Chapter 9

Author: Lena Seven
Jeff did not visit the hospital the week after that, and once Cecilia was better, she checked herself out of the hospital on her own.

Back at their apartment, she packed up her things. For the things she did not need anymore, she had the cleaning lady toss them out. The things she wanted to keep, she had a delivery service box up and shipped to Riverie City.

She had her own place in Riverie City before she came to the capital, so she did not have to worry about where to put her belongings.

After that, Cecilia got rid of everything they had bought together in the apartment, like their matching coffee mugs and pajamas.

She was leaving, and it was time to wipe away every last trace of her life there.

Time to clear the way for Jeff's new sweetheart.

Once she finished, Cecilia went to look up flight tickets on her phone but saw a post from Yvonne instead.

[It's so wonderful to have someone with you at the prenatal checkup. Our little one is doing great, and so is my big guy.]

The photo showed two hands holding tight. The mole on one hand was right where Jeff's would be.

Cecilia clicked on Yvonne's profile and saw all the posts she had made that week:

[A new little life is growing inside me, and it's so touching.]

[A man has to really love you to want you to have his baby. Some people just don't get it.]

[It doesn't matter how much she tries to hold on, his heart is here with me, and so is he.]

All the photos showed Jeff taking care of her in different ways.

Even though the photo did not show the person's full face, Cecilia could tell it was Jeff from the little bits that showed. She was looking at the pictures so intently that she did not notice it had gotten dark outside.

When Jeff walked in and flicked on the light, he jumped a little at seeing Cecilia there. "Cecilia, you're out of the hospital? When did you get back?" he asked.

Cecilia put her phone away and said without much feeling, "This morning."

"Why didn't you tell me to come get you? I'm sorry, I've been really swamped with work at the company these days," Jeff started to say, but he stopped when he saw that Cecilia was not even looking at him. It was like she did not care where he had been or what he had been up to.

She just said, "I'm going to take a shower," and went into the bedroom.

Jeff felt a growing worry inside him.

Over the next few days, he made sure to come home from work on time, and Cecilia was always there, but his worry did not go away. He tried to talk to her about their wedding plans. "My assistant brought over some wedding stuff this morning. You got it all, right?" he asked.

Cecilia had her head down in a book and did not look up. "It's all in the living room."

"Let's open the boxes and start decorating…" Jeff began, walking over to her.

However, Cecilia quickly got up from the bed. "I'm going to take a shower. You can do the decorating," she said.

He reached out a hand, but he only caught the edge of her nightgown before it slipped away.

His worry deepened. He went to the living room and saw the pile of wedding things on the floor. The apartment should have felt fuller with all the new stuff, but somehow it felt more empty than ever.

He was feeling all mixed up inside and decided to change into his pajamas and take a shower, but he just could not find his favorite pajamas anywhere.

"Cecilia, where's that black pajama set you gave me? The matching one for couples?"

"I threw it out." Her reply was blunt.

He was taken aback. "Why'd you throw them out? I really liked those pajamas."

"They were old, so I threw them out." Cecilia, with her backpack slung over her shoulder, walked to the door. Today was her last day in Zephyr City. She was getting ready to go out and cancel all her things—bank cards, phone cards, everything.

She figured she would not be coming back anyway.

Jeff's brow furrowed as he heard that, and he said quickly. "You gotta remember to get me a new set. Wait, where are you headed?"

He hurried to the door, calling out to Cecilia, who was already waiting for the elevator.

Cecilia spoke evenly: "I've got some errands."

Jeff wanted to ask what she was up to, but the elevator dinged, and Cecilia stepped in and went down.

For some reason, seeing Cecilia like that made Jeff's heart race. He had that nagging feeling that something was about to happen.

He went back inside, pulled out his phone, and sent Cecilia a message: [Don't forget we're getting our marriage certificate tomorrow.]

Cecilia did not answer, so he sent another message: [?]

Hours later, she finally replied: [Got it.]

Jeff stared at those two words for the longest time. It was not until Yvonne called, sobbing and saying she was not feeling good, that he turned off his phone with a grim look and stood up to go see Yvonne.

