Chapter 2

Author: Green Fur
I woke up unusually early the next morning.

When I walked into the closet, I stopped short. Rows of haute couture dresses. Shelves overflowing with luxury bags.

Every single one a gift from Theo—for holidays, for anniversaries, for no reason at all.

Even the fake anniversaries I invented on a whim? He celebrated those too.

I used to complain that he was stingy, but the truth was, he was only harsh on himself. When it came to me and our son, he had never once held back.

And now, these gifts had become the only capital our family had left to turn things around.

I made up my mind—I was going to sell every last one of them.

I spent the whole day posting everything on resale sites.

I needed cash fast, so I priced everything absurdly low.

High-end limited editions that once commanded reverence from behind glass cases were now being grabbed up like cabbages at a market's closing hour.

As the numbers in my bank account climbed with each sale, I felt the smallest knot in my chest begin to loosen.

It was nowhere near enough to cover the "mountain of debt" everyone in the comments kept harping on.

But at the very least, Theo could eat fewer frozen pizzas and add an extra handful of pepperoni once in a while.

By the time my back ached from packing orders, Oliver had returned home from school.

The second he walked through the door, he nearly tripped over the mountain of delivery boxes scattered across the floor.

When he saw me stuffing the limited-edition bags I used to treasure into cardboard boxes, he immediately ran over.

"Mommy, you don't want them anymore?" he asked with a small pout, looking absolutely heartbroken.

"These bags are still really new. Are you throwing them away to buy newer ones again?"

As he spoke, he carefully stroked my Chanel bag with tiny hands.

The expression on his face looked exactly the same as when I used to throw away Theo's worn-out sweatpants after the waistband got loose.

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

"Why's this diva suddenly having a clearance sale?"

"Isn't it obvious? She found out Theo's company is going under, so she's planning to bail with whatever cash she can grab."

"This kid should be growing up like a little prince of a powerful family, but that woman has raised him into a cheapskate."

"Don't worry. Once Evelyn shows up, Theo and Ollie will finally get the happy life they're meant to have."

Those damn comments stank worse than farts.

As I saw the worry in Oliver's clear eyes, I crouched down and gently ruffled his hair.

"I'm not throwing them away, and I'm not buying new ones," I explained. "I'm selling them so we can put the money in our little piggy bank. Daddy's been working so hard lately, and I want to save up enough to buy yummy food for you and Daddy later. Is that okay?"

Oliver's eyes lit up the moment he heard I was saving money for Theo.

Just then, the house phone rang.

I leaned over to check the caller ID. The name Evelyn Clark appeared on the screen.

The floating comments instantly exploded, flooding my vision so densely I could barely see.

"She's here! Evelyn has entered the story!"

"Evelyn was Theo's classmate in college. She's smart, capable, and incredibly good with money."

"She's definitely here to help Theo restructure his assets. He's finally preparing to dump this spendthrift wife."

"That idiot Riley is finally getting what she deserves! This is so satisfying!"

My head spun violently, as if someone had taken a club to it.

Evelyn?

Was she the woman everyone said would help Theo get back on his feet and who actually knew how to save money?

My hand trembled as I pressed the answer button.

"Hello, Mr. Hudson."

A calm, professional female voice came through the line.

"I've already completed the asset restructuring plan you mentioned previously..."

Asset restructuring?

Wasn't that just a polished way of saying bankruptcy liquidation?

A month later, it was my birthday. It was also the day our whole family flew out to the island. The helicopter circled over the deep blue sea, hovering above the private island I had only ever heard about. The view was undeniably breathtaking.White sand beaches, swaying palm trees, and a luxurious villa nestled along the shore. However, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.Only after the helicopter landed did I realize what it was.At the entrance of the villa, there were no uniformed staff waiting to greet us. Instead, there was a row of solar panels.Theo held my hand proudly as he introduced it."Darling, the island used to run entirely on diesel generators. It was incredibly expensive, so I had Ms. Clark convert everything to solar and wind power. Now we pay nothing for electricity."I stared at him."That's great. It's very eco-friendly."Dinner time came.I had imagined a lavish seafood feast of Auscranian lobster, king crab, and bluefin tuna.In my

