Chapter 4

Penulis: Cyberpunk War God
I tried to resist, but Peter still stomped down on my other leg.

The pain caused my mind to white out. Unable to bear with the pain, I fainted.

When I woke up next, I was in the hospital.

The people still surrounded my bed and demanded that I refund them while compensating each of them five thousand dollars. It only made me feel mentally exhausted.

So, I nodded and said calmly, “Fine. From now on, I’ll refund all the people who bought medicine from me before, according to the purchase records. But as for compensation, I will not offer any.”

With that said, I turned away and ignored all of them.

Once I left, I called the drug manufacturing plant, apologized to them, and told them that I did not want to buy any special medicine anymore.

The drug manufacturing plant manager was stunned for a moment before giving me a reminder. “Mr. Zimmerman, you signed a contract with us earlier than most. That’s why you were able to buy the medicine for cheap.

“Right now, this special medicine’s price has increased to an exorbitant amount. If you give up on buying from us, we will terminate your distributorship entirely. You won’t be able to buy the medicine for such a low price anymore.”

As I stared at my cast-covered legs, I said yes resolutely.

After I got slightly better, I started dealing with the refunds.

Some people came with a ton of empty boxes. Judging by the amount, they had bought all their medicine from me over the years.

I quietly refunded these people, just as I had promised.

When I refunded the last sum, I stared at my bank account. Most of my savings were gone at that point.

I sighed.

In the end, I pulled the roller shutter down over my pharmacy with my own two hands and put an end to this short-lived and ridiculous charity work.

Then, I wrote a note on a piece of paper.

[Mercy Pharmacy will be closing down temporarily for reorganization and will reopen in half a month. We welcome everyone to visit by then.]

Upon seeing the notice, the people started spreading the word.

“Look, that scammer is closing down for reorganization!”

“Justice has finally prevailed! It feels great!”

But some people thought that things were off.

“Is he really just reorganizing? He looks like he has shut down the business.”

“Stop guessing. He must have been scared because of us and has admitted defeat. Once he reopens for business, we’ll go and cause a ruckus with Peter again to make him lower the price for the medicine even more!”

Peter grew even more smug.

He uploaded another short video on the short video platform and declared that he had led a group of cancer patients against a scammer and obtained complete victory.

For a time, everyone praised him for being a hero who cared about the people.

He received tons of praise. Some people even wanted to interview him.

As I saw how full of vigor Peter was as he spoke confidently, I just found the whole situation ironic.

I ignored them and just focused on getting my mini market ready for business.

It was actually easy to convert the pharmacy into a mini market. I just put all my remaining funds into renovating the pharmacy and installed standard market shelves before filling them with various daily necessities.

A month later, Daily Life Market was open for business.

The salesperson was my former pharmacist attendant.

Plenty of people visited the mini market, though most of them were just curious visitors.

A lot of them were residents living nearby and came to buy daily necessities.

The next afternoon, Peter brought a group of patients and their families who had finished their special medicine to my place. He strutted over like an arrogant peacock.

He was even saying smugly, “He must have learned his lesson when he reorganized his pharmacy and refunded all of you. Don’t worry, with me around, I’ll definitely make you buy the special medicine at an even cheaper price!”

With that said, he came in with the crowd to buy special medicine.

“Young man, you must be the owner of the pharmacy that was here before, aren’t you?”The old man’s voice was hoarse but gentle. That took me aback, but I still nodded. “That’s me. Do you need something from me, sir?”The old man shook his head and approached me to stare at me with murky eyes. “I’m not here to buy anything. I’m just here to apologize.”I was stunned and stared at him in confusion. “I have an old friend with late-stage lung cancer. He came here to buy medicine from you before. Later on, he also came here to trash your pharmacy.” Regret appeared on his face. “He started regretting his actions after he went back and kept saying that he betrayed you. He passed away last month. Before he left, he held my hand and said that the worst thing he did was to betray you when you were just doing something good out of the kindness of your heart.”I felt something stir in my heart. “He’s stubborn and can’t bring himself to apologize to you. Since I don’t have much longer

