Cairo gave a nod in agreement, and thankfully, he didn’t press the matter any further.

The next day came, and I still wasn’t sure if there had been any improvement in the squirrel's condition from the medicine we had injected. But what mattered most for now was that he was still eating properly.

Later that afternoon, I found myself walking near the part of the forest that bordered the warriors’ den. And once again, I spotted Cairo, kneeling among the trees.

He was feeding the squirrels, just like before. But this time, it wasn’t just squirrels. A few rabbits had come out from the underbrush, cautiously inching closer to him. He reached out, offering them bits of chopped vegetables, and they took them from his hands without fear.

I stood still, watching from a short distance.

Birds flitted through the branches and swooped down, calmly perching on his shoulders. They chirped softly, unbothered by his presence and I know they were already familiar with him.

“Cairo.”