Two hours later, I waddled out of the restaurant holding my stomach."Eve, how did you even find this place? That was amazing!" I said, rubbing my belly contentedly. "I can't believe how much money I used to waste just for so-called status. I'm never going to be that reckless, clueless spender again..."As we talked, we passed by a pop-up exhibition. The space was decorated in dreamy shades of pink and lavender, attracting a crowd of young women.I noticed Evelyn's steps slow almost imperceptibly. Her gaze landed on a fluffy plush toy, and for a brief moment, something almost childlike flickered in her eyes. Then she looked away. Her usual logic snapped back into place."Let's go. It's just a polyester-filled mass-produced product. The cost is under five dollars, and they're selling it for 80 dollars. Zero appreciation potential. Total rip-off."She turned to leave. This time, I grabbed her wrist."Eve, you're right about the numbers, but you missed one variable."She looked

After that night, Evelyn and I became surprisingly close friends. That afternoon, just before the workday ended, I waited outside Theo's company building. The moment I spotted that familiar figure, I dashed over. "Evelyn! I'm here to pick you up!""You came this early, Riley?" Evelyn asked, looking a little surprised. "Have you been waiting long?"I smiled. "I just got here. Come on, dinner's on me!"As soon as I said that, Theo emerged through the revolving glass doors. The moment he saw me, all the tension drained from his face."Darling, why are you here so early? What do you feel like eating? I'll take you to..."Before he could finish, I linked my arm through Evelyn's. "Darling, you misunderstood. I came to pick up Evelyn. There's still half a pizza left in the fridge from yesterday. Just microwave it for two minutes when you get home. Don't waste electricity heating up the oven.Theo's hand froze awkwardly midair, and the devastation on his face was visible to the naked

To thank Evelyn, I decided to invite her over for dinner. The moment Theo heard I was having a guest, his immediate reaction was, "We're eating at home. Restaurant food is overpriced, and who knows what kind of oil they use. Besides, Evelyn's picky. She only buys groceries on sale."I just stared at him.Since when did buying discounted food make someone picky? That evening, Evelyn showed up right on time, carrying a bag of strawberries still dotted with dirt."Mrs. Hudson, I picked these myself at a strawberry farm. I made sure to get the biggest, reddest ones. They might look a little messy, but I promise they're fresh and delicious."She handed me the bag with a completely straight face.Evelyn was such a down-to-earth woman. At the dinner table, the atmosphere was strangely harmonious.Theo and Evelyn looked like they'd finally found their long-lost fellow discount devotees."The current pork prices are ridiculously inflated," Theo said seriously. "I've realized going to

When I got home and saw the empty walk-in closet, the sorrow hit me all over again."My Hermès Himalayan Birkin, my limited-edition Constance, and that Kelly I waited two whole years to get…"I slumped against the glass cabinet like I had lost all will to move.Oliver walked in with his little hands behind his back. Theo followed right behind him, doing the exact same thing."Don't be sad, Mommy." Oliver pulled a crumpled plastic bag from his pocket. Inside were all the coins he had been saving."This is all my secret savings. 32 dollars and 50 cents. You can use it to buy your bags back."When I looked at those big, sincere eyes of Oliver's, my heart just melted.I reached out, getting all teary. "Ollie..."Just as I was about to take the bag, Theo grabbed my hand. "Hold on."He pushed up his non-existent glasses and gave Oliver the kind of sharp look a seasoned businessman would give a rival."Oliver, that 32 dollars and 50 cents came from helping me run errands and pick

"What?" This time, the shock was mine."Mrs. Hudson, Mr. Hudson did restructure a large portion of his assets some time ago," Evelyn explained helplessly, though she did her best to stay professional."The seller of that private island required full cash payment upfront, and the transaction window was extremely short. Mr. Hudson had to liquidate some non-core assets to avoid disrupting the company's cash flow. He even went so far as to cut his own personal expenses," she added, glancing at the faded collar of Theo's T-shirt.A flicker of admiration appeared in her eyes."Mr. Hudson said this was meant to be your birthday surprise and had to be kept strictly confidential. Even when the company's liquidity got so tight that he was only eating ten-dollar boxed meals for lunch, he repeatedly instructed me not to reveal a single word."My mouth fell open so wide it nearly hit the floor."This script makes no sense. I signed up for a 'rich guy loses it all' plotline. Since when does
