Chapter 3

Author: Goodtale
Peter tossed his cigarette on the ground and crushed it under his leather shoe. "Mr. Walker, listen to me. Times have changed. It's time you accepted reality."

Veronica brought a bench out of the cafeteria, stepped on it, and grabbed the banner hanging in the center of the wall.

I had personally delivered that banner to the couple back then, bearing the words "Preferred Food Service Provider".

Veronica ripped the red banner straight down the middle, hopped off the bench, and crumpled it into a ball. She walked out the kitchen door and hurled it into a bin full of greasy leftovers.

"I never wanted that damn nonsense anyway."

Richard and Ethan followed suit too.

Richard hurried back to his shop and brought out a wooden sign that read "Authorized Supplier for Redford Development".

He hurled it onto the concrete, picked up a shovel by the door, and brought it down twice, breaking the sign in half. He even stomped on the pieces until they splintered.

Meanwhile, Ethan tore down the metal sign "Cigarettes and Beer at Special Prices for Construction Workers" and tossed it into the trash can outside.

"From now on, we'll be dealing with wealthy customers looking at properties worth millions."

Ethan spat on the ground. "We don't want to be associated with construction workers like you."

Veronica planted her hands on her hips, standing next to the food-waste bin as she waved dismissively at my construction workers and me.

"Go on then. Take your men with you and get out of here! Don't bother coming by here anymore. Just looking at you makes me sick!"

Aaron and dozens of workers stood there with bloodshot eyes. They were gripping their hard hats so tightly that the plastic buckled beneath their fingers.

A few younger workers even lunged forward at Richard and Ethan, itching for a fight. But I held out an arm to keep everyone behind me.

I turned to look at Peter and Veronica, along with Richard and Ethan standing next to them.

Peter leaned against the doorframe and lit another cigarette, while Veronica grinned smugly at me.

All I said was, "If you don't want construction workers coming to your cafeteria, none of them will come back again."

Veronica burst into laughter. "Are you trying to scare us? This place will never go out of business!"

Peter shook his head too, looking unbothered.

I didn't spare them another glance and waved at the workers behind me. "Come on. We're going back to the site."

Aaron gritted his teeth and led dozens of workers after me.

Behind me, we heard Veronica and Ethan laughing shrilly at us. "Don't come crawling back. Just go back to your little slums and eat your scraps!"

The moment we arrived at the construction site entrance, the workers went off to their respective teams.

I got into a black SUV parked outside the project office and rolled up the window, shutting out the noise. I then pulled an encrypted tablet out of my briefcase, tapped the screen and unlocked it with my fingerprint and passcode.

The system interface popped up, showing the words "Redford Development Command Center".

On-site, everyone called me Mr. Walker, and within the company, I was also in charge of the new 80-billion-dollar city development project. I also served as its executive director.

This project was given the green light three years ago. Initially, the company intended to build the workers' residential complex 1.86 miles away in Hemville, but I saw how hard life was for the dozens of families in the old neighborhood facing displacement by the redevelopment. So I marked out a new location on the plans and insisted on moving the residential complex here.

I was the one who arranged to have the water lines hooked up. I personally approved the transformer. I was also the one who made sure hundreds of workers visited their stores every day.

I opened the logistics and support page and pulled up the meal-service agreements and approved vendor lists for all six projects.

I tapped the screen a few times, immediately terminating all supply contracts with Peter's cafeteria, Richard's safety supplies store, and Ethan's convenience store.

At the same time, I authorized the opening of the upscale No. 2 residential complex. It was supposed to be for the technical staff at headquarters, who weren't due to move in until the second half of the year. The place had central air conditioning, private bathrooms, and a huge cafeteria run by the company itself.

I began typing out my orders.

Starting at 6:00 am tomorrow, all six construction crews would dine at No. 2 residential complex. The workers' daily meal allowance would increase from 18 to 30 dollars, with the funds credited directly to their electronic wristbands.

The south gate facing that street would be closed permanently. No one would be allowed through.

Once I had confirmed everything, I tapped "Send".

A line of green text popped up on the screen. "Orders executed. Notifications sent to all project group chats."

It was one in the morning. The merchants' group chat kept buzzing with new messages.

But the moment Richard sent a screenshot in the chat, the buzzing group chat fell silent.

