The emergency stairwell door slammed shut behind Elena.

The sound echoed through the narrow concrete passage, followed almost immediately by another crash from inside the apartment.

They had broken in.

She didn’t dare look back.

Gripping the handrail, she hurried down the stairs as quietly as she could, her handbag bouncing against her side with every step. Her breathing came in short, uneven bursts, but she forced herself to keep moving.

Three flights.

Two.

One.

She was almost at the ground fl

No one spoke after Elena made her decision. The study remained wrapped in silence, broken only by the steady rain tapping against the tall windows. Adrian’s journal lay open on the desk, its pages filled with names, dates, and promises that had cost far too much.Margaret closed the journal gently.“You cannot go.”Elena looked up.“If Adrian is alive, I have no choice.”“You have every choice.”“No.”Her voice was calm now.“For weeks, everyone else has been making decisions for me. Adrian. Damien. Gabriel. Even strangers whose names I barely know.”She slipped Adrian’s wedding ring onto her finger.“This time… I decide.”Margaret’s eyes filled with quiet sorrow.“You sound exactly like him.”Before Elena could answer, Nora’s phone vibrated. She glanced at the screen, and the color drained from her face.“It’s another message.”“From who?” Margaret asked.“The same encrypted number.”Nora opened it.A single photograph appeared.Elena’s breath caught. The image showed a man sitting i

Elena couldn’t take her eyes off the photograph. The little girl smiled with the carefree innocence of someone untouched by betrayal, secrets, or fear. Adrian stood beside her with one hand resting protectively on her shoulder, his smile softer than any Elena had ever seen.It wasn’t the smile of a husband. It wasn’t the smile of a lover. It was the smile of someone protecting the most precious person in his world.Margaret carefully removed the framed photograph from the wall.“Come with me,” she said gently. She led Elena into a quiet study at the back of the estate. The room smelled faintly of old books and polished wood. A fire crackled softly in the fireplace, chasing away the evening chill.Margaret placed the photograph on an antique desk.“You deserve to know who she is.”Elena held her breath.Margaret rested one hand on the frame before speaking.“Her name is Lily.”The name meant nothing to Elena.“I’ve never heard Adrian mention her.”“I know.”“He never hid anything from

Rain followed them out of the city. The windshield wipers swept steadily across the glass, pushing away sheets of water that blurred the empty highway ahead. Elena sat quietly in the passenger seat, Adrian’s wedding ring resting safely inside her palm. Every few seconds, she tightened her fingers around it, as though letting go would somehow erase the fragile hope she had only just found.Neither woman spoke. The silence wasn’t uncomfortable. It was heavy.Heavy with questions neither of them seemed ready to answer. After nearly an hour, Nora turned onto a narrow country road bordered by towering pine trees. The farther they drove, the weaker the phone signal became until Elena’s screen displayed a single word.No Service. She looked out the window.“Where are we?”“Somewhere very few people know exists.”Elena sighed softly.“That sounds familiar.”A faint smile crossed Nora’s face.“I suppose it does.”The road ended before a large iron gate surrounded by stone walls covered in ivy.

The tunnel fell silent.Only the distant groan of collapsing timber and crumbling concrete echoed through the darkness above. Elena stood motionless, her palms pressed against the damp stone wall as she struggled to steady her breathing. Dust still floated through the narrow passage, catching the weak emergency lights that flickered overhead. She forced herself forward.Every instinct screamed at her to turn back.Damien.Gabriel.The old man. They were still inside the burning house. Her chest tightened painfully, but she remembered Adrian’s words from the recording.“Stay alive long enough to learn the truth.”For the first time, she understood that surviving wasn’t an act of selfishness. It was part of the promise. The tunnel sloped gently downward before opening into a rusted steel door. Elena pushed against it with both hands until it gave way with a loud groan.Fresh night air rushed into her lungs. She stepped into what looked like an abandoned warehouse on the edge of the city

The roar of engines outside shattered the uneasy silence.Damien pulled the curtain aside just enough to see the street without exposing himself.Three black SUVs had stopped in front of the house.Men in dark clothing climbed out with practiced precision, spreading across the property as though they had done this countless times before.“They’ve surrounded us,” Damien said quietly. The older man’s shoulders slumped.“I hoped we’d have more time.”Elena clutched the photograph against her chest.“Who are they?”No one answered.Instead, Gabriel burst through the back door, rainwater dripping from his coat as he hurried inside. His breathing was uneven.“They traced one of the vehicles,” he said. His eyes immediately found Elena.“Are you all right?”She nodded.“Barely.”Relief flickered across his face before he turned to Damien.“The rear alley is blocked.”“What about the east side?”“Already covered.”The room fell silent. For the first time since Elena had met them, none of the m

The knock came again.Three slow, deliberate knocks. No louder than before. No more impatient.Damien remained perfectly still, his eyes fixed on the front door. Every trace of warmth disappeared from his expression, replaced by the calm focus of a man who had rehearsed this moment more times than he cared to remember. He turned to Elena.“Take the photograph.”“What?”“The photograph.”She instinctively slipped it into her handbag.“What about you?”“I’ll answer the door.”“No.”The word escaped before she could stop it.“You don’t even know who’s out there.”“I have a suspicion.”His voice remained steady, but his shoulders had visibly tensed.“If I tell you to leave, don’t argue.”“I’m tired of running.”“I know.”His gaze softened for only a moment.“But staying alive is more important than proving you’re brave.”The silence that followed felt endless.Another knock echoed through the house. This time, a familiar voice spoke from outside.“Damien.”Elena frowned. The man sounded c
