Chapter 3

Author: Litchi Froot
Before I could react, Zack suddenly pulled me aside and demanded, "Wendy is your best friend. How could you publicly shame her online?"

"I don't know what you're talking about!" I yanked my hand away, but Zack only sneered and held his phone up to my face.

A post on the campus forum had blown up.

Someone posted pictures of Wendy, claiming she had stayed by my side as my best friend while secretly trying to steal my boyfriend.

Zack looked at me with deep disappointment. "Wendy and I are only getting married because of our families. Do you really have to make this so ugly?

"She has never looked down on you for being poor and even went out of her way to help you. How are you any different from a selfish ingrate?"

I tried to tell him I hadn't done it, but Zack didn't believe me.

When the announcer called my name, Zack left me with one cold warning. "Don't regret this!"

The graduation ceremony was being livestreamed online.

I forced myself to stay calm and walked over to the center of the stage. I had barely finished introducing myself when angry shouts came from the crowd.

"Disgusting! How can someone who cheated on her thesis get to be a top graduate?"

"Get off the stage!"

I turned around and looked at the big screen. It showed proof that I had hired someone to write my thesis and cheated my way into being named a top graduate!

The crowd erupted, and I immediately denied it. "This is fake! I didn't do it!"

But the school was afraid the situation would get worse and cut off my microphone.

Amid a flood of insults, I was forced off the stage.

Backstage, Zack stood with his arms crossed, staring coldly at me.

I clenched my teeth and held back the tears threatening to fall. "Was destroying me what you wanted?"

My vision blurred with tears.

In a daze, I remembered the look of concern on Zack's face when he learned Mom was seriously ill.

"Leah, I'll work hard and make money to help Carla get better. Then you can marry me without any worries," he had said.

But now, Zack walked toward me with a dark look in his eyes, his voice calmly cruel.

"The best way to shift people's attention is to give them an even bigger scandal. Leah, I wouldn't have had to do this if you hadn't made that post.

"You brought this on yourself, and you can't blame anyone else for it."

In the end, my thesis was invalidated, and I was expelled.

I collapsed to the floor, too devastated to speak.

My phone suddenly started buzzing nonstop with hateful messages.

"You stole your best friend's fiance and then smeared her name? You have no shame!"

"You even tried to blame her? You should just die!"

I looked up in disbelief.

Wendy stood nearby and shrugged. "Leah, we've known each other for over ten years. You should know I'm not the kind of person who takes things lying down."

When I was five years old, a boy at preschool pulled my hair. Wendy grabbed a pair of scissors and cut off all his hair.

When I was 12 years old, a drunk man followed me. Wendy grabbed her backpack, hit him over the head with it, and ran off with me.

She had been terrified too, but she still held my hand tightly. "You're my best friend! We're supposed to look out for each other."

When Wendy was 18 years old, she gave up on going to art school and spent more than six months studying day and night so she could attend the same college as me.

I felt bad seeing the dark circles under her eyes, but she didn't care.

"You're too soft," she said. "What if someone bullies you? I won't feel better unless I'm there to protect you!"

And now, she said, "Growing up, I've never let anyone walk all over me. You betrayed me and posted that about me on the campus forum, making me take all that abuse. Don't you think you should pay for it?

"It's only fair that I give you the same treatment."

Wendy had posted on the campus forum, claiming I had tried to steal her fiance instead. She shared proof that she had been engaged to Zack long ago.

There were already more than a thousand posts attacking me.

Zack looked at my numb expression and seemed to feel sorry for me.

He was about to speak when my phone rang.

Mom's trembling voice came through. "Leah, did you get involved with someone else's boyfriend?"

I turned around and saw Zack staring at me with bloodshot eyes.He rushed over and reached out to grab my wrist. "Do you even know who Ryan is? Stay away from him!"Before he could touch me, someone stepped between us.Ryan frowned slightly, his presence quietly intimidating. "Leah can make her own choices. You don't get to decide for her."Zack's expression hardened with anger. "She's my fiance! What happens between us is none of your business!"I sighed.I had expected Zack to come looking for me. Not long ago, the news reported that Zack had caused a scene at his wedding and sent Wendy to prison.I knew this day would come, but I hadn't expected it so soon. When I stayed silent, Zack became even more desperate. "Leah, I had no idea Wendy could be so cruel. I've already sent her to prison, and I'll never have anything to do with her again!"He continued, "Mom has thought it through too. She doesn't care about your family background. As long as we love each other, that's all

