Charlotte

"Don't bring me into this."

Nathaniel’s words hung in the air, quiet but sharp enough to cut right through the remaining noise in the ballroom.

I stared at him. This was the man who had kissed my forehead three hours ago in the hotel suite. The man who had spent the last three years talking about our future, our combined portfolios, the children we would send to private schools in Manhattan.

Now, he was looking at me like I was a stranger who had just wandered in from the street.

"Nathaniel," I kept my voice low, desperate to reach the rational part of his brain. "You know I was in Chicago on the fourteenth. We shared a hotel room. We were at the zoning conference together. I could not have initiated a remote transfer from my desktop."

Nathaniel didn't look at me. He looked past my shoulder, scanning the crowd. He was looking at his father, James Crawford, who sat at a VIP table near the front. James gave his son a short, decisive shake of his head.

"The dates don't matter, Charlotte," Nathaniel said. His voice was completely devoid of emotion. He was already doing damage control. "The evidence is on the screen. My father is in this room. Crawford Financial Partners' biggest clients are in this room."

"You know I didn't do this."

"I know that I can't afford to be attached to you right now," he corrected me. He took another step back, increasing the physical space between us so that no one in the room could mistake us for a united front.

He held out his hand, palm up.

"Give it back, Charlotte."

My lungs stopped working. The ballroom was completely silent now. The string quartet had long since packed away their instruments. The elite of New York society were holding their collective breath, watching the golden couple fracture in real time.

"You're doing this here?" I asked. My voice trembled, just once, betraying the crack in my composure. "In front of everyone?"

"It's strictly business," Nathaniel said, his tone perfectly even. "I need the ring."

I didn't argue. If I fought him, if I cried, I would just give them the hysterical woman they wanted to see. I kept my chin high. I reached for my left hand and slid the three-carat emerald-cut diamond off my finger. The metal was warm from my skin, but as I dropped it into Nathaniel’s open palm, my hands felt like ice.

He slipped the ring into his tuxedo pocket without a second glance. He turned his back on me and walked away, melting into the crowd, leaving me entirely alone.

UI turned my attention back to the stage. My father was stepping down from the acrylic podium, flanked by Vanessa and Olivia. They walked toward me. The crowd parted for them, eager to give the Whitmore family the space to handle their dirty laundry.

"Dad," I said as he stopped a few feet away. I forced myself to speak clearly, projecting my voice so the investors nearby could hear me. "This is a mistake. Michael Hayes signed off on my financial reports last week. If you just let me pull my own server logs—"

"Michael came to me this morning," my father interrupted. His voice was cold, carrying the weight of a judge passing a sentence. "He confessed that you pressured him to ignore the discrepancies. He said you threatened his position if he audited the Brooklyn fund."

I looked past my father to the front tables. Michael Hayes was staring down at his untouched dessert plate. He refused to lift his head.

They planned this. All of them. It wasn't just a petty scheme cooked up by Olivia to ruin my night. This was a coordinated effort to frame me. Someone at Whitmore Holdings had stolen eighteen million dollars, and my family had chosen me to take the fall.

"I have spent eight years building the modern portfolio for this company," I said, looking directly into my father's eyes. I searched for a trace of the man who used to teach me how to read blueprints. There was nothing there. Just a CEO looking at a defective asset. "I brought in the Connecticut deal. I secured the Hudson properties. Why would I steal from my own legacy?"

"Because you are greedy, Charlotte," Vanessa said smoothly. She stepped forward, linking her arm through my father’s. "You always want more than your fair share. You couldn't stand the thought that your father might leave a portion of the company to Olivia. You wanted to secure your own fortune before the wedding."

"I don't care about the money," Olivia added. She dabbed at her eyes with a tissue, playing the heartbroken sister to perfection. She took a step closer to me, lowering her voice so only I could hear. "I'll pack your apartment for you, Charlie. I know you'll need time to find a smaller place. Maybe somewhere outside the city."

The sheer audacity of her fake sympathy snapped the last thread of my patience.

"You're a terrible actress, Olivia," I said, my voice dripping with contempt. "You couldn't even balance your own credit card statements without my help. You expect these people to believe you uncovered a complex offshore routing scheme?"

A loud, sharp crack echoed through the ballroom.

My head snapped to the side. A stinging heat exploded across my left cheek.

