep. Her eyes opened slowly, blinking against the dim blue light seeping through the curtains. Morning had arrived without announcing itself. For a long moment, she didn’t move. The apartment was still in that fragile way only early morning could manage. No traffic yet. No voices drifting up from the street. No notifications lighting up her phone. Just silence, soft and almost reverent, like the world was holding its breath.Beside her, Voss slept. She turned her head slightly, careful not to disturb the mattress. He lay on his back, one arm bent above his head, the other resting loosely at his side. His breathing was deep and steady, the slow rise and fall of his chest grounding her more than she realized she needed. She listened to him. Each breath felt like an anchor. Proof that this moment was real. That she wasn’t imagining the lif

Layla watched Voss for a long moment before she moved. He sat on the couch the way he often did when something weighed on him, leaning forward slightly, forearms resting on his thighs, hands loosely clasped. His phone lay forgotten beside him. His eyes were distant, not cold, just thoughtful. The light from the window touched his face softly, outlining the sharpness of his jaw, the tired strength in his shoulders.Something about him like this always pulled at her chest. She walked toward him slowly, barefoot, careful not to break the quiet that had settled over the room. The apartment felt warm, lived-in, safe. It felt like theirs, even if only for today.“Voss,” she said gently. He looked up immediately, concern replacing whatever thoughts had held him. “Hey.”She stopped right in front of him. “You look bothered.”He gave a small shrug, forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “I’m fine my love.”She studied him. “That wasn’t an answer.”He exhaled softly through his nose.

Layla stepped out of the bathroom, the warm scent of her shower clinging to her skin. She paused for a moment, letting the towel slide down, wrapping herself in a soft, worn cotton robe. Her hair was damp, strands sticking slightly to her cheeks, the soft smell of shampoo mingling with the faint perfume she always wore. She moved deliberately, almost ceremoniously, choosing an outfit that felt safe but pleasant, a cream-colored linen blouse that fell loosely around her torso, tucked into soft gray trousers that brushed against her ankles. She tugged gently at the waistband, adjusted the sleeves of the blouse, then tied her hair back into a loose ponytail, letting a few strands fall around her face. It wasn’t about looking perfect. It was about feeling herself again, comfortable, untethered from fear, even if only slightly. From the couch, Voss’s gaze followed her like a careful observer, but there was no judgment, no impatience, only a quiet admiration. The way she moved, the sm

Voss opened the car door and stood there for a moment, unable to move. Layla was still in the same position he had left her in. Her body was curled inward, knees pulled tightly to her chest, arms wrapped around them as if she was trying to protect herself from something unseen. Her head was bowed, hair falling forward, hiding her face completely. The car was quiet except for the faint, broken sounds coming from her chest. She wasn’t sobbing loudly anymore. She was past that. Her cries were quiet now, cracked, uneven. The kind of crying that came after the storm, when someone had already screamed themselves empty and was left with nothing but pain and exhaustion. Voss felt something twist sharply in his chest. “Layla,” he said softly. She flinched. Her head snapped up, eyes wide and red, lashes clumped together with tears. She looked at him like she wasn’t sure he was real. Like she was afraid he might disappear if she blinked. Then her face crumpled. “Voss—” she gasped, he
