By Wednesday morning, I had officially reached the deeply embarrassing stage of attraction where I started planning outfits around the possibility of accidentally running into someone. Not for him, obviously, for me, because there was absolutely no way I was giving Harmony the satisfaction of being right about this.

Still, after rejecting three shirts and spending far too long fixing my eyeliner, I finally grabbed my bag and headed across campus with a coffee in hand and my dignity hanging by a thread.

Cold air curled around me as I crossed the quad. The sky had finally dumped snow overnight, leaving a thin layer of white dusting the grass and sidewalks. Students shuffled through campus bundled in hoodies and jackets while their breath fogged white in the freezing air.

Somebody cursed loudly after slipping on ice nearby. Laughter immediately followed.

Honestly? Fair.

My phone buzzed in my coat pocket.

Harmony: survive the brooding love interest yet?

Me: if you call him that again i’m blocking you

Harmony: so no then

I rolled my eyes while shoving the phone away. Unfortunately, the second I walked into the humanities building, my pulse betrayed me immediately, because he was there.

Takoda leaned against the wall near the classroom doors, black hoodie pulled over a dark thermal, one hand shoved into his pocket while the other held a coffee cup.

Even surrounded by students, he stood apart somehow; not trying to, he just…did.

The hallway noise blurred slightly as my eyes caught on him. His head lifted almost instantly, and again, I felt that impossible awareness.

The second his gaze landed on me, something low in my stomach tightened hard enough to make me angry about it.

Ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous.

For half a second neither of us moved, then his eyes narrowed slightly. Not hostile, but definitely focused, as if he noticed everything all at once; the cold on my cheeks. The coffee in my hand. The fact I nearly stumbled because I was too busy staring at him.

Fantastic.

I recovered quickly, straightening my shoulders before walking toward the classroom like my nervous system wasn’t actively humiliating me.

“You’re staring,” I informed him as I approached.

His gaze stayed on me another second before dropping briefly toward the coffee cup in my hand.

He shrugged. “So are you.”

“I feel like you’re enjoying this more than you should,” I muttered.

Something almost resembling amusement touched the corner of his mouth, it disappeared fast enough I almost thought I imagined it.

“You always talk this much?” he asked.

“You always answer questions with more questions?” I shot back.

His eyes held mine for one long beat, then, “Yes.”

I hated the way that tiny answer made warmth spread through my chest.

Students brushed past us toward the classroom doors while tension curled quietly in the space between us.

Takoda stepped aside slightly to let a group through, instinctively positioning himself where he could still see both the hallway and the stairwell behind us.

I noticed before I could stop myself.

“What happened to your hand?” The question slipped out before I could reconsider it.

His gaze dropped briefly toward the healing scrape across his knuckles. “Nothing.”

“Wow,” I deadpanned. “Very believable.”

A muscle shifted in his jaw, and for one second, I thought he might walk away entirely. Instead, he looked back at me and exhaled slowly through his nose. “You ask questions like you expect people to answer them honestly.”

I tipped my head sideways, stating, “I usually do.”

“That’s dangerous,” he stated.

There it was again, not drama, nor flirting, instead it felt like warning.

The strange thing was how little it pushed me away. If anything, it pulled me closer.

Which probably meant I needed professional help.

Before I could respond, loud laughter echoed down the hallway behind me.

Instinctively, I turned toward the sound. A guy from one of my literature classes walked past with two friends before slowing slightly when he noticed me. “Analiese,” he greeted with an easy grin. “You survive Smith’s reading assignment?”

“Barely,” I declared.

He laughed. “I knew it. Half that translation looked like somebody spilled alphabet soup across the page.”

I smiled despite myself while he kept talking, beside me, Takoda went completely still. Not visibly tense, worse; disciplined as all hell.

The change was subtle enough most people wouldn’t have noticed it, but I did.

His attention fixed hard on the guy standing a little too close to me now. Not jealousy exactly. Assessment.

Predatory awareness flickered briefly behind his eyes before disappearing beneath restraint again, and he realization sent heat crawling unexpectedly through me.