Leah's POVMeanwhile, I was in a small town in the south, where it felt like spring all year round. The town wasn't busy or modern. Old brick buildings lined the streets, but there was something peaceful about the place. Most importantly, no one here knew me or judged me. I could finally leave all those awful people and memories behind. While I was lost in thought, someone suddenly slid a cup of coffee toward me.I turned and saw Ryan Slatten smiling at me.Ryan had been two grades ahead of me in high school. When I started high school, I felt deeply insecure because I had come from a small town.Ryan was one of the top students in his senior year. At the school assembly before the SAT, he stood beneath the flag and spoke with conviction. "Don't let today's wins or losses hold you back. Your future is full of possibilities!"Those simple words gave me the courage to keep pushing forward. The day before the SAT, I finally got the nerve to find him. I wished him luck on the S

Gasps of shock filled the church. The priest thought he had heard wrong and quickly asked again, "Mr. Warner, what did you just say?"This time, Zack spoke even more firmly. "I won't marry Wendy! This murderer isn't worthy of me."As everyone stared in shock, Zack waved his hand. A video began playing on the large screen behind him.It showed Wendy causing Carla's death. "If I were you, I'd just go die!"Wendy's cruel voice rang clearly through the church.Everyone looked at Wendy with fear and disgust.Wendy was stunned. "That's impossible. How did you know?"Zack sneered as he looked at Wendy's terrified face.He said icily, "Did you really think no one would find out what you did? I didn't want to reveal who I really was to Leah, but I truly loved her!"I had already installed an advanced security camera at the hospital so I could know how Carla was doing at any time."You caused Carla's death, and you still thought you could marry into the Warner family? Wendy Carter,

Wendy stared at Zack for a while. When she saw nothing unusual in his expression, she smiled. "Okay. I can't wait for our wedding."In the days that followed, Zack prepared for his wedding to Wendy while secretly searching for any news about Leah.Wendy seemed bothered by the posts about her on the campus forum. She demanded the best of everything for the wedding, making the wedding as grand as possible.Zack's mother, Marsha Vanberg, privately confronted him. She was clearly unhappy. "Wendy is getting too full of herself. Marrying you is already a step up for her. How dare she make such a big fuss about the wedding?"Marsha had never thought much of Wendy. She had only reluctantly agreed to the marriage because Zack insisted. But Zack didn't get upset when he heard Marsha's complaints.Instead, he told his assistant to send out another round of invitations, giving Wendy all the recognition she wanted.Marsha stormed out, slamming the door behind her. Wendy was even more ple

At the time, Zack had gone to the stairwell to take a call from his family about the wedding ceremony. It was important. A high-profile marriage between the Warner and Carter families could bring in a lot of new business and investment. Before Zack went into the stairwell, he had worried Leah might lash out and hurt Wendy, so he left a few bodyguards to watch her.But not long after he left, he saw Wendy turn and walk into Carla's hospital room.At the time, Carla had just woken up. When she saw Wendy, someone she knew well, she asked worriedly, "Wendy, sweetheart, tell me what happened to Leah. "Why is everyone online saying she stole someone else's boyfriend? And why was she expelled?"Wendy leaned down and whispered something in her ear. Carla's breathing suddenly became rapid."What did she say?" Zack demanded. The police officer shook his head. "The equipment was limited, and Wendy was blocking the view. We can't tell what she said by reading her lips."We only know th

Zack and Wendy were already under a lot of attention because of what happened on the campus forum. Now the police were speaking loudly, drawing everyone's attention.People began whispering among themselves."Murder? Aren't they rich? How could they do something like that?""I thought Leah had snapped and done something. She was expelled, so those four years of studying were basically wasted. Could there be some mistake?""Why is it only the two of them? Where's Leah?"Zack looked at the officers and tried to reason with them. "You've got the wrong people. We just came from the hospital. We didn't do anything."But the police didn't waste any more time. They put Zack and Wendy straight into the police car.On the way to the police station, Zack was clearly annoyed, but he stayed calm and kept the manners he'd been taught since childhood.Wendy, however, looked terrified and kept mumbling to herself.Zack frowned, sensing that something was wrong. "What's with you?"He truly
