Chapter 3

Author: Lyra
Three days after they took my door away, the academy held a meeting for parents.

Mom arrived half an hour early.

The moment my teacher brought up the students' mental health, she raised her hand.

“That's exactly what I wanted to talk about.”

She took the report out of her bag.

“My daughter said she had depression recently too. I took her for an assessment. They found nothing wrong.”

The classroom was full of parents.

Mom grew more worked up as she spoke.

“Everything online tells children to label themselves. Fail a potions exam, and it's anxiety. Don't want to do physical training, and it's depression. If parents are a little strict, we're hurting them.”

“They're not even adults yet. Their wolves haven't awakened. This is when they need us to guide them.”

“We can't let them think they're sick until they're too scared to do things they already know how to do.”

Several parents kept nodding.

Someone asked, “How is Charlotte now?”

Mom smiled at me. I was standing at the back of the room.

“Much better. Come here, sweetheart. Tell everyone yourself.”

Everyone turned to look at me.

I walked to the front.

Mom put the report in my hand and held my shoulder.

“Don't be scared. I'm right here.”

My grip creased the paper. I forced a smile.

“I was overthinking things before. I caused trouble for my mom and my teachers. I understand now. I'll work hard in class and keep up with training.”

The room filled with applause.

One parent said to Mom, “We'd expect nothing less from our Luna. You certainly know how to raise a child.”

Mom beamed.

“I just want her to be able to stand on her own one day.”

When I walked into class the next morning, a few boys in the back copied my voice.

“I'm not sick. I was just overthinking.”

Someone had written “Normal range” on the board.

Next to it was a crying face. Underneath, they'd written:

Our Crybaby Heir.

The whole class was laughing.

During physical training that afternoon, our instructor had us run laps around the field.

On the second lap, my heart started racing again.

My chest felt heavy and tight. Every breath hurt.

Someone behind me shouted, “Our future leader's having another episode!”

Another voice answered with a laugh.

“Don't be stupid. She's got a report. She's perfectly fine.”

I didn't stop.

When I reached the finish, I fell.

I scraped my knee, and blood ran down my shin.

Our instructor told me to sit out and rest.

At the edge of the field, my heart finally slowed a little.

I thought that meant I was getting better.

After school, Mom saw my knee and crouched down right away.

“What happened?”

“I fell while running.”

She frowned hard.

“Your instructor said you nearly fainted. Do you still feel sick?”

“Not anymore.”

“Were you nervous again?”

“No.” I looked at her. “I just didn't eat breakfast.”

Her face relaxed.

“There you go.”

“If your body's not feeling well, look for a physical reason. Don't blame everything on your mental health.”

At dinner, she filled my plate with roast chicken and potatoes.

“Finish it. You're still growing. How will you keep up with training if you don't eat?”

I swallowed one bite after another.

By the end, my stomach was churning.

That night, I threw up in bed.

I didn't dare make a sound.

I had no door. Mom could walk past at any moment.

I rolled up the dirty duvet cover, shoved it under my desk, and hid it beneath my academy uniform.

In the living room, Mom was on the phone with my aunt.

She sounded so happy.

“Charlotte fell during training today, but she still made it to the finish.”

“Of course it hurt to see her injured. But she's finally sticking with it. I knew my daughter wasn't that fragile.”

“I've checked on her several times a night lately. She's always sleeping quietly. She's eating again too.”

I covered my mouth and swallowed the acid rising in my throat.

I sat across from her.I'd sat beside her during the assessment, too. She'd been so close. All she'd had to do was look up to see me.But she'd kept her eyes on the form and changed my answers, one by one.Now she'd finally gotten them right. It was just too late.Later, Mom deleted every video. She wrote a long message to the parent group. She admitted she'd changed my answers on the form. She admitted she'd led me through every word I said in the video. She also admitted that her belief that “only Omegas get this illness” was nothing more than prejudice. My Alpha blood hadn't made it hurt any less. She gave her written account to the academy and the head of the pack's medical team. She stopped using the report marked “Normal range” to defend herself. Some people tried to comfort her. They said she'd only gone about parenting the wrong way. She shouldn't take all the blame. My aunt called and begged her to stop torturing herself.Mom only answered in a flat voice,“If she could come b

