Bennett's pov

The day has finally come, it was my eighteenth birthday and according to tradition, it is the day that I would find my mate.

It was a week after my altercation with Lucas, a week out of trouble, and a week of merriment. We were on neutral ground, neither my pack's territory nor anyone else's land.

It was just an empty place that we revamped into this awesome party location.

At first I had wanted it to be on pack grounds but my father had an important meeting with important visitors from other packs, so Ryder and I decided to do it out here.

"Sick party, Alpha."

A member of our school committee, our class president Fredrick, commented. I had invited a good number of the school's population, but the majority of the people I invited are allies or possible allies to our packs.

Anybody that had affiliations with Lucas storm or anything that has to do with his pack couldn't come near my party, Ryder had carefully made sure that they didn't get any invitations whatsoever.

I looked forward to the crowd with my glass of wine in my hand. I was ecstatic to say the least because today would be the day I would find her.

"Who do you think your mate would be?" Ryder asked, lollipop in his mouth.

"Well, I don't have any speculations, but if it isn't someone from our pack, I am guessing that it will likely be someone from a neighbouring pack."

"Fair enough."

When most people reach this age, they actually must've had guesses and speculations on who their expected mates will be. But I didn't have that luxury, because I hadn't really dated anyone before.

I tried in junior year, her name was Amara.

Amara Wester was the daughter of my father's friend, but she.....was into girls.

She didn't tell me she was a lesbian, and I fell for her....hard. There were times I dared to dream of a future with us together, Alpha and Luna.

But then I found out she was having an affair with a janitor's daughter, a fellow student in our school, as of then. She was still parading as my romantic interest until I caught her, when I found out she confessed before moving towns.

I lost interest in dating totally, and I had stayed celibate, completely without sex.

I knew how much I craved the connection of a mate. I had waited this long, and I prayed that the goddess would bless me with my perfect better half.

Preferably someone who hated the Storms, too, I smirked.

~

The loud fest was over, it was time for the real deal. I could feel it in the air, the way something was pulsing underneath my skin. It was electrifying, it was sweet, it was fate.

Ryder could see the way my eyes glowed with a faint rub of hue. He smiled cheekily and gestured for the music to be cut off.

I could hear a little bit of commotion at the entrance, well it was a party so they could go fuck themselves or whatever.

My wolf was leading me to my mate, and that was the only thing I was focused on.

I felt the connection going deeper, my gaze scanning the females in the crowd, my eyes almost landed on one, I think.

Before I got interrupted,

By Lucas fuckin' storm.

He stood at the entrance, loud and rowdy, with the group of friends that accompanied him. I saw red,

"The fuck are you doing at my party?" I roared.

Lucas chuckled, obviously a little bit intoxicated.

"I am very hurt Bennett," he faked a dramatic pout, "I can't believe you didn't invite me to your party, don't you want me to personally meet your mate?."

That was it,

I had enough.

I stormed towards him, ready to shift and beat his face in. My Beta and friends gathered behind in solidarity.

But just as I was about to throw the first punch. A scent hit me, filling my nostrils and quickening the pace of my heart.

I looked up with wide eyes, in frozen shock as my wolf roared.

"Mate."

Lucas got it too, our eyes pulsed with the strongest of glows, and we could literally hear our heartbeat intertwine similarly.

Fuck,

I couldn't move, the murmurs erupted around us, our Beta's were rooted in shock beside us. I could see Lucas's knees go weak.

I didn't even know what to say, should I scream, growl, turn to the crowd and tell them that this was some kind of sick joke orchestrated by Lucas?.

But they say that once you feel the mate bond, you can't deny it. This was the situation at the moment because no matter how I could've wished this was a joke, it wasn't.

I was mated to a man, a literal fellow man.

Like, I Bennett Cross, was mated to a man.

And not any other man, Lucas Storm, my rival, my enemy, and my foe.

It seems like the same thing that registered in my head, registered in Lucas's. Because he turned around and bolted, running faster than I had ever seen him run.

Lucas's friends followed after him, and mine, they couldn't stop looking at me like I had seen a ghost.

"Bennett, Bennett.....h-how.....dude..... Lucas?, Lucas Storm is your mate?"

Whispers of my now questionable sexuality filled the air, my arm was being grabbed by Ryder as he led me away from the crowd.

It felt like I was holding my breath for too long, and the moment I was outside, I screamed.

A deafening scream packed with frustration and bound with shock.

"Bennett, calm down, please."

"Calm down, calm down?!" I yelled, tugging at my hair. I fell to my knees and gripped the wet grass.

"Ryder, can't you see?" I questioned, my voice shaky, my fingers were even vibrating. "Can't you see the fucking problem!?"

What would I tell my father?

How would I explain it?

That I had been mated to a Storm, Lucas Storm.