The literature guy finally nodded toward the classroom. “See you inside.”

“Yeah,” I replied softly.

The second he walked away, silence settled between me and Takoda again, then, “You know him?” The question came low and flat.

I blinked once. “Uh…sort of?”

His gaze remained fixed down the hallway where the guy disappeared.

Awareness tightened my chest. “You didn’t like him,” I observed carefully.

Takoda finally looked at me again. “I don’t know him.”

“That’s not what I said,” I corrected.

A long pause stretched between us, then he stepped closer, not enough to touch me, but enough that warmth rolled off him through the cold hallway air, and my heartbeat immediately betrayed me.

“You should go inside, Analiese.” His voice emerged low, regimented, but beneath it, tension coiled tightly enough I could practically feel it.

I swallowed once. “Are you always this intense?”

His eyes dropped briefly to my mouth before lifting again. “Yes.”

The honesty of it hit harder than flirting would have. For one impossible second neither of us moved. The hallway noise faded strangely around the edges while my pulse hammered hard enough I could feel it in my throat.

His gaze stayed fixed on mine with a focus that made my skin feel too tight.

Not hungry, but restrained, which somehow felt worse.

“What?” I questioned quietly before I could stop myself.

Something unreadable crossed his face before disappearing almost instantly. “Nothing.”

“Liar,” I accused.

That almost-smile ghosted briefly across his mouth again. Tiny, barely there, but enough to send warmth unfurling low in my stomach.

God.

Harmony was never going to let me live this down.

Suddenly Professor Smith’s voice carried from inside the classroom. “If you’re loitering dramatically in my hallway, at least have the decency to do it quietly.”

Heat flooded my face instantly.

Takoda stepped back first, not embarrassed, simply regimented again.

Meanwhile, I wanted the floor to crack open and swallow me whole.

“Fantastic,” I muttered under my breath.

Takoda’s gaze flicked toward me again. “You embarrass easily for someone who talks this much.”

I stared at him. “Was that a joke?”

One shoulder lifted slightly beneath his hoodie. Not confirmation or denial.

After another serious glance in my direction, and without another word, he turned and walked into the lecture hall.

~Analiese~The massive cedar doors of the Council Hall groaned closed behind my back. The explosive, iron thud rolled through the subterranean passages of the mountain, sending a vibration rattling through the soles of my shoes before it completely dissolved into the granite walls.Nobody spoke.Rowan adjusted the leather strap of his rifle, maintaining his station directly parallel to my shoulder. He didn't march three paces ahead like a captor, and he didn't drag his boots three paces behind like a shadow; he walked right beside me. Two Crown Enforcers followed exactly four steps back, the heavy steel of their tactical boots striking the flagstones in the exact same rhythmic, militaristic meter as Rowan's. No living soul reached out to clamp a hand over my wrist, and no one shoved my shoulder to hurry my pace. Somewhere beyond those sealed cedar panels, the high tribunal was still continuing its relentless, clinical march.I refused to look back over my shoulder. I knew with absolut

I didn't move a single muscle, anchoring my weight firmly to the raised stone dais. I remained exactly where the Crown required my boots to stand because I knew, with absolute, terrifying certainty, that if my feet took a single step after her, I would never stop walking. The massive cedar doors groaned open at the rear of the Council Hall, letting in a sudden rush of cold mountain air. Analiese crossed the heavy timber threshold without looking back over her shoulder. Not once. Rowan followed half a pace behind her left shoulder, his hand resting flat on the grip of his sidearm. The Crown Enforcers fell into a tight flanking position behind them without a single verbal command. The doors slammed shut. The blunt impact rolled through the high-ceilinged chamber like the final, echoing note of a funeral bell. Then, an absolute silence rushed into the room. It wasn't the heavy silence of collective respect, and it wasn't the careful silence of fear. It was the vast, hollow quiet left beh

