Roland’s POV

The cold inside the arena usually cleared my head.

The moment my blades hit the ice, everything else turned off. No drama, no noise, no distractions. Just the sharp smell of frozen air and the sound of steel cutting through ice. That was how I stayed at the top of my game for years.

But today? Today, the ice wasn’t doing a damn thing.

I skated in slow circles around the center line, my eyes locked on one person. Jeffery.

He was standing near the blue line, leaning on his hockey

Roland’s POVMy whole body went completely still. I couldn’t even breathe. I looked down at Jeffery, who was frozen on his knees right in front of me, his hands clutching my shorts. His eyes were wide open with panic. I knew my eyes looked just as scared. I was completely exposed, hard as a rock, and one second away from having my whole life ruined.Footsteps were moving on the other side of the row of lockers. Heavy shoes on the floor.I held my breath until my chest started to hurt. I couldn’t move a single inch. If Coach took five more steps and looked around the corner, I was done. Everything I worked my whole life for would be gone. He would see me in an empty locker room with my rival’s twin brother on his knees in front of me. The whole school would talk about it. The team would hate me.The footsteps slowed down. Then they stopped right at the corner of our row.I kept staring down at Jeffery. Looking at him on the floor, with his mouth open and his face totally red, made

  • Skating on Thin Ice    Chapter 34: The Pressure Point

Jeffery’s POVThe locker room smelled like hot steam, body spray, and sweaty equipment. Guys were shouting across the room, slamming metal doors shut, and laughing about practice. I sat on the wooden bench, taking way too long to unstrap my shin guards. My fingers were shaking so badly I could barely undo the velcro. I took a deep breath, trying to calm down. Every time someone walked past me, I flinched, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird. Five minutes. That’s what Roland had whispered in my ear on the ice. Five minutes, and I better not keep him waiting. My whole body was buzzing. The heat from the shower room was spilling out into the main area, making the air thick and heavy. But the steam had nothing to do with why my face was burning. It was Roland. It was always Roland. I could hear his voice echoing in my head over and over again. Fake. That stupid word kept running through my mind, sending a sharp wave of heat straight down to my stomach. Out on the ice,

Jeffery. He was standing near the blue line, leaning on his hockey stick and breathing heavy. His jersey looked a size too big on his frame, hanging loose around his shoulders. He was trying so hard to act tough, trying to pretend he belonged on a first-line hockey squad like his twin brother. But I knew the truth. Underneath all that bulky padding, he was shaking. And the worst part? I couldn’t stop looking at him. Ever since this morning, when he walked out of the bathroom smelling like hot soap, my brain had been completely fried. There was this crazy pull

  • Skating on Thin Ice    Chapter 32: The Unspoken Signs

Jeffery’s POVThe hot water blasted down on my back, but I still couldn’t shake off the cold feeling from the dream.I stood under the showerhead, letting the steam fill the tiny bathroom until I could barely breathe. The water was almost scalding hot, turning my skin bright red, but I kept the handle turned all the way to the right. I wanted it to burn. I needed it to wash away the lingering ghost of those weird hands, that dark forest, and that strange, booming voice that was still ringing inside my ears. You are the one. What the hell was that even supposed to mean?I grabbed the soap and started scrubbing my arms like crazy. I scrubbed until my skin was sore, but the words wouldn’t wash off. They felt stuck under my skin, right next to my bones. Every time I closed my eyes, I was right back in that creepy dream, surrounded by fog and shadows, listening to a voice that sounded like it belonged to something huge and dangerous.I leaned my head back into the spray, letting the w

  • Skating on Thin Ice    Chapter 31: A Played-Off Panic

Roland’s POVMy eyes snapped open in the dim light. That gray dawn was just peeking through the curtains, making everything look blurry and cold. My heart was already pounding before I even knew why. Jeffery was next to me, his body stiff and trembling like he’d been struck by lightning. Sweat slicked his skin against mine. I could feel the fear pouring off him, thick and real, like something alive in the room with us.I quickly wrapped my arms around him, pulling him closer without thinking. Protective instinct kicked in hard. My own secrets? Yeah, they were still there gnawing at me, but right now, none of that mattered. This was Jeffery trembling in my bed, and I had to do something about it. I shifted slightly, propping myself up on one elbow so I could see his face better. His eyes were wide open, staring at nothing, chest rising and falling way too fast.“Hey,” I whispered, my voice rough from sleep. “Talk to me. What is it? Bad dream?”He jerked like my words burned him. Then h

  • Skating on Thin Ice    Chapter 30: A Sanctuary of Skin

POV: JefferyI shot upright in bed as if someone had yanked me by the collar, chest heaving, sweat sticking my shirt to my back. The room was still pitch black, that heavy early-morning quiet where everything feels muffled. My heart hammered against my ribs so hard I thought it might crack them. The dream clung to me, cold and slimy, as if it didn’t want to let go.Dad’s voice had sounded so real. Deep, the way it used to when he was serious about pack stuff. “Jeffery,” he’d said, looking right at me, not past me like usual. “You’re the chosen one.” Chosen. Me. The words kept echoing in my skull as I blinked hard, trying to shake off the fog.Lucien was always special. My twin, yeah, but the golden shadow. Everyone saw him first—stronger, sharper, the one the pack actually wanted around. I was just... there. The defective twin. The omega who never quite fit. Being his shadow kept me grounded, sure. It kept me safe from the whispers, from the way eyes would slide over me like I was bro

  • Skating on Thin Ice    Chapter 4: The Encounter

I hated every second of this new life. I hated waking up early for interviews I did not care about. I hated people staring at me everywhere I went like I belonged to them now. I hated the cameras outside Northcrest Academy and the way students suddenly moved aside whenever I walked past. Most of

  • Skating on Thin Ice    Chapter 3: Stepping In

I lingered in front of the mirror longer than I should have. The reflection staring back at me felt wrong. My black hair replaced the usual silver. Lucien's face looked back instead of my own. It was like a life not meant for me was staring through the glass. I adjusted the collar of my Northcrest

My fist hit the locker door before I could stop myself. The loud thud echoed down the empty hallway like a gunshot, bouncing off the concrete walls and metal benches. My fists stung immediately, but I barely felt it. The anger was too loud inside my head. "You think this is a game?" I snapped, tur

  • Skating on Thin Ice    chapter five: The Silence

I stood frozen in the dim concrete hallway, my back pressed against the cold wall like it could somehow save me. The silence pressed down, thick and heavy. My pulse hammered so fiercely I could feel it in my teeth. Every part of me screamed to run, but my legs refused to move. Roland did not rush.
