LOGINI woke up the next morning quite late, my body still feeling the lingering exhaustion of the night before. I dragged myself out of bed and took my bath, letting the warm water wash over me as I tried to clear my head.
When I finally got out of the bedroom and stepped into the upper hallway, I saw Matthew sitting on the plush sofa. The heavy, dark atmosphere he always brought into the house immediately settled over me.
“Good morning,” I greeted him, keeping my voice soft and obedient.
“My son is back from the States,” Matthew said, not bothering to look up at me at first. He adjusted his watch, his tone commanding. “And I will introduce the both of you. Get dressed and meet me downstairs.”
“Okay,” I nodded, keeping my emotions completely masked.
I went back to my closet and changed into a comfy short gown. It was simple, but it hugged my curves just enough to remind me of the woman I used to be before I became a prisoner in this house.
Taking a deep breath, I went down the grand marble staircase to the living room. As I walked in, I saw the father and son already seated, clinking their glasses of wine together. In the daylight, Matthew’s son looked even more imposing, his broad shoulders stretching the fabric of his dark designer shirt.
“Come and sit here,” Matthew motioned, tapping the empty cushion right beside him.
I walked over and sat down, my posture rigid.
Matthew looked between the two of us, a smirk playing on his lips.
“You guys must have met before.”
I held my breath, my mind racing back to the midnight encounter in the kitchen, the way I had drooled over his shirtless body in the dark.
Before I could answer, his son spoke up.
“No, we haven’t,” he replied, his voice a cool, smooth lie as his dark eyes locked onto mine. “Who is she?”
“She is my wife, the one I told you about,” Matthew said proudly, wrapping his arm around my waist, making me internally flinch. “Her name is Elena.”
“Oh, I see,” he said, tilting his glass toward me.
“And Elena,” Matthew continued, “this is my son, Archie.”
Archie. The name sounded cool on his tongue. We both shared glances across the table, the silent tension between us so thick I was terrified Matthew would feel it.
“Nice meeting you, Elena,” Archie said, his eyes scanning my face, dropping for a split second to my lips before locking back onto my eyes.
“Same here,” I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs.
He kept looking at me, completely unbothered by his father’s presence. There was a dangerous, mocking challenge in his eyes that made my skin flush with a sudden heat.
Suddenly, Matthew’s phone rang, He glanced at the screen and groaned, it was a business call.
“I will leave you two to catch up,” Matthew said, sliding his arm off my waist.
He stood up, went outside into the courtyard, and picked up his call.
The moment the glass doors slid shut behind Matthew, it felt still inside. The living room became a vacuum of suffocating tension.
Archie leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, staring at me with a slow, wicked smirk.
“So, you are my stepmom,” he said teasingly, his deep voice dripping with dark amusement.
I kept quiet and did not say a word. I gripped the fabric of my short gown, terrified that if I spoke, I would give away how fast my heart was beating. I just stared back at him, trying to look cold and unaffected.
“Well, nice having a young stepmom,” Archie murmured, his gaze dropping down to my bare legs before he slowly stood up. “See you around.”
He turned on his heel and started walking out of the living room.
I didn’t move an inch. I kept staring at him while he walked away, my eyes locked onto the broad line of his back and the confident, powerful stride of his legs.
As I was about to leave to the sitting room myself, trying to escape before Matthew finished his phone call, my nerves got the better of me.
The door to the patio opened slightly as Matthew stepped further away on the grass.
In my rush, I tiptoed quickly across the marble floor and almost fell. My foot slipped on the polished surface, and my body tilted forward.
Suddenly, a pair of strong arms grabbed me from behind and forcefully pulled me up.
My breath caught completely in my throat.
I didn’t know when he had gotten so close to me, or how he had moved so fast, but Archie was standing right there.
His hands were wrapped securely around my waist, his warm chest pressing lightly against my back.
“Watch where you are going, mom,” Archie said near my ear, a slow, mocking smile playing on his lips as he used the title to tease me.
I felt completely embarrassed and flushed all over.
“Thanks,” I muttered, twitching my eyes nervously as I tried to pull away from his overwhelming grip.
“Don’t mention it,” he replied smoothly, his hands sliding off my waist.
He gave me one last intense look and went back to sit on the sofa, picking up his wine glass as if nothing had happened.
Shaking and breathless, I shamelessly turned around and returned back to my room, my heart hammering violently against my ribs the entire way up the stairs.