Half a year later, with summer in full swing, the main district of Redford Development's 80-billion-dollar new city project was finally complete. No. 2 residential complex had become a shining example of construction-site management.16 central air-conditioning units filled the spacious, clean dining hall, keeping the space cool. Over 600 workers had just taken their hot showers and changed into clean cotton T-shirts. They queued up at the long marble counter, trays in hand. Four long rows of piping-hot food lined the counter, including roast duck, meatloaf, and steamed sea bass. Harold approached a large metal pot with his loaded tray and got himself two generous scoops of beef stew. No one knocked the ladle out of his hand. The woman behind the counter even added an extra duck leg to his plate with a smile. "You young men work really hard, so you should eat up. There's plenty for everyone!"The workers sat at brand-new wooden tables, enjoying the air-conditioning and eating

The fight at Peter's cafeteria on South Street lasted half an hour. By the time the police got there, Peter, Veronica, Richard, and Ethan were lying in pools of blood. Two of Veronica's front teeth had been knocked out. Peter had three broken ribs, and Richard and Ethan's faces were covered in blood. The cafeteria's tables and chairs had been smashed to pieces. The police retrieved data from Veronica's smashed phone. They handcuffed all four of them before shoving them into the police car. On the third day, in the morning, Redford Development's legal team had split into two groups, with 24 senior attorneys in total. One group filed a formal complaint with the city police department and the local prosecutor's office, accusing Veronica of extorting 50,000 dollars from Cody through violence and threats. The sum involved was substantial, and the crime was considered particularly serious. The other team filed a civil lawsuit against Peter, Richard, and Ethan's businesses, accusing the

Third-Person POVRedford Development's comment was pinned right at the top of Veronica's livestream. By now, the entire livestream had gone completely silent. The 100,000 comments flying across the screen earlier suddenly came to a stop. Veronica held her phone, staring at Redford Development's verified account. She opened her mouth as if to say something, but nothing came out. A few seconds later, the tide began to turn in Cody's favor."Redford Development just responded from their official account! Is it for real?" "Ma'am, what's this petition Mr. Walker's talking about?" "Bloody fingerprints? A petition? So there's more to this story?" "Hurry up and show it to us. Let's prove that capitalist wrong!"Cold sweat beaded on the tip of Veronica's nose. Sweat trickled down her face, leaving two clean trails in the layer of grime. She yelled into the microphone, her voice wavering. "What petition? Don't let that heartless man fool you guys!"Veronica hurriedly pulled out

Third-Person POVAt 10:00 pm, the overhead lights were off in Peter's cafeteria, leaving a dim table lamp to illuminate the place. Veronica turned the phone camera toward the kitchen. The beef had already turned black, and the thawed prawns smelled pungent and rancid. She turned the camera toward Peter, who was crouched in the corner with his head in his hands, sobbing quietly. Then Veronica turned the camera to herself and sobbed hysterically. "Everyone, you see all that food? We had to borrow money from our relatives just to afford it!"We've worked hard for the past three years, cooking for these construction workers. We've been getting up before dawn and working until late into the night, and we only charge enough to cover the cost of each boxed lunch!"Now that the construction project is almost done, the boss doesn't want us around anymore. He's abusing his power by blocking off the road and forbidding his workers from eating at our place!"This afternoon, we went to tal

Richard and Ethan's legs turned to jelly, and they crumpled onto the scorching pavement.Richard raised his hands and slapped himself hard across the face, alternating between his left and right cheeks. The sounds echoed down the empty road. "Mr. Walker! Mr. Walker! We messed up! We weren't thinking straight! It was Veronica's fault! She tried to drive a wedge between us!"She said we'd strike it rich when the luxury properties went on sale, and she made us cut ties with the construction site!"Ethan started groveling at my feet. "Mr. Walker, my money's tied up in cigarettes and beer. That's tens of thousands right there, and that's all my family has!"I'm begging you. Just let your workers come out and buy some cigarettes or water. Even if they only buy two cheap packs a day, that would be enough for me!"Peter stood off to the side, trembling all over. He stared at the documents scattered on the road, and he remembered how David had treated me with utmost respect. He finally r

Third-Person POVThe electric turnstile at the No. 2 residential complex slowly came to a stop. Over a dozen guards in black uniforms rushed out, carrying riot shields and crowd control equipment. They formed a neat line outside the entrance, blocking it completely. Construction workers and technicians passing by stopped in their tracks, staring icily from behind the fence.Peter's legs nearly gave out at the sight of the towering guards. He quickly pulled out a crushed pack of premium cigarettes and strode toward the head of security. He handed it over with a fawning smile. "Sir, have a cigarette. It'll help you relax. We're not here to cause trouble. We're from the cafeteria on South Street. "There was a bit of a misunderstanding yesterday. Mr. Walker got upset and took all the workers with him. "Now we've got hundreds of pounds of beef and prawns in the kitchen, and it's all going to waste. Could you please put in a good word for us with Mr. Walker? Please convince him to
