Rita Clare resisted the urge to strangle her, wiping the saliva from her hands with a tissue in disgust. She should have drugged Evelyn Bert on the way here if she had known that the girl would suddenly become uncooperative. It was her own carelessness.

The most important thing now was to get through today; by tomorrow, everything would be set in stone, and it would be too late for the Huo family to back out. With this thought in mind, Rita Clare adjusted her expression, looking at Evelyn Bert, who was touching her small belly, with an unprecedented gentleness.

She grabbed Evelyn Bert's hand and said, "After you eat, we'll play a game."

"A game?" Evelyn Bert was very excited. "Is it hide-and-seek?"

Rita Clare shook her head. "Of course not. It's a more fun game than hide-and-seek."

"What kind of game? I want to play, right now."

Evelyn Bert stood up, ready to pull off her veil and kick off her high heels.

"Wait, wait, wait," Rita Clare stopped her, worried that she might damage the expensive custom-made wedding dress and veil. "The game is that you must stay still and sit here like a bride. Someone will come to pretend to be the groom and play with you, but you can't let him see your face."

"Is it really that magical?" Evelyn Bert's eyes widened in excitement.

"You can't let him see your face, or you lose. If you lose, no cake for you," Rita Clare hit her weak spot. This silly girl was sometimes easy to fool, but every time she mentioned cake, Evelyn Bert would do anything.

Sure enough, at the mention of her favorite cake, Evelyn Bert's eyes lit up. "Okay, leave it to me. I won't let anyone see my face."

"You can't take off the veil. If he sees you, you lose," Rita Clare repeated, just to be safe.

"Okay!" Evelyn Bert clenched her fists, sat back on the sofa, and clumsily pulled the veil over her face.

*Knock, knock, knock!*

Just as she was struggling to cover her face, there was a knock on the door. Hearing someone outside, Rita Clare quickly helped her adjust the six layers of veil, making sure no one could see Evelyn Bert's face. Then, she opened the door with a polite smile.

"Mrs. Fang, are you in there?" The person outside, perhaps tired of knocking, finally spoke up.

"Yes, yes, I'm here," Rita Clare replied, checking the veil one last time before opening the door. Mrs. Lu, an elderly servant of the Huo family, entered, carrying a tray covered with a red cloth.

"Earlier, a maid heard some noise inside. Is everything alright?" Mrs. Lu asked, noticing the motionless bride.

"No, no, nothing. My daughter and I were talking about a TV show. She was imitating the heroine, screaming for help. She did such a good job, she could be an actress," Rita Clare quickly explained, sitting down next to Evelyn Bert and putting an arm around her, pretending they were close.

Mrs. Lu, seeing that Miss Fang didn't resist, asked, "Miss Fang, is that true?"

The heavily veiled figure nodded. Although Mrs. Lu found it strange that Miss Fang was wearing so many layers of veil on such a hot day, she dismissed her doubts, thinking that if there were any ill intentions, the engagement would have been called off already.

"Miss Fang, the old madam asked me to give you something," Mrs. Lu said, uncovering the tray. Inside, nestled between the red cloth, was a stunning jade bracelet, a family heirloom passed down through generations, given only to the wife of the eldest son.

Seeing the bracelet, Rita Clare's composure faltered. "This... this..."

"This is a family heirloom, passed down to the wife of the eldest son," Mrs. Lu explained, placing the bracelet on Evelyn Bert's wrist. "The old madam wants Miss Fang to have it. I believe Mrs. Fang understands the meaning."

"Of course," Rita Clare forced a smile, seething inside. The value of the bracelet was immense, and it was given to Evelyn Bert instead of her own daughter, which infuriated her. But whatever belonged to Evelyn Bert was theirs, and a little food would easily convince her to part with the bracelet.

"Tonight, the young master will come. Miss Fang, make the most of this opportunity. If you can bear a child for the Huo family, your future will be bright," Mrs. Lu hinted.

"Yes, yes, she will live a good life with the young master and try to have a healthy baby boy," Rita Clare replied, hiding her resentment.

"In that case, Mrs. Fang, please come with me," Mrs. Lu said, leading Rita Clare out. "It's time for dinner, and you must be hungry. We'll leave the newlyweds alone."

Mrs. Lu led Rita Clare out and closed the door behind them. As night fell, the servants wheeled Orville Quiller, a brooding man in a wheelchair, into the decorated bridal chamber. After the servants left, Orville Quiller looked at the veiled, petite woman sitting on the bed, then turned away.

"No matter why you married into the Huo family, I will never like you. We will keep our distance," he said, believing himself unworthy of genuine affection due to his condition.

The woman on the bed did not respond, nodding slightly. Orville Quiller took it as a response and was about to leave when he noticed a faint snoring sound. His face darkened, and he wheeled himself to her, yanking off the veil.

With a thud, Evelyn Bert, who was sleeping soundly, was jolted forward, bumping her head against his chin. Both groaned, and Evelyn Bert, still half-asleep, rubbed her eyes and, upon seeing the man, smiled foolishly. "Hey, big brother, you're so handsome." She even reached out and patted his abs.
