Chapter 53

Monaco

Myra

Nicholas packed for a three-day trip as if he were relocating to another continent.

I stood in the doorway of our bedroom and watched him place another folded shirt into the open suitcase.

“You know you’re coming back, right?”

He looked at me.

“Yes.”

“Then why do you have six shirts?”

“Options.”

“For three days?”

“Yes.”

“Four pairs of pants?”

“Options.”

“Three watches?”

He stopped.

I smiled.

“Go ahead.”

“What?”

“Explain why a human being needs three watches for one weeken

EpilogueAlwaysMyraSeven months later.“Nicholas.”“No.”“You don’t even know what I’m asking.”“Yes, I do.”I stared at my husband across the kitchen. He stared back.Ash stood between us.Amethyst stood behind him.And on the kitchen counter sat a plate of pancakes.Actual pancakes.Round.Golden.Not burned. Not raw.I was impressed. But that wasn’t the current problem.I put both hands beneath my very pregnant stomach.“I want to go to the barn.”“No.”I closed my eyes.“You cannot ban me from the barn.”“I didn’t ban you.”“You just said no.”“To walking there alone.”“It’s fifty yards.”“Sixty-three.”I stared.“You measured?”“No.”“You absolutely measured.”Nicholas turned toward the stove.“Sit down.”“Nicholas Aspen.”“Myra Aspen.”“Don’t use my married name when you’re being bossy.”His mouth twitched.“You use Aspen now.”“Sometimes.”“You used it yesterday.”“I also use Vale.”“I know.”“And Benardi when I feel like confusing people.”“I know.”I smiled. He had kept his

Chapter 55By ChoiceMyraTwo months later.Nicholas was acting strange. Not dangerous strange. Not someone is following us strange. Not there’s another secret family member hiding in Switzerland strange.Just—Nicholas strange.Which might have been worse. He had been looking at his phone all morning.Every time I came near him, he put it down.At breakfast, Chase called.Nicholas answered, listened for approximately eight seconds, then said,“Not now.”And hung up.I stared at him across the kitchen island.“What?”“Nothing.”“Why did you hang up on Chase?”“He was annoying me.”“That’s normal.”“Yes.”“What did he want?”“Nothing.”I narrowed my eyes.Nicholas took a drink of coffee.Too casual.Much too casual.Ash was lying near his chair.Because somewhere during the past eight months, the rule about goats never entering the house had apparently died.Nicholas claimed Ash was only allowed in the mudroom.Ash apparently had not been informed. He was currently asleep beneath the k

Chapter 54The Life AfterMyraSix months later. The first thing I heard was Nicholas yelling at a goat.“Ash!”I opened one eye.Silence.Then—“DROP IT.”I smiled into my pillow. This was going to be good.I climbed out of bed, pulled on Nicholas’s shirt from the chair, and walked barefoot toward the bedroom window.Nothing.Whatever was happening was apparently closer to the barn. Then Nicholas’s voice carried across the property again.“MYRA!”I laughed. That was never good.I headed downstairs. The kitchen was empty. The back door stood open.I stepped outside. And stopped.Nicholas stood in the middle of the yard wearing black dress pants, a white shirt, and no shoes. His tie hung loose around his neck.Ash stood ten feet away. With one of Nicholas’s expensive shoes in his mouth.Amethyst was beside him.Chewing something that looked suspiciously like a sock.I covered my mouth.Nicholas saw me.“Don’t.”I lost it.I bent forward laughing.“Myra.”“I’m sorry.”“No, you’re not.”

Chapter 52A House of Our OwnMyraNicholas lasted exactly forty-three minutes without making a plan.I knew because I timed him.We woke late.Had coffee in bed.Showered.Got dressed.Went downstairs. And for forty-three beautiful minutes, Nicholas Aspen managed to exist without a schedule. Then he picked up his phone.I looked over the top of my coffee cup.“No.”He froze.“What?”“You’re planning something.”“No.”“You have that face.”“What face?”“The business face.”“I only have one face.”“That is absolutely not true.”He looked offended.I pointed at him.“You have the scary Dragon face.”“I do not.”“The irritated Nicholas face.”“That’s usually because of you.”“The jealous face.”“Also because of you.”“The I’m-about-to-tell-somebody-what-to-do face.”He opened his mouth.I pointed harder.“And that one.”He closed it.I smiled.“Then there’s the bedroom face.”His expression changed instantly.I laughed.“That one.”He set his phone down.“You’re very pleased with yoursel

Chapter 51Ordinary ThingsMyraI woke up smiling. That alone should have warned me something was wrong. For several seconds, I didn’t open my eyes.I simply lay there beneath the sheets, warm and comfortable, listening to the steady breathing of the man beside me.Nicholas.No hospital machines. No guards speaking urgently outside the door.No phone vibrating on the nightstand. No helicopters. No guns.No secret family members waiting downstairs.Just Nicholas. And me.And the kind of morning I’d once thought people only had in movies. His arm was stretched across my waist. One leg tangled with mine.My cheek rested against his chest.Sometime during the night, the blanket had ended up mostly on the floor.I wasn’t going to complain.I shifted slightly. His arm tightened immediately.“Don’t.”His voice was deep with sleep.I smiled against his chest.“I didn’t do anything.”“You moved.”“People do that.”“Unnecessary.”I laughed softly.“You’re awake.”“No.”“You’re talking.”“Still
