CASSIAN

I felt a sharp pain in my heart as my mate disappeared, and forced it away. I was worried for her and I was scared, but that wouldn't help me or her now. I need to be focused on the present.

After the spell, Saoirse was pale as she walked to the edge of the wards.

"Are you alright?" I asked her.

She shook her head. "Just running a bit low on power. I'll renew the wards, but if the other witch is strong enough, it won't make much of a difference. They'll fall soon."

I nodded. I'd been

CASSIAN "Are you ready?" Max asked. "The hall is filled up. Looks like every single person in the pack is here. And a few ass-kissers from Red Moon.""Better don't call them ass-kissers to their faces," I sent back, wiping the sweat from my hands for what felt like the hundredth time. Max was mindlinking me from the Great Hall downstairs, while I waited for Iris to emerge from the bedroom. She, Saoirse, and Lily had been in there for almost four hours now, and occasionally I'd hear them giggling at some pretty outrageous stories. Tonight was the night of the Luna ceremony, so Iris had chosen to get ready in the Alpha suite above the pack house just so she wouldn't have to make the long walk from the alpha house to the pack house."I'll try not to," Max was saying, "but you know me. They'll probably read my distrust for them on my face.""Mmhmm."He was silent for a while, then, "Are you nervous?" "No. Why would I be nervous." Max laughed. "Maybe because today is an important day

In the history of Luna ceremonies, probably none had been planned as fast as mine was. Only a week had passed since Cassian made the announcement, and everything was already set. The formalities of the ceremony would happen in the Silver Creek pack house, and the reception afterwards would be held at a point halfway between Silver Creek and Red Moon to make it easier for people from both packs to attend. The little bit of no man's land in between Silver Creek and Red Moon had been incorporated into both packs, making them seem like one very large pack with two names. That would change on the night of the ceremony though — which was tomorrow. I was with Saoirse and Lily, at what was supposed to be my dress fitting, but was currently a shopping session for both of them. "How does this look?" Lily asked, holding up a stunning black dress. "I like it," I replied. "It's black," Saoirse said. Lily looked confused. "And?"Saoirse blushed a little. "Well...I'm wearing black. We'd be

As expected, nothing in the video had changed. And if common logic was to be followed, it pointed to Axel as guilty of something, at least. "What now?" Max asked, leaning back in his chair. "Now, we attend to other pressing issues and let Axel stew for a while longer. Maybe his answer will change when he's had a bit more time to think." "What if it doesn't?" Max asked. "Julietta is still in pain. As long as you keep his dosage of wolfsbane constant so its effects don't change, he won't be able to bear it." "And what if Julietta stops feeling the pain?" "How?"Max shrugged. "I don't know. They have their own witch, don't they? They could do the same spell Saoirse did with Barry or something." "Their witch is dead," Cassian imputed. I was surprised. "Dead?" He nodded. "Rowan arrow through the throat. During the fight.""I guess we don't have to worry about that anymore," Max mumbled, scratching at his shoulder.Only then did I realize that his sling and bandages were gone. "Ma

"I think he's ready to talk," Max said as Cassian and I met him at Axel's cell door. "About time," Cassian muttered as he pushed the door open and strolled in. Immediately Axel saw us, an expression of immense rage marred his features. He yanked at his chains, snarling at me with elongated canines. "What did you do to her?" He yelled. "What the fuck did you do to her?" Max and I exchanged a sideways glance, and Max shrugged. "He's been like this for a while now. I think most of the remaining effects of the wolfsbane are gone and he can now feel Julietta's pain."As if in response, Axel clutched his left arm, groaning in pain. Through the dried blood and grime on his face, I could see that he was ashen. "She's your sister. How could you do this to her?" I rolled my eyes. "How convenient of you to remember she's my sister. Weren't we sisters when she tossed me in a cell worse than this one and set a date for my execution?" "You were guilty!" He roared. "If you still believe that

I woke up the next morning feeling only slightly refreshed. The sun was up so I didn't expect Cassian to still be in bed, but when I rolled over, I came face to face with him. "Good morning," he greeted softly. For reasons I couldn't understand, my face reddened, and I stuttered a bit. "Good... Good morning." "You skipped dinner last night," he said. "You must be hungry now." As if my body understood what he said, my belly rumbled, and my blush deepened. "Um...yeah. I didn't expect to sleep through the day when I fell asleep yesterday. Did you try to wake me?" He nodded. "You slept very deeply." "Sorry. I guess I was more tired than I knew." I glanced out the window at the bright sun. "Don't you...have work to do at the pack house today?" Cassian smiled. "Are you bored of me already? You want me to leave?" I shook my head. "Oh, no. It's not like that. I'm just surprised that you're here. You're usually up by this time." Cassian sat up. "I am up. I've been awake for a few hou