BENNETI flopped on my bed, my phone in hand, the same way I’d been for the past hour. Scrolling, refreshing, and glancing at my last message to Lucas.{You good? You’ve been quiet.}Which was left on read.No reply. Not even the little “typing…” bubble that usually popped up.That was weird.I knew Lucas was one to ghost especially when he was spiraling. But even then, he’d send some one-word reply like “Fine” or “Busy” just to shut me up.I sighed and tossed the phone onto the nightstand, rubbing my face. I’d spent the afternoon downstairs with my mom, trying to distract her from the migraines, the visits from the healers and witches, and all the pain she was trying so hard to smile through. I thought checking on Lucas later would be fine. But now… something felt off.Just as I sat up again, thinking of calling instead, my bedro

*Trigger warning: Self-harm and suicidal thoughts is mentioned in this chapter.*LUCAS’S POV.I locked the door the second the guards shoved me back inside my room.My stomach was already twisting, bile scratching up my throat before I even reached the bathroom. I dropped to my knees, my fingers gripping the toilet seat as I threw up everything in me.My lunch from the previous day, liquid and whatever pieces of myself and my soul were left. The stench of cum mixed with bile in my throat made me gag harder.I didn’t care that it was the third time today that I was throwing up, I needed to feel empty. I needed to feel… something that wasn’t this crawling filth under my skin. After a few minutes, I managed to haul myself from the floor and face the sink. I scrubbed my mouth so hard with my toothbrush that my tongue became numb.I got into the shower and turned the water to scalding hot and let it wash my sins away, wash their filthy hands from me. I scrubbed so hard with my sponge. I

RYDER’S POVThere were days school felt like a blur, and then there were days like this where the tense atmosphere gave away the fact that it was going to be an eventful day.I dumped my bag on the table, half expecting Kael to stroll in with that half-smirk he wore when he had gossip or a joke up his sleeve or when he just wanted to get under my skin by flirting with me.But by the fourth period, neither he nor Lucas had shown up, and the thoughts in my head grew louder.“Bennett’s skipping today too,” I muttered under my breath, remembering the text from last night. ‘Spending the day with my mum. She’s not doing great.’ That made sense. But Lucas?Lucas was fine yesterday. Sure, he looked a little… off when he walked past me with Bennett to go see Bennett’s mum but he was fine enough to growl at me like his usual self.So where the hell was he?The question stuck in my throat until the principal walked in at the end of fourth period and gave that strained, too-neutral smile of his.

*Trigger Warning: Chapter contains detailed description of physical and sexual assault.*LUCAS'S POV.When I stepped in, the house was semi-dark; the only light was shining from the sitting room. My boots thudded against the marble floor louder than I intended as I approached the staircase.Thoughts of my outing today with Bennett and his mum flashed through my mind and I couldn't help the smile that pulled at the corner. Of my lips.“Lucas.”My father’s intimidating voice invaded my thoughts. I froze. He stood at the edge of the hallway, dressed in black slacks and a deep green shirt. His eyes blazed with cold disdain, arms crossed tightly over his chest.“Where were you?” he asked.“School,” I said, carefully. “I had a project—”“Don’t lie to me.”He moved quickly and before I had the chance to get away from him, his hands closed around my wrist with bruising force as he yanked me forward. I didn’t resist.I didn't have the strength to fight him off.“Training started three hours

BENNETT’S POV The car was quiet for a long time after we pulled away from the restaurant. Just the low hum of the engine and the occasional sound of tires rolling over old asphalt. I had one hand on the wheel, the other one resting on my thigh, fingers twitching with nerves I didn’t want to name. My Mum finally broke the silence. “He’s good for you, you know.” I didn’t have to ask who she meant. “Mum.” “No, listen,” she said, angling herself slightly in her seat. “Lucas is kind. A bit reserved, yes. But he’s steady. He sees you.” She paused, her voice soft. “And you’ve always needed someone who sees past your control.” I chuckled under my breath. “You make me sound like a tyrant.” She smiled faintly. “You’re a little bit of one.” The streetlights washed over her features, making her look both young and painfully tired. I glanced at her from the corner of my eye. She was leaning against the window like her bones had finally gotten too heavy to carry. I exhaled a

BENNETT’S POVThe scent of grilled meat and fried something-that-smelled-amazing wafted out from the diner’s kitchen as I leaned against the counter, waiting for our orders to be packed up. I checked my phone. No messages from Lucas. Not that I expected any. He sure must be having a swell time with my mum for him not to be cursing me over the phone. There were messages from Avery. She has been calling and texting nonstop since our last tutorial. I had been avoiding her in school too but I was going to have to tell her off soon.Unless I want a murderous Lucas on my hands. He has been aggressive and possessive since that night.I drummed my fingers against the metal edge of the counter, glancing out the glass window just for the hell of it and then I saw the last person I expected to see around here.My jaw tightened as my brows furrowed.
