The Scent of Betrayal

Penulis: Rosamund
The notification of my successful hospital appointment glowed on my phone as I slowly awoke. My mate, Karl, leaned in to scent my neck as he did every morning, but I shifted away, pretending to check my phone.

Karl froze, his Alpha pheromones suddenly spiking with confusion. When his eyes fell on the phone next to my pillow, his brow furrowed into a frown.

"You need to spend less time on that device," he said, his voice carrying that commanding Alpha tone he used when concerned. "It's not good for our pup."

I offered a bitter smile and nodded, quickly closing the prenatal appointment page on my screen. Despite being an Omega, I'd learned to mask my scent well enough that Karl didn't notice my distress. He merely glanced at my phone before the corners of his lips curled almost imperceptibly.

He dressed quickly, his powerful frame moving with practiced efficiency as he buttoned his shirt. "There's an important pack alliance meeting today. Don't wait for me tonight."

He strode out before I could respond, his Alpha authority filling the room even after he'd gone.

In the past, whenever he had pack business, I would rise early to prepare his favorite breakfast and fuss over him, reminding him to be careful around other unmated Omegas. I would spend the entire day restless, my Omega instincts making me yearn for his return.

But now I just lay in bed, exhausted. His words from last night echoed in my mind like a cruel mantra.

The happiness I'd believed in was nothing but a cruel joke.

The Alpha who had sworn to be my mate for life had been lying to me all along.

I'd discovered Natalie's Instagram account yesterday—an Omega from a neighboring pack—and found countless photos of her with Karl. For three years, all those "diplomatic missions" he claimed to be on were actually trips to see her in the Northern territories.

My attention was drawn to a user with the same avatar as Natalie in the comments section. When I clicked on their profile, my breath caught in my throat.

The profile had only a few videos, but they showed me a side of Karl I'd never seen—genuinely happy, unguarded. In one video, he nuzzled the Omega girl's neck tenderly, promising her "years together until our fur turns gray."

My phone vibrated with a message from Karl, telling me to take care and eat well.

In the past, such concern would have made my Omega preen with joy. Now, I wondered if he'd just finished sending similar messages to Natalie.

Thinking of the pup growing inside me—a pup I'd fought so hard to conceive despite my "faulty Omega biology" as the pack doctor had called it—I forced myself to send a loving reply.

Almost immediately, Natalie updated her status. The Alpha who was supposedly at an alliance meeting was actually decorating a Christmas tree with childish ornaments. When he tilted his head, I could clearly see the mating bite he'd left on her neck—fresh and raw.

"Karl promised me the most beautiful tree in the territory," her caption read.

I could imagine his devotion and tenderness through the screen.

Yet just yesterday, when I'd mentioned wanting to decorate our den for the winter solstice, he'd dismissed me coldly: "How childish can you be? If you have too much energy, join the pack's prenatal classes instead of wasting time on human traditions."

Karl had always been stern, a powerful Alpha focused on pack business. I'd grown accustomed to his lack of affection.

But the photos before me cut like silver blades into my heart. He wasn't incapable of romance—he'd simply never wanted to share it with me.

I still couldn't understand why he maintained our mating if he'd found his true mate in Natalie. Was I just a political alliance? A broodmare for his lineage?

As these thoughts swirled, sharp pain lanced through my abdomen. I gently stroked my belly, silently apologizing to the tiny life within.

Now that I knew the truth, how could I allow this charade to continue?

