Chapter 2

Author: Fierce Sleeping Dog
The woman in the gaudy short skirt flushed an angry shade of red right before my eyes.

"What the hell did you just say?!"

She let out a furious roar and lunged at me, grabbing a fistful of my collar.

"Got a sharp tongue, don't you? Do you even know who I am? How dare you talk to me like that?"

She shoved me hard against the red sports car, my back slamming into the cold metal.

Instead of getting angry, I laughed. "First, I have zero interest in who you are. Second, this is a lawful society, and what you're doing right now counts as assault."

But she burst into crazed laughter.

"I'm Lily Jenkins, and here in Grebour City, I am the law!"

I stared at her, speechless. Someone had clearly read too many melodramatic novels.

Still, the name Lily Jenkins did ring a faint bell.

My silence only seemed to fuel her arrogance. She pointed to a tiny speck of dirt on the car's hood, her smile twisting into something vicious.

"Scared now? Good. Then use your tongue and lick this spot clean. Maybe—maybe—if I'm in a good mood, I won't hold this against you."

The crowd erupted into poorly stifled laughter.

"Now this is going to be a show!"

"A poor girl going head-to-head with a rich heiress—amazing!"

"Hurry and record it. Post it online—this might go viral."

Even the auto shop salespeople didn't intervene. Instead, they whispered among themselves, eyes full of mockery and disdain.

To them, it was obvious who deserved to be trampled—the rich girl stepping out of a multi-million-dollar sports car, or the plainly dressed girl in faded clothes.

Seeing me stare at her expressionlessly only inflated Lily's vanity further. She leaned close to my ear, lowering her voice in what she thought was triumphant whispering.

"Wendy Penzo, Chairman of the Penzo Group—ever heard of her? She's my future mother-in-law. Grebour City's Penzo family. Ring any bells?

"If you offend me, you offend the entire Penzo family. Get on your knees and lick my car clean, and maybe I'll let you go."

Wendy Penzo… wasn't that my mother-in-law? She was the mother of my husband, Leo Penzo—the man I had been married to for three years.

And now I remembered: Lily was the "girl next door" he often mentioned. He once said I couldn't compare to even half a finger of hers. I never expected this was the face behind those words.

Expression blank, I lifted my hand and pushed away the grip she had clamped on my shoulder.

"I've never heard that Wendy had a daughter-in-law like you."

Her gaze darted around, panic flashing in her eyes.

Then I pulled out my phone and dialed a number in full view of everyone.

"I should ask her son, Leo Penzo, whether he recognizes you as his wife."

The call connected; background noise filtered through the receiver.

I spoke into the phone, my voice calm and devoid of emotion.

"Honey. I heard your mother went behind my back and found you a new wife?"

You bitch! I came here to kill you! Didn't expect it, did you?! How could I have missed! I missed!"So her target… had always been me.She hated that I had destroyed her family, hated that I had driven her into ruin. She was willing to pay any price to drag me down with her—no matter what it cost.Leo was nothing more than a pitiful casualty in her frenzy for revenge. At the hospital, the light above the emergency room stayed on for what felt like an eternity.Leo's parents rushed in. In a single night, they

I stormed out of the banquet hall, so furious I even forgot to grab my coat. The cool night breeze brushed against my skin, easing the tight knot of irritation in my chest just a little.Carmen had already arranged the car and was waiting at the entrance.I strode toward it, wanting nothing more than to escape this wretched place at once. But just as I pulled the door open, ready to get in, a figure suddenly lunged out from the shadows nearby and clamped down on my arm.It was Leo.I had no idea when he'd chased after me. His hair was a mess, his shirt wrinkled—he looked completely unhinged."Samantha! Don't go!"He grabbed me with everything he had, his nails digging so deep into my flesh that it hurt."Listen to me! It's not what you think! I just love you too much! I can't live without you!"His cracked, desperate shouting drew the attention of the security guards and several guests lingering by the doors.Humiliation and disgust washed over me."Let go!"I yanked hard,

The night before I left Grebour City, several of its top business tycoons organized a farewell banquet for me.Halfway through the event, I stepped onto the terrace with a glass of wine to get some air. Carmen approached, her expression strangely tense."Samantha… Leo is here."My brows pulled together. "How did he get in?"At an event of this level, security was airtight, and invitations were strictly tied to real names.Carmen sighed. "He begged an old family friend of the Penzos to use their invitation slot. The security guards just realized it. Do you want me to have someone escort him out?"I shook my head. "Forget it. Let him be. I don't want tonight turning into a spectacle."I thought he only wanted to see me from a distance. I underestimated how shameless he could be.When I left the terrace and returned to the banquet hall, a waiter "accidentally" spilled an entire glass of red wine down the front of my suit jacket.I took off my jacket and headed for the lounge to

One month later, my personal attorney placed two copies of the divorce agreement neatly on my desk, his posture respectful and solemn.Leo came alone. He had grown noticeably thinner. The once-handsome contours of his face carried a sickly pallor, his eyes swollen and red. He wore a simple, pale shirt—the style I used to love seeing on him."Samantha."The moment he walked in, he called my name in that hoarse, trembling voice I once found irresistible.I sat at the head of the table, my expression unreadable. I pointed to the chair across from me."Have a seat, Mr. Penzo. Time is precious. Once you sign, our ties are severed."The words "Mr. Penzo" cut into him like a blade. His body swayed, his face draining of color. The lawyer slid the two documents toward him.He didn't look at the contents. His eyes stayed locked on me."Samantha… must you be this heartless? Three years of marriage—doesn't any of it mean something to you?"I know I was wrong, I really do! Please… give

Leo had long since lost his senses. "No… I don't want a divorce…" he murmured, his voice hollow and broken.Regret tore through him—regret that he hadn't stepped forward to defend me when it mattered.Wendy's entire body trembled violently. More than anyone else, she understood exactly what my words meant.Like a madwoman, she lurched toward my car, trying to grab the window—trying to seize the last strand of hope slipping through her fingers."Samantha! I was wrong! It was my fault! Please—give me another chance!"But she barely took two steps before the bodyguards behind me reacted instantly. The wall of black-suited men blocked her.At that moment, Leo finally snapped out of his shock. He stumbled to my window, crying, panic twisting his face."Samantha… I'm sorry… please don't leave me…"His voice broke, every word a trembling mess."My mom… she didn't mean it… I… I just…"I looked at him quietly. I looked at the face I had once loved so deeply. Now, the tears on that fa