My funeral was three days later.Mom didn't dress me in the white dress she'd picked out.It was her favorite style. She'd always made me wear it to formal pack dinners. An heir had to look the part, she'd say. I couldn't live in baggy hoodies. This time, she found my favorite black hoodie at the bottom of my closet. It was too big. She'd never let me wear it in company.“Stand up straight, sweetheart. You'll be leading these people one day.”Now she held it to her chest and told the funeral home staff through her tears,“Put her in this. She likes it.”A lot of people came to the funeral. My aunt, my uncle, my academy teacher, and the classmates who'd called me the Crybaby Heir. They stood before my photograph with their heads down. No one dared look at Mom.My teacher brought a stack of letters. “The class wrote these for Charlotte.”Mom didn't take them. “Why didn't they write to her when she was alive?”My teacher went pale. “We never thought it would get this bad.”“She threw up d

Mom wouldn't let go of my hand. When the nurse told her it was time to take me to the morgue, she stood in front of the bed and refused to move.“She gets cold. You can't take her there.”“She's only asleep. If I talk to her a little longer, she'll wake up.”She pulled up my blanket and smoothed my hair with her fingers, just as she used to before taking me to the academy.“Charlotte, there's no training today.”“Sleep as long as you want. I won't wake you.”Dad tried to hold her, but she looked up.“Why didn't we take her for more tests?”“She kept throwing up. She nearly fainted during training. Why did we only ever tell her to keep going?”Dad lowered his head. His tears fell to the floor.“We thought we were doing what was best for her.”Mom went still. She'd said those words so many times. They'd been a shield. No matter how much I fought her, she could hide behind them and believe she was right. Now Dad had said them back to her, and they offered no comfort at all.“What was best

Mom's hands went still. She stared at those two lines as if she could no longer read them.“Charlotte...”She turned the envelope over. Her lips moved as she looked at the words, “To my mom, who loves me more than anyone.”No one answered her.I stood beside her as she read on.Mom, I know you love me.You cook for me every day. You drive me to the academy and back. You spend all your time on me.When I get hurt in training, you treat my wounds and stay beside me all night. So whenever I feel bad, I feel like I'm a bad person, too. You're so good to me. What right do I have to be unhappy?Mom's lips trembled. She touched my name on the page, and tears began to fall. But Mom, your love makes me afraid to tell you I'm hurting. When I say I can't sleep, you tell me to stop overthinking, close my eyes, and I'll fall asleep. When I say I don't want to go to the academy, you tell me I have to live up to my bloodline. I can't back down just because something is hard. When I say I can't breath

Mom was still holding my hand when the ambulance arrived.“She was fine just a little while ago. She had two helpings at dinner yesterday.”“She's just exhausted, isn't she? Please save her.”She spoke in a rush, as if a nod from the doctor would be enough to make me open my eyes on the stretcher. At the hospital, they rushed me into a resuscitation room. But I'd already left my body. I was a ghost now, following Mom.I said softly, “Mom, I wasn't lying.”She couldn't hear me. She'd never really heard me when I was alive, either. The first time I couldn't breathe at the academy, I hid in the bathroom and called her.“Mom, I feel like I'm dying. Can you come get me?”She came right away. She held me and kept rubbing my back. But once she heard I wasn't injured and had only started feeling sick during an exam, she took my hand and led me back to the training field.“I'll be right outside. You can do this.”After that, whenever my heart raced, my first thought wasn't to ask for help. It w

The next day, Mom set up her phone in the living room. She brought over two chairs and had me sit beside her. Before she started filming, she brushed my hair and gently put balm on my cracked lips.“Smile, sweetheart.”I pulled up the corners of my mouth.“Like this?”“A little more natural. The way you used to.”She started recording and smiled easily at the camera.“A lot of parents have asked me what to do when their children keep saying they're depressed.”“Of course we need to care for them and get them checked. But just because they say they can't do something doesn't mean we should believe they can't.”She held the report up to the camera.“My daughter went through this too. I took her to the clinic. There was nothing wrong.”“She has Alpha blood. She has the ability, and she has responsibilities. Our job is to be there for her and teach her to face difficult things.”She turned the camera toward me.Under the table, Mom nudged my leg.“Charlotte, tell everyone. Are you better n