Returning to work, I discovered the controversy had subsided. My landlord called to report someone had been waiting outside my apartment for three days.I hurried back to find Karl sitting at my doorstep, cigarette smoke mingling with his distressed Alpha scent.Discarded cigarettes formed a small mound at his feet. When he saw me, he stood unsteadily."Isabelle..."I frowned in distaste. "What now?""Natalie has been handled. She won't trouble you again. I didn't expect her to become so... unhinged.""But isn't this entire situation your creation? Without your betrayal, none of this would have happened."I interrupted him and locked my door, leaving him outside. After that day, Karl began appearing regularly near my home.Every evening after work, I would find something at my doorstep—sometimes wildflowers from the mountainside, sometimes hand-carved wooden figurines.I discarded each offering without hesitation.Winter solstice approached again. With expert legal assistance, the separation proceeded smoothly.Karl had disappeared from public view after Natalie announced her pregnancy. When I returned to his territory to finalize our separation, he finally emerged from seclusion.Outside the Council Hall, Karl looked destroyed. In just one month, he appeared to have aged a decade."Isabelle... give me more time. I can fix this," he pleaded.I walked past him without acknowledgment, my voice flat."Don't make me hate you more than I already do."His face paled further, finally conceding with a bitter smile. When he emerged later, Natalie waited at the entrance, her abdomen showing early signs of pregnancy."Don't forget to attend the naming ceremony for Karl's and my pup," she called out smugly. "After all, if you hadn't given him up, our pup would have no father."She smiled triumphantly, as if she'd achieved some great victory.Karl growled at her in frustration. "Natalie! Didn't I tell you to remain at the den?""Why should I

I turned to see Nate approaching, his Beta scent strengthened by protective pheromones. He positioned himself between Karl and me."I've alerted the territory guardians," Nate stated firmly. "Isabelle has my protection now. Besides, she's a strong, capable wolf who doesn't need anyone's validation to thrive."Karl's face contorted with rage, his Alpha pheromones flooding the area as he glared at Nate."I am Isabelle's true mate," he snarled. "Who are you to claim her? By what right do you call her yours?"Nate remained unmoved, his posture relaxed but ready."Mate? The separation documents she filed are more than sufficient grounds to nullify your claim. Your actions alone would justify ten severances under pack law."At these words, veins bulge at Karl's temples, his control slipping as he lunged toward Nate. Before he could make contact, territory guardians appeared, restraining him and escorting him to the border for questioning.Nate gave me a reassuring smile before following to e

"Isabelle, I—"Karl's face was drained of color. His lips moved, attempting an explanation, but no defense came forth. The snow fell heavier, accumulating on his shoulders and in his unkempt hair."Do you remember what you promised during our first winter solstice together?" I asked.Karl stared at me with hollow eyes, as if searching through distant memories.I laughed softly, knowing he had forgotten long ago.During our first winter solstice, Karl had spent his entire savings to reserve a private area in neutral territory for us.I had never believed in eternal love, but when he appeared with wildflowers gathered from the mountainside, I began to imagine growing old together.Karl had always been straightforward and serious—what humans might call a "no-nonsense" Alpha. I was drawn to his steadiness, though I never expected to become his mate. That night, he knelt before me with surprising humility and vowed: "Isabelle, I swear by the Moon Goddess, my heart will belong only to you un

I turned to see Karl, nearly unrecognizable in his exhausted state.Snow covered the ground, yet sweat beaded on his forehead. He panted heavily, staring at me with desperate intensity, as if afraid I might vanish. My instinct was to slam the door, but he caught my wrist. He pulled me against his chest, holding me so tightly I could feel his racing heartbeat. His Alpha scent was tinged with distress pheromones."Isabelle... Isabelle..." His voice trembled, breaking on my name."I was wrong, so wrong. Please don't punish me like this.""Without you, I can't function. I can't breathe."Hot tears slid down my neck, but I turned away in revulsion.I couldn't comprehend his performance. He had betrayed our mating bond, yet now acted wounded and repentant. Was it true that Alphas only value what they've lost?"Let go," I commanded coldly.Karl remained immobile, his arms locked around me.Finally, I couldn't contain myself: "LET GO!"My shout carried enough force that Karl's body tensed befo

Fifteen hours later, I crossed into Northern territory.I had secured a position as a language instructor at the academy where I had once studied as an exchange student. The administration had arranged everything—I needed only to arrive with my belongings.Settling into my faculty apartment and activating a new communication crystal, I finally allowed myself to relax completely.By my calculations, Karl and Natalie should have received the surprise I'd carefully prepared by now.I activated my old communication crystal one last time and saw news about Karl's pack spreading throughout the wolf territories. The video showed Karl standing in his ceremonial attire, watching expectantly as a vehicle approached the sacred clearing. When the door opened, Natalie emerged wearing the white ceremonial dress meant for me.Before Karl could speak, the crystal projector behind him activated automatically, displaying the collection of images I had compiled—a thousand photographs documenting Karl and