Cecilia and Franklin's engagement party was cozy and full of love.Even though it was just an engagement, Franklin had an internationally famous dress team make a special dress just for Cecilia.Girls just could not resist pretty dresses, and Cecilia, who studied design, was no exception. She was thrilled when she tried it on and gave Franklin a quick peck on the cheek."I see that you went all out. Thanks a bunch!"She was about to walk away, but Franklin playfully pulled her back into his arms, grinning. "That 'thank you' isn't good enough. I don't accept it."Cecilia giggled. "So, what do you want then?"Franklin whispered in her ear, "Tonight..."Cecilia blushed and rolled her eyes at him. "You're such a tease!"Franklin just laughed and gave her a couple more pecks on the cheek."I just can't help it, sweetheart. When I see you, all I can think about is being a little bit naughty."Cecilia's cheeks turned pink as she told him to stop being silly. She then nudged him out

Cecilia and Franklin ended up together, just like it was meant to be.Two friends, who had never really made a big deal about their feelings, shared a love that grew quietly and steadily. On the day they celebrated the completion of the hot spring resort's design, everyone was having a great time at the party. Out of nowhere, Franklin took out a ring as big as a pigeon egg and, feeling brave from the party drinks, held it out to Cecilia."Cecilia, will you marry me?"Elias, who was nearby, snorted. "You think it's that easy to marry my sister? A cheap ring isn't going to cut it."However, Franklin had a surprise up his sleeve. He signaled his assistant, who quickly brought over a big pile of papers.Franklin handed them to Elias."Here's 20% of my company's shares. I've already put them in Cecilia's name. These are the three projects from my company that you really liked. I'm giving them to the Jones Group for free."I've also put all four of my villas in Cecilia's name. And t

As Cecilia listened to Jeff's confession, she was stunned and could not believe what she was hearing. Everything that had confused her before suddenly clicked into place.Jeff had not stopped loving her out of the blue. He had chosen not to love her.She let out a small laugh. "So, you always thought I'd stay with you, not because I loved you but because you thought I owed you, right? You saw me as repayment from the Jones family, like I was just a thing, right?"Her words were rough, but they made sense.Jeff did not say a word.Cecilia finally got it. She looked up at Jeff, studying his face carefully."Jeff, it hit me all of a sudden. I never really knew you. I guess I was in love with a made-up version of you all these years, not the real you. Now that you've gone and broken that illusion, let's not make things harder on each other."She grabbed Franklin's hand, did not say a word, turned around, and walked out of the hospital. In the hallway, it was soon just Jeff and Yvon

Yvonne's eyes widened in shock, and the sudden accusation made her voice shake. "I... I don't know what you're talking about."Cecilia's voice stayed even and calm. "You paid off the doctor at Capital to lie for you, didn't you? That's why you kept saying your stomach hurt at the worst times, to get Jeff's attention. And on the day we were supposed to get our marriage license, you pretended to be really sick so Jeff would worry and forget all about it, right?"Cecilia had been suspicious for a while. After seeing how quickly Yvonne got up after her surgery and how she had secretly given cash to her doctor, Cecilia decided to test things out.She gave the doctor three thousand dollars, pretending it was a thank-you gift from Yvonne. The doctor was thrilled to see the money and spilled the beans without Cecilia even asking. At that moment, Cecilia was sure she was right.Yvonne, realizing Cecilia had figured it all out, turned pale and dropped the act."What good does it do to talk

"No way! You're just saying that because you're mad!"Jeff could not take in what he was hearing. He had always been so sure of himself, believing that Cecilia's love for him was so strong that he could do anything, even mess around with Yvonne without consequences.Even after Cecilia came back to Riverie City, he kept bothering her, sure that she still loved him. However, Cecilia's actions when he was in danger, and the words she just said, sent Jeff into a total panic.Cecilia spoke up once more. "I'm not just saying this because I'm mad. I'm telling the truth."He looked at her with desperate eyes, still not believing it. "Alright, then tell me. When did you stop loving me? And why?""It all started when I found out about you and Yvonne. That's when I knew you weren't the person I loved anymore."Cecilia said that calmly. She had thought about that question a lot during those lonely nights in the city, and she had her answer ready.Jeff shook his head, his eyes showing he

At the party following the auction, Cecilia had just stepped out when she heard her name called from behind. She turned and saw Jeff. He was clutching the rare emerald bangle and offered it to Cecilia."Cecilia, you've forgiven me so many times. I want to make it up to you, for all of it—if you’ll just let me.""The ring I proposed to you with was chosen years ago. It's not big, but it shows how much I want to marry you. The one Yvonne showed you, she bought with my card without asking. I know it hurt you, so please, take this bangle as my way of saying I'm sorry."Jeff had come to realize just how much Cecilia meant to him after they broke up.He knew he could not lose her and would do anything to win her back.Cecilia looked at the jade in his hand and gave a light laugh, shaking her head."No thanks, I don't need your apology, and I can't accept such an expensive gift."Yvonne just tried to trick me not too long ago, and I don't want anything to do with you guys anymore," Ce