Vanessa stood in front of me, her hand still raised in the air. She had slapped me. Hard.

Gasps rippled through the crowd. I slowly turned my head back to face her. I could feel the red mark blooming on my skin, but I refused to lift my hand to touch it. I refused to show pain.

"How dare you," Vanessa hissed, her poised exterior slipping to reveal the venom underneath. "After everything this family has given you. You steal from us, you ruin this anniversary, and then you insult my daughter? You are nothing but a thief."

I looked at my father. He stood perfectly still. He didn't reprimand his wife for striking me in front of hundreds of people. He simply adjusted his cuffs.

"Security," my father called out. His voice was loud, echoing off the high ceilings of the Plaza.

Two large men in dark suits stepped out from the shadows near the stage. They moved quickly, closing the distance between us.

"Escort Miss Whitmore off the premises," my father ordered. He looked at me, his eyes entirely flat. "Effective immediately, you are terminated from Whitmore Holdings. And as of tonight, you are no longer a member of this family. I will not let your criminal behavior poison my life's work. Do not contact me. Do not return to the estate."

"Ma'am, please," one of the security guards said, reaching out to grasp my elbow.

I pulled my arm back sharply. "Don't touch me. I know where the exit is."

I turned my back on my father, my stepmother, and the sister who had just stolen my life. I squared my shoulders. I kept my back straight and my head high.

I began the long walk down the center aisle of the ballroom.

The guests stepped back as I approached, treating me like I was contagious. I saw the faces of women I had eaten lunch with, men I had negotiated multi-million dollar contracts alongside. None of them met my eyes. They all looked at the floor, or whispered to the person next to them.

I reached the heavy, ornate doors at the back of the ballroom. As I pushed through them into the quiet, carpeted hallway, I noticed a man leaning against a marble pillar near the coat check.

He wasn't looking at me. He was looking at the massive projection screens still displaying the forged IP logs.

Sebastian Alexander Bennett.

He was the CEO of Bennett Capital Group, and my father's most dangerous rival. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in a dark tailored suit that looked effortlessly expensive. His black hair was swept back, and his sharp, striking features were set in a mask of intense concentration.

While the rest of the room was entirely consumed by the drama and the scandal, Sebastian Bennett was actually reading the evidence.

I watched as he tilted his head, his sharp gray eyes narrowing at the digital credentials on the screen. He muttered something to the man standing beside him—Ethan Brooks, his Chief Operating Officer. Ethan pointed at the routing numbers. Sebastian gave a slow, cynical shake of his head.

He saw it.

Even a man who had spent the last decade trying to dismantle my father's empire could see the glaring holes in the fabricated documents. Sebastian knew a sloppy frame job when he saw one.

As I walked past the pillar, Sebastian shifted his gaze away from the screens and looked directly at me.

For a brief, suspended second, our eyes locked.

There was no pity in his expression. No disgust. No cruel amusement at seeing his rival's daughter publicly ruined. Instead, his gray eyes were assessing, sharp, and intensely focused, taking in my rigid posture, the red mark on my cheek, and the empty space on my left ring finger.

He gave me a single, imperceptible nod. An acknowledgment.

I didn't nod back. I pushed through the heavy doors and walked out into the Plaza lobby.

The air in the lobby felt heavy, but I kept moving. I didn't stop to retrieve my coat or my purse, which were still sitting at Nathaniel's table. I had my phone and my ID in the hidden pocket of my gown, and that was all I needed.

I burst through the front doors of the hotel and stepped out into the New York night.

The weather had turned violent while I was inside. A freezing, torrential rain poured from the black sky, instantly soaking my hair and pasting the dark green fabric of my gown to my skin. The wind whipped down Fifth Avenue, biting through me.

I stood on the pavement, ignoring the valets rushing past with umbrellas.

I was twenty-six years old. I had no job, no fiancé, no family, and no reputation. I had spent my entire life trying to be the perfect, useful daughter, hoping that one day my father would look at me the way he looked at Olivia.

I realized, standing in the freezing rain, that the daughter he wanted never existed. I had wasted years bleeding for a family that viewed me as a disposable asset.

A sleek, black town car pulled up to the curb directly in front of me, its tires splashing water near my heels. The engine hummed quietly in the storm.

The tinted back window smoothly rolled down.

