I wasn’t aware how long it had been. All around me was nothing but silence, an expanse of black with no edges, no sky, no ground, no light. Just endless drifting. At first, I thought maybe this was death, that quiet numbness people whispered about when the body finally surrendered. Until one night, when I suddenly saw a beam of light in a certain direction.
