Chapter 16

Alyssa

It feels like my heart is shattering repeatedly and turning into mere shards of its former self. I'm sniffling in my bed, leaning against the wall with dull eyes while Sleepy is sitting next to me. The tall fairy is staring at his naked feet, playing with his toes while saying nothing.

"It hurts," I tell him.

The fairy sighs and leans his chin against his knees. His arms are hugging his leg. "Of course it does,"

I laugh at his honesty, despite the sharp, excruciating pain trying to kill me from within. "You're supposed to say something comforting!"

His mouth twitch, and one of his fingers touch his lips as he turns his attention to me. "Like what? Do you want me to state the obvious and tell you Azrael is a dick, because please, I knew it from the beginning!"

Shockingly, I laugh out loud at that, snorting and everything. Tears sprout from my eyes, and my lips curl high up on my face. "What's with you two and your constant war?!"
