Chapter 2

Author: Isle of Moon
My face practically said, Are you serious?

She had been the one to confront me that day and say she hated how I constantly clung to her and depended on her.

She was also the one who had thrown some mysterious AI installation file at me.

"Why would I tell you?"

Sabrina's face darkened when I shut her down. "Would your parents really let you travel alone?"

For some reason, I thought of Nova on my phone.

"Who said I'm alone?"

Sabrina scoffed.

"I know you. You need me beside you just to walk to the corner store. Who else would go with you?

"Even if your parents are fine with it, my mom..."

Before she could finish, her phone rang.

It was her mother, Mrs. Hayes.

My hearing was poor, and even with my hearing aid I couldn't make out their conversation.

But Sabrina's growing irritation told me enough.

Mrs. Hayes wanted Sabrina to accompany me to Crescent Island.

She could have refused.

Instead, after hanging up, she sighed.

"I guess I really can't get rid of you."

I stood there frozen.

I could understand why Mrs. Hayes felt responsible.

When we were little, my hearing loss hadn't been as severe.

Sabrina had been fooling around with a toy megaphone and shouted my name right beside my ear.

I covered my ears and burst into tears before being rushed to the hospital.

The test results weren't good.

To function normally, I might need a hearing aid for the rest of my life.

My parents never blamed her.

Mrs. Hayes, however, was furious. She punished Sabrina and made her stand in front of me and swear,

"I, Sabrina, promise to take care of Dylan forever, be good to him, and never bully him."

Little Sabrina had cried so hard her shoulders shook. At that age, she couldn't possibly understand what such a promise meant.

Yet to everyone's surprise, she kept it.

From age six to eighteen, she was the person I relied on.

She understood me without my needing to speak.

That was why I had always known that Sabrina probably liked Cameron, at least a little.

It had started about three months before graduation.

Cameron, who had always ranked near the bottom of our class, suddenly began studying seriously.

Sabrina had scoffed while peeling a hard-boiled egg for me.

"He finally regrets wasting his time. Does he really think three months can make up for three years? I can't stand people like that."

She really had disliked Cameron. He was late constantly, skipped classes, and disrupted lessons.

Then one day she bumped into him at the turn of a stairwell.

His practice tests spilled across the floor.

She saw the pages covered in dense notes.

From that day on, the two of them grew closer.

A month before finals, she brought Cameron into what had always been our two-person study group to help him qualify for college.

She began overlooking me.

So it made sense that she wanted to draw a line between us.

After thinking it over, I took a slow breath.

"You don't have to go. I'll explain it to Mrs. Hayes for you."

Sabrina gave a bitter little smile.

She pulled a boarding pass from her pocket.

Then she told Cameron, "I wasn't sure whether I should go with you. Looks like I don't have a choice now."

The two of them exchanged a smile.

I quietly opened Nova and typed, "I think I've become a prop in their flirting game."

"That sounds awful."

From that day forward, Sabrina tried every possible way to apologize. She sent long private messages. She asked Mrs. Hayes to visit and speak for her, bringing up childhood promises and old agreements.Again and again, she promised she would keep her word and care for me for the rest of my life.In the end, I asked Mrs. Hayes to pass along only one sentence."I've grown up. I don't need anyone's care or protection anymore."After that, Sabrina stopped contacting me.Half a month later, I heard the news from a former classmate.Sabrina had ultimately given up Kingsley University and applied to Lakeshore as well. The news stirred nothing inside me.I didn't seek her out or ask why.She was an adult. We had each chosen our own road. That was all. What I did not expect was to receive a message from Molly on the evening before orientation."Lakeshore starts tomorrow. Want me to meet you when you arrive?"My heart immediately sped up.I couldn't think of any reason to refuse.