We walked for about thirty minutes through the dark before we finally made it out of the private estate. When we reached the main public road, we waved our hands and stopped a cab. Clara leaned forward and told the driver exactly where to take us.After a long drive, the cab pulled up in front of another mansion surrounded by a large private estate. Right away, I noticed something different. There were no guards walking around with guns. The place felt peaceful, quiet, and safe.We stood by the front gate and rang the buzzer, but nobody answered.“Is this how this place always is?” I asked Clara, looking around.“Yes, ma,” she replied. “We just have to wait for someone to come down and attend to us.”After a short wait, a man wearing a black suit walked toward the gate.“Hello,” we greeted him.“Who are you looking for?” he asked, looking closely at us.“I am looking for Archie,” I said.“Oh, you mean my boss. Okay.” The man nodded. “What is your name?”I didn’t want to give him my re
Can you take me there?” I asked, my fingers tightening around the maid’s sleeve. “Please, Clara. I need to go there. Right now.”Clara’s eyes widened with fear.“Ma’am… I can’t. The guards… you know the rules. Master Matthew said nobody leaves. You are never allowed outside the walls. If the guards see you trying to leave, or if Master Matthew finds out I helped you… it is going to be hell for both of us. He will kill me.”“He won’t find out,” I pleaded, my voice cracking. “Matthew is still away leading the operation. He won’t be back for days. But I have to see Archie. Is there any way? Any way at all that I can leave this mansion without the guards knowing?”Clara looked down at the sheet in her hands, her lower lip trembling. She knew the brutality of the Mallory men.But she also looked at me—a woman who had been a prisoner in this house for five years, now completely broken.“They have surrounded everywhere, ma’am,” Clara whispered. “There are guards at the main gate, guards alon
The silence inside the mansion did not feel soft. It felt heavy, like something pressing over my mouth. Two days had passed since the door slammed shut between Archie and me. In those forty-eight hours, the silence inside the house only grew louder.Every tick of the clock downstairs sounded like a hammer striking metal. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.I walked through the long corridors, my satin slippers making almost no sound against the rugs. The house was too large. It was a fortress of marble, gold, and cold stone, and without Archie’s sharp, dangerous presence, it felt completely empty.I hadn’t seen him since I pushed him out of my bedroom. I had told him to stay away. I had told him I hated him. I had called him a monster, just like his father.I had gotten exactly what I asked for.But instead of relief, a cold ache had begun to grow beneath my ribs.On the third morning, the silence became too much to bear. I walked down the staircase, my hand sliding along the cold banister. I fel
The door of my bedroom did little to block out the silence of the mansion. Inside, the room smelled faintly of lavender soap and the books I read to pass the endless hours. Morning sunlight came through the curtains, casting pale rectangles across the floor.I stood by the dressing table, my fingers tracing the silver handle of a hairbrush. My skin felt cool in the morning air. Every muscle in my body was tense. Ever since the slap in the living room, the house had felt less like a sanctuary and more like a waiting room for an explosion.A soft knock came at my door.I froze. My heart gave a hard thud against my ribs. I didn’t answer. I stood still, barely breathing, hoping whoever it was would think I was asleep or gone. The doorknob turned with a slow click. The door opened, and Archie stepped into the room. He had taken off the black shirt he wore the day before and was now wearing a loose grey T-shirt that showed the bandages around his left shoulder. His face was pale, and dark c
The front doors opened, and I was pushed into a massive, warm entrance hall. The floor was polished marble, reflecting the bright light of a golden chandelier. Matthew stood at the top of a small flight of stairs, wearing a silk robe, a glass of amber whiskey in his hand. He looked down at me as I stood there, dripping wet, shivering violently, a puddle of dirty rainwater pooling around my sneakers.“You are really stubborn and feisty, huh?” Matthew said, taking a slow sip of his drink.I dropped to my knees right there on the cold marble.“Sir, please help me,” I sobbed, my voice echoing in the vast space. “My brother has barely forty-eight hours to live. I will do anything you want me to do. Anything. Just pay for the surgery. Please, sir.”Matthew didn’t answer right away. He walked down the stairs slowly, the soft leather of his slippers making no sound at all. He stopped right in front of me, the rich, bitter scent of whiskey and expensive cologne washing over my damp face.He re
Archie’s hand remained on my waist, its branding heat burning straight through the thin fabric of my blouse. The living room around us had gone utterly still. Even the air seemed to hold its breath. My heart hammered violently against my ribs.I forced myself to look up, and my eyes locked with his. The playful, mocking smirk he usually wore was gone. In its place was something darker, heavier. An intensity that frightened me far more than his teasing ever had.“Why?” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “Why did you take a bullet for me, Archie?”He didn’t blink. His fingers tightened slightly against my hip, pulling me closer. A low, rough breath escaped him, brushing warmly against my cheek.“I don’t know,” he murmured. His gaze dropped to my lips before slowly returning to my eyes. There was something raw in his expression. Something strangely vulnerable.“Maybe this attraction… the sex I want to have with you… maybe it has turned to love.”The word hung between us.Love.It felt
