Chapter 3 The Pressure to Back Down

Autor: Perfect Timing
Julian's expression didn't change at Lucian's sharp tone. "I only believe the evidence when I see it."

That single sentence made the autopsy room even quieter.

Lucian stared at him for several seconds before suddenly curling his lips into a smile. "Fine. Since you're all so determined, feel free to send it to the lab."

He put his glasses back on before turning his gaze to me. "But, Summer, allow me to remind you that forensic pathology isn't a detective novel. Corpses don't cooperate with your imagination."

I lowered my head.

Sherry whispered in my ear, "Thank you."

Her voice was so soft that it felt like a breeze on the verge of fading away.

The expedited DNA test would take time. Still, Julian ordered the evidence sealed again and put the case on hold.

I helped one of the assistants clean up the autopsy room, but I couldn't shake the uneasiness coiling in my chest.

Sherry had said her killer was in this autopsy room. However, the only people present had been me, Lucian, Julian, two assistant medical examiners, and a records clerk.

Julian was the captain of the Criminal Investigation Division. The two assistants had been in my sight the entire time, and the records clerk was a female officer.

So, who was the "he" Sherry had been talking about?

My eyes drifted to Lucian before I even realized I was doing it.

He was washing his hands. Water streamed over his fingertips, carrying away the faint traces of blood.

Perhaps he sensed me watching because he suddenly looked up at me through the mirror.

My heart lurched.

Lucian smiled. "Summer."

"Yes?"

"Come to my office after work."

His voice was gentle. Yet, it managed to send a forbidding chill down my spine for some reason.

Only the duty lights remained on in the forensic center by the time it was 7 p.m..

I knocked on Lucian's office door.

"Come in."

The main lights were off, and there was only a desk lamp casting a pool of light across the room. Lucian sat behind his desk with my internship file sitting beside him. He didn't ask me to sit.

"You had excellent grades in college."

I stood by the door, saying nothing.

"You were the top of your class, got a perfect score in anatomy, and your professor wrote you an outstanding recommendation."

He flipped through the file, his tone calm. "It's just a pity that you're too impatient."

I pressed my lips together. "Mr. Vance, I wasn't trying to show off."

"I know." He looked up at me. "You were trying to prove yourself."

I froze at the insult.

He closed the file. "We get interns like you here every single year. You're all smart, perceptive, and more importantly, ambitious. They all thought they were going to change the world, just like you are doing so now.

"But you're no longer in a classroom. Every word written by a medical examiner can change the direction of a case. Every conclusion affects both the living and the dead."

He sounded so righteous.

If Sherry's voice hadn't still been echoing in my head, I might have believed that I'd made a terrible blunder.

Lucian stood and approached me. "I can let today's incident go."

I looked up at him.

His tone softened as he continued, "Tomorrow, write a statement admitting your lack of experience and that you mistakenly identified contamination as skin tissue. Withdraw your request for a second examination, and I won't let this affect your internship evaluation."

I finally understood why he'd called me here. He wanted to pressure me into backing down.

"But the sample's already been sent to the lab."

Lucian smiled. "It can still be withdrawn."

"Why should I do what you want?"

Silence filled the office for two long seconds.

The smile slowly faded from Lucian's face. "Summer, don't back yourself into a corner."

It sounded ominous considering how my back was currently pressed against the door, and my palms were already damp with sweat.

Just then, a muffled voice suddenly drifted from the storage cabinet in the corner of the office.

Hank was taken to the police department that same night. My phone's screen was shattered from the fall, but the recording was still intact. Every word he had spoken on the rooftop was crystal clear.Sherry's case was finally blown wide open.Hank had abused his position as a doctor to target women who lived alone, cherry-picking victims who suffered from insomnia, anxiety, or had little family support. He earned their trust under the guise of treatment. Then, he used medication to control them before staging their deaths as suicides or accidents.Sherry had not been his first victim.Following his confession and tracing the flow of the drugs, the police uncovered five more suspicious deaths. In three of those cases, the original forensic examiner had been none other than Lucian himself.…Lucian was called in for questioning the next morning.Julian brought me to the observation room.I saw Lucian sitting in the interrogation room through the one-way glass. I froze in disbelief. "You killed her just because of that?""She was obviously exhausted. Lonely. She needed someone to take care of her." Hank's voice grew increasingly twisted and erratic. "I prescribed her medication. I kept her company. I told her she could depend on me. And what did she do?"She said I'd crossed the line. She said she'd report me. She even said she didn't like me."He stared at me, his eyes as cold and sinister as a snake's. "How could she not like me?"My fingers clenched tightly around my phone as I forced myself to keep my anger in check. "So, you killed her and staged it as a suicide."Hank curled his lips into a faint smile. "I simply made the choice for her. She was fully conscious when her wrist was slit. The muscle relaxant didn't knock her out. It only kept her from moving. "She watched her own blood drain into the water, and there wasn't a thing she could do. She couldn't even call for help."My mind went blank at his description.Sherry's sobb

There was no name attached.I stared at the text for a long time, my palms turning clammy. Every cell in my body screamed at me to see sense and not put myself in danger.Just then, Sherry's voice echoed in my head. "That building. I saw him there."I called Julian. No answer. I sent him another message, attaching a screenshot of the text. Still nothing. In the end, I found myself standing outside the old inpatient building at City General Hospital at 10:40 p.m. that night. The building had been abandoned, and every dark window looked like a face with empty eye sockets.A gust of wind blew past me, and the entrance door creaked open.I took a fortifying breath, turned on the voice recorder on my phone, and walked inside. The air reeked of disinfectant mixed with mildew despite its desolate state. The higher I climbed, the clearer Sherry's voice became. "I've been here before. He said he could cure my insomnia. He said all I had to do was go to sleep."The rooftop door was hal

Lucian stood in the doorway. "How far has the investigation gotten?"Julian turned off the projector. "The case is still under investigation. I'm not at liberty to discuss it."Lucian smiled. "You're now keeping secrets from me too, Captain Slate?"Julian didn't answer.Lucian's gaze drifted past him and landed on me. "Summer, the director wants to see you."My heart sank. The atmosphere in the director's office was even heavier than I'd expected.Jack Miller, the director of the forensic center, was in his 50s. He was usually kind to interns. However, there was a formal complaint sitting on his desk today."Summer, someone has filed a complaint under their real name, accusing you of improperly interfering with the forensic process in the Sherry Mann case and influencing the homicide unit to change the direction of its investigation."My mind went blank. "I didn't."Jack sighed. "I know the accusation may not hold up, but you did bypass protocol to request a second examinati

  • Speak for the Silent   Chapter 6 The Needle in the Drain

Although Sherry's case had been reopened, the killer was nowhere close to being found. Julian led the team back to the apartment for another search. As the forensic assistant, I went with them.Sherry's apartment was on the sixth floor of an old building with no elevator. The place was small but spotless. There was a faint smell of disinfectant lingering in the bathroom even after all this time.Sherry's voice drifted into my ear, broken and shaky. "He came here often. He said he was helping me. I thought he was a good person."I asked, "Who was he?"She fell silent for a long time before finally saying, "I couldn't see him clearly. The light was out that night, and he was wearing a mask. But I remember how he smelled. It was sterile like… like a hospital."I stood in the bathroom doorway, my eyes scanning the grout lines between the tiles.Julian was examining the door lock. "There are no signs of forced entry. Either the killer had a key, or the victim let him in.""It coul