Early the next morning, Sabrina's mother came to see me.Mrs. Hayes sat on the couch, looking helpless and concerned."Dylan, Sabrina was distracted all day yesterday. She locked herself in her room, refused to eat, and didn't sleep. Even now, she still hasn't submitted her own applications."Did the two of you argue?"You've been close for so many years. Whatever happened, talk it through instead of acting out of anger."I shook my head, my expression calm."Mrs. Hayes, we didn't argue. We simply grew up. I have my own ideas and my own life to choose now. I don't want to remain tied behind someone else as their little shadow."Mrs. Hayes sighed and seemed to understand. After she left, I casually opened my phone and checked my social feed. The first thing I saw was a new post from Cameron. The photograph showed a university in Capital City. The caption was indirect but unmistakable."After all these twists and turns, I'm glad we'll still be in the same city."Anyone could

A few days after I returned home, our final statewide examination scores were released. On the day the results came out, both families gathered at my house for dinner. The table was covered with food, and the atmosphere was warm and lively.Everyone had always assumed that Sabrina and I, childhood friends with similar grades and an old promise between us, would apply to Kingsley University together, continue looking after each other, and attend the same college. At the table, Mrs. Hayes held my hand and smiled affectionately."Dylan, you and Sabrina have talked since childhood about growing up together and attending the same university."Apply to Kingsley as planned. Then you can still look after each other on campus."Sabrina sat nearby and watched me quietly. There was a trace of expectation in her eyes as she waited for my answer. At that moment, Sabrina's phone rang on the table. The caller was Cameron. The instant she answered, her entire face softened with uncontrollab

Molly spent the entire afternoon exploring the beach with me.Before we parted, I asked if she would travel with me for the remaining days of my graduation trip.Evening approached and the sunset faded.I insisted on walking Molly back to her hotel before leaving alone.Once I returned to my room and finally relaxed, I opened my phone and scrolled through my social feed. The first post was one Cameron had just uploaded. The photograph showed him and Sabrina standing together beneath the sunset at the beach. The angle was suggestive and the atmosphere intimate. They looked exceptionally close. The comments were filled with heart emojis and congratulations from our high school classmates. Several people even tagged me to tease me and watch the drama.I stared at the once-painful photograph and felt nothing. The heart that would once have obsessed over it had gradually gone cold.I casually typed, "Best wishes," in the comments, locked my phone, and went to shower. When I fini

"Sabrina."First, I have complete evidence. You can keep covering for him and making excuses if you want. Once we're home, I will still pursue the matter and demand the compensation I'm owed."Second, what gives you the right to decide whether someone else is reliable? A professional, responsible guide who can distinguish right from wrong is far more dependable than someone like you, who ignores the truth and blindly protects an outsider."Third, I don't need to travel with you, and I don't need your pity. Please move. You're blocking the way."After saying all of that, I stopped looking at Sabrina's furious expression.I gently caught Molly by the wrist and turned away.Sabrina called after me, struggling to suppress her anger.I didn't slow down or look back once.Molly said nothing and quietly walked with me along the long shoreline. The ocean breeze brushed over us and gradually eased the resentment that had gathered inside me.After we had walked for a long time, I final

The moment I finished, Cameron acted as though I had deeply wronged him.His eyes reddened and he immediately hid behind Sabrina."Sabrina, I really didn't do it on purpose..."I only wanted to apologize properly, so I barely touched Dylan's hearing aid."How was I supposed to know it would turn out like this?"Without thinking, Sabrina stepped in front of Cameron to protect him.Her brows drew together as she looked at me with undisguised impatience and favoritism."Dylan, can you stop being so aggressive?"It's only a hearing aid. This isn't some enormous disaster."Cameron already apologized. Why do you have to keep attacking him?"He didn't mean it. Can't you be the bigger person for once?"Her blind defense felt like ice water flooding my chest. This was the childhood friend I had known for twelve years. In her eyes, my pain meant nothing beside Cameron's version of events. At that moment, Molly, who had been standing quietly beside me, stepped forward. She took out