I stared at her calmly and said nothing. I had done a kind thing for this woman, yet she betrayed me for two thousand dollars. I just could not summon any desire to talk to her. My silence caused her even greater unease, and an unnatural flush appeared on her cheeks. She nudged her son and whispered, “Quick, greet Mr. Zimmerman.”“Hello, Mr. Zimmerman,” the boy whispered after shivering for a bit. I still said nothing and only stared at her as I waited for her to tell me why she was here. Ruth fisted the hem of her shirt as I continued staring at her. Then, all of a sudden, she started crying. “Mr. Zimmerman, I’m sorry. I really know that I’ve done wrong now. I was blinded by lies and shouldn’t have said those things about you.”While she sobbed, she repeated her apology incoherently. “Did you see the apology video I posted later?”“I did,” I replied calmly. The video was indeed one of the crucial factors behind why public opinion changed later, but that did not chan

When they saw me, the crowd stirred. Peter fell to his knees before me. “Mr. Zimmerman, I’m sorry! I’m a monster and a piece of trash! I was the one who slandered and stirred up the crowd to go against you! I was the one who got them to hit you! It’s all my fault! Please sell the medicine to us again! I’m begging you!”While he spoke, he slapped himself. The sound was clear and crisp. The people behind him fell to their knees as well. Their weeping and pleading rose like waves. “Mr. Zimmerman, we’re sorry!”“We were blind and accused an innocent man of wrongdoing!”“Please give us another chance! We can pay extra!”“Please save us!”As I stared at the kneeling bunch of people and at their sincere regret as well as despair, all I felt was numb calmness. If they had known this would happen, why did they attack me?As I stared at the crowd, my voice traveled into the mini megaphone at the entrance and went out. It was clear and cold. “Stand up, all of you. Kneeling here

[Mr. Zimmerman is a good man. He was doing so much good! We’re all people who can’t afford such expensive medicine, but he gave us a way to live. But he has stopped selling medicine. What are we supposed to do now? Those who denounced him together with Peter Lorde and those who assaulted him, don’t you have a conscience?]Such posts started appearing here and there, though they soon vanished beneath other comments. They still started to change the public’s opinion, though. The fatal blow came from Ruth. The woman who had said that she lost clumps of her hair after taking the medicine I sold uploaded an apology video on a new account at midnight. In the video, she cried until her eyes were swollen and admitted that she had lied because Peter had tempted her into going against her conscience. “Peter had approached me and said that he would give me two thousand dollars if I went online and said that there was something wrong with Mr. Zimmerman’s medicine. “He said that I could

“Also, I need to remind you of something. Look at the symptoms of the cancer patients around you. Are your symptoms similar to theirs right now? If you’re in need of special medicine, go and buy effective, legal, trustworthy medicine.“Perhaps you could beg your victorious hero and see whether he can help you find cheap and useless medicine.”My words struck Peter like invisible swords. They also stabbed into all the patients and their families who had slandered me in the past. Peter opened his mouth, but he could only croak. He could not say a single word. Then, he looked at my cast-covered legs and at the patients who started glaring at him with despair and resentment. Panic he had never felt before rose in his heart. He had won against me by using public opinion. He gained the joy of “punishing” a “scammer.” He had even gained a good reputation. But he had also lost, because he had crushed the hope of patients spending only a little bit of money to buy medicine that cou

But when they were inside, all they saw were shelves filled with snacks, drinks, and laundry detergent. They were stunned. Upon seeing the pharmacy replaced with a mini market, a flash of glee appeared briefly in Peter’s eyes. Then, he pretended to be shocked and covered his mouth as he stared at the supermarket. But the patients and their families looked like they had been petrified. They stood stiffly in place with their mouths hung open as they stared at the mini market in front of them in disbelief. It had everything but the special medicine that kept them alive. “What’s going on? Where’s the medicine? Where’s the pharmacy?”An old woman with graying hair pointed at the mini market’s signboard with a trembling finger. Her voice was filled with anxiety. Peter also pretended to be angry. With a red face, he rushed further into the mini market and looked around fiercely before finally settling his gaze on me while I sat behind the cashier counter and checked my account