~Takoda~Not a single wolf in the chamber moved.Analiese stood exactly one step beyond the historic Dawson line. The carved stone vine disappeared entirely beneath the heavy rubber toe of her boot. She hadn't noticed the transgression, her focus pinned entirely on the dais.I had noticed. So had every single Territory Alpha seated within the tiered benches of the Council Hall. The pressure of the silence shifted. It no longer belonged to the formal procedures of the Hearing; it belonged to the volatile suffocating weight of waiting. They were waiting for the response of the Crown. They were waiting for me.Inside my chest, my wolf pressed heavily against the steel restraints I had spent ten agonizing winters learning to master. It wasn't thrashing because she had publicly challenged my authority before forty sovereign rulers; it was coiling tightly because she had looked at my face the exact way she used to. She looked at me as if she still expected to find Takoda Blackwell. She expe

The assembly room became impossibly still. Nobody spoke. Nobody shifted. Even the fire crackling inside the massive stone hearths seemed to settle into the silence, the flames flattening out against the blackened masonry. Forty Territory Alphas sat beneath the towering cedar rafters, their attention fixed on me. One by one, I watched the argument reach them, not as leaders, but as fathers. My words had forced every wolf in the chamber to picture his own daughter standing inside the accused circle where Trin now stood.Good. I wanted that image to haunt every one of them.Abram Carter's expression hardened again, every trace of uncertainty freezing beneath decades of practiced authority as he gripped his cane. "The unified law is not written differently for the blood of daughters, Dawson.""No," I answered quietly, refusing to break eye contact. "It isn't." I let the silence stretch between us, holding his amber gaze until his chest rose with a heavy breath. "But fathers are."The word

~Analiese~Nobody answered Abram. Not immediately. Every territory Alpha remained pinned to their tiered cedar benches, their hardened features carved from decades of ruthless leadership. Some fixed their stares on his old frame, while others parsed Trin’s face. Several turned their heads to track me. Good, and I wanted every eye in the house on my position.Abram rested both of his leather-gloved hands across the carved wolf's head of his cane before opening his mouth again. “The law exists precisely because human emotion is fundamentally unreliable,” he stated, his gravelly voice echoing off the high stone arches. He dragged his gray eyes slowly around the perimeter of the Council Hall. “Every single wolf sitting in this room has buried someone they loved.”A dense, freezing quiet settled over the benches.“A mate,” Abram enumerated, his voice dropping into a dark cadence. “A parent. A child. A brother. A sister.”Not a single soul drew a full breath.“If we allow personal grief to

~Takoda~The chamber remained frozen in a state of absolute, dead silence. Forty Territory Alphas sat like granite blocks on their tiered wooden benches, while forty Betas stood like iron columns along the masonry walls. The Elders sat with their hands flat against their laps, and the Gammas hovered over their tables, their quills poised to scratch the transcript into their ledgers. The accused stood isolated in her circle, while the sole representative of the Dawson bloodline remained unyielding at the center line.Every single wolf in the cavernous room waited for the Crown to break the stalemate.I rested my open palm against the cold, worn calfskin covering the Book of Law. The brittle parchment pages beneath my fingertips had outlived every Alpha King who had ever occupied the high seat before me. They had survived my father, and they had survived his father before him. Every single judgment ever rendered inside this mountain had originated from the exact stone slab where my boot

I followed Takoda into the lecture hall with my coffee still warm in my hand, and my dignity somewhere behind me in the hallway; probably dead beneath Professor Smith’s judgment.Taking my usual seat halfway up the room, I set my bag down and tried very hard not to look toward the back row. Tsking her tongue, Harmony walked away and was back minutes later, sliding a glass of coke toward me before leaning both elbows onto the counter.“Start talking,” she demanded.I took a long drink first, mostly to buy myself a second to think, because trying to explain Takoda Blackwell out loud sud

As I stared after him, trying to decide whether Takoda Blackwell was rude, damaged, dangerous, or some deeply unfair combination of all three, he disappeared into the hallway without another glance.I stayed exactly where I was for a second too long.My pulse still hadn’t settled, which was ridicul

I tried hard to act like my nervous system hadn’t just short-circuited over a guy sitting quietly in the back row as I pulled out my notebook and uncapped my pen.The lecture hall buzzed around me, and someone argued two rows down about whether mythology counted as historical evidence.