CharlotteThe phone vibrating against my leg felt like a live wire.I stared at the screen, watching Nathaniel’s name flash repeatedly. Two days ago, a call from him would have brought a smile to my face. I would have answered on the first ring, ready to discuss our weekend plans or the guest list for our upcoming wedding. Now, his name just made my chest feel incredibly hollow.I reached down and pressed the red button, sending the call directly to voicemail.Less than ten seconds later, the phone lit up again. Nathaniel Crawford was not a man who enjoyed being ignored. He was used to having his calls answered, his demands met, and his reputation shielded."If you want to answer it, I can ask Ethan to roll up the privacy partition," Sebastian said. He was sitting back against the leather seat, sipping his own coffee. He didn't sound jealous or irritated. He simply offered an option."I have nothing to say to him," I replied, keeping my eyes on the screen. I tapped the contact setting

CharlotteI checked my phone resting on the vanity. The screen was dark, but I knew what was happening online. Since my father leaked the embezzlement story, my name had been dragged through the mud across every financial blog and news network in the city. The narrative was cemented: I was the spoiled, greedy heiress who tried to steal eighteen million dollars from her own family.A sharp knock at the door pulled me out of my thoughts."Come in," I called out.The door opened, and Sebastian stepped into the room. He wore a dark navy suit that fit him flawlessly, paired with a crisp white shirt and a solid gray tie. His dark hair was neatly styled, and his gray eyes swept over me, taking in the white dress and the simple heels."You look ready," he said."I am," I replied, picking up my small clutch from the counter. "Did Jase get the paperwork finalized?""Filed and expedited," Sebastian confirmed. He checked his watch, the silver face catching the morning light. "Judge Harper is wait

CharlotteI stood on the edge of the entryway rug, water dripping from the hem of my ruined green evening gown onto the pristine hardwood floor. I was shivering violently, running purely on adrenaline and the lingering sting of Vanessa’s hand across my cheek."Ethan is bringing up a change of clothes," Sebastian said. He shed his suit jacket, tossing it over the back of a sofa, and began unbuttoning his cuffs. He rolled up his sleeves, revealing strong forearms. "You can’t negotiate in a wet dress.""I'm fine," I said. My voice betrayed me with a slight tremble.Sebastian turned to look at me. His gray eyes swept over my shivering frame, stopping briefly on the red mark still blooming on my face. His jaw tightened just a fraction."You are freezing, Charlotte," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. He pointed down a wide hallway. "First door on the left is a guest suite. Take a hot shower. My attorney is on his way up. We won't start until you are ready."I wanted to argue,

He didn't look at me with the polite, uncomfortable sympathy that the rest of the gala guests had worn."Get in, Miss Whitmore," he said. His voice was deep, steady, and entirely devoid of pity.I stood on the curb, the freezing rain soaking through the thin fabric of my evening gown. My hair clung to my neck. The left side of my face still burned from Vanessa's slap."I don't need a ride," I said, my teeth chattering slightly despite my effort to keep my jaw locked. "I can call a taxi.""With what?" Sebastian asked simply. "Your father fired you five minutes ago. By the time you reach into your pocket, he will have frozen your cards. By midnight, your personal accounts will follow. Richard doesn't leave loose ends."He was right. My father was systematic. He wouldn't just throw me out; he would ensure I had no resources to fight back."Get in," Sebastian repeated, shifting slightly to make room. "Unless you prefer to st

  • Someone Else's Beloved Wife   The Anniversary Gala

The ballroom of the Plaza Hotel buzzed with the quiet, expensive hum of New York's corporate elite. I stood near the edge of the grand staircase, a glass of sparkling water in my hand, running my eyes over the floral arrangements and the lighting setup. Every detail was flawless. I had spent the last six months organizing Whitmore Holdings’ fiftieth-anniversary gala, balancing it on top of my responsibilities as Director of Strategic Development. It was exhausting, but looking around the room, I felt a rare sense of pride. This was my work. My dedication to the family legacy."You need to stop frowning at the centerpieces, Charlotte. People will think you're actually working."I turned to see Nathaniel stepping up beside me. He looked perfectly polished in his tailored tuxedo, his light brown hair styled flawlessly. He offered a charming smile, the kind that made him such an effective vice president at Crawford Financial Partners."I am working, Nathaniel," I replied, smoothing the fa
