Chapter 2

Author: I. Winter
I came down with a fever. Perhaps it was from being overwhelmed with anger and distress, or maybe from sitting on the floor all night.

My temperature spiked to 103.1°F. It felt as though I was burning alive one moment and freezing the next.

Drifting in and out of consciousness, I dialed Raymond's number out of habit. Previously, if I felt even slightly under the weather, he would drop whatever he was doing and rush home, even if he was in the middle of an international meeting. However, this time, it took him a long while to pick up.

"Hello?"

The voice on the line wasn't Raymond's. It was Monica.

Her voice was syrupy sweet and laced with the lazy languor of someone who had just woken up.

"Oh, Linnea? Raymond's in the shower."

Raymond was taking a shower at Monica's place first thing in the morning? I gritted my teeth, clinging to my last bit of consciousness. "Put him on the phone."

"Don't be upset, Linnea." Monica chuckled. "I accidentally spilled coffee on Raymond yesterday. You know how much of a germaphobe he is, so he crashed in the guest room for the night. He really is the most attentive caregiver. Last night... I was so exhausted. Thank goodness he was here!"

Every single word plunged like a knife into my heart.

"Monica…" My voice trembled uncontrollably. "Put him on the phone!"

"What's wrong?" Raymond's low voice came through the line. It was raspy as though he had just woken up.

Monica responded coyly, "Linnea sounds upset, Raymond. She insists on checking up on you."

"Linnea?" His voice instantly turned cold. "What are you making a fuss about this early in the morning?"

Scalding hot tears rolled down my cheeks and into my hair. "I have a fever, Raymond. I feel awful... I want to go to the hospital."

Even after reading the memos on his phone and that heated argument we had the day before, I still held on to a ridiculous sliver of hope for him at that moment. After all, we had been married for seven years. Even if one kept a pet dog for that long, they'd develop feelings for it, wouldn't they?

Silence hung on the line for two seconds. Then I heard the rustle of clothes, and Raymond's tone softened slightly. "How high is your fever?"

"103.1°F."

"Take some fever medicine first and have the driver take you to the hospital." Raymond's voice remained calm and composed. "Moni hasn't finished hanging her paintings yet, and she can't reach them. I'll head back once I'm done helping her."

Monica hadn't finished hanging her paintings.

I was burning up to the point of passing out, while my husband was helping another woman hang her paintings.

"Raymond..." I panted weakly. "If I don't go to the hospital, I'll die... I'm allergic to penicillin, and the medicine at home is already—"

Monica suddenly cried out on the other end of the line. Right on its heels came the sound of something crashing to the floor.

"What's wrong, Moni?" Raymond's voice was immediately filled with panic. It was a kind of urgency he had never shown me.

"My hand... The frame hit my hand, Raymond. It hurts so much..." she wept.

"Don't move! Let me see! You're bleeding... Hang in there. I'll take you to get it bandaged right now!"

Chaos erupted on the other end, and I was completely forgotten.

"Raymond…" I forced out. I desperately wanted to tell him that I was in pain, too. I was bleeding too. My heart was bleeding.

However, he had hung up on me.

I clutched my phone, looking up at the glittering chandelier on the ceiling. Gradually, my vision blurred.

As it turned out, in his eyes, a minor scrape on Monica's finger was a catastrophic event, while my dangerously high fever was nothing more than my attempt at "making a scene". I forced myself up and staggered toward the stairs.

I was halfway down the stairs when everything suddenly went dark. Before I knew it, I was tumbling down the steps.

Excruciating pain shot through me. Right before I lost consciousness, I thought I saw Raymond when he was 18.

He wore a white shirt as he piggybacked me across the school field after I sprained my ankle, sweat dripping down his face. He had told me, "Fear not, Linnea. I'm here. I won't ever let you get hurt."

I thought to myself, "Liar. Raymond, you big, damn liar!"

Raymond's case went to trial a year later. He appeared in a prison jumpsuit on the television screen, and his hair had turned white overnight. Callum sat beside me and handed me a glass of warm water. "Do you regret it?" I shook my head. "No." I simply stared at the stranger on the television and found it almost laughable. "I wasted seven years of my life on someone like him." Callum took my hand. "It's all behind you now." The news report aired. Hudson Group filed for bankruptcy after being implicated in tax evasion, misappropriation of funds, and other financial crimes. Raymond was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted on multiple charges. Monica was convicted of fraud and copyright infringement and sentenced to three years in prison. "Rumor had it that she went insane in prison, constantly claiming that a ghost was crying on her paintings. I turned off the television. "Let's go take a look at our new work."Callum didn't budge. He pulled out a blueprin

The entire hall went pin-drop silent.Raymond snapped his head up, his eyes bloodshot. "Dream on! You're backing me into a dead end, Linnea!""I'm backing you into a dead end?" I chuckled. "That's not true. I'm simply reclaiming what's mine. Oh, and one more thing."I shifted my gaze to Monica, who was cowering behind Raymond. At that moment, she was shaking like a leaf, her face completely drained of color. "Ms. Melanie." I picked up the microphone. My voice was so gentle it sent a chill down everyone's spine. "I heard your breakthrough piece, Girl in the Rain, has been valued at a pretty high price lately?"Monica shuddered before stammering out, "W-What are you trying to do?"I waved my hand. The giant screen changed, revealing a clip of surveillance footage. It was from five years ago, recorded in my home studio. I was standing in front of my easel in the footage, completely immersed in my painting. I was painting the Girl in the Rain. Monica could be seen secretly filming

Raymond looked as though he had just heard the funniest joke in the world. "Are you trying to tell me that you're the one who has been supporting me?"He gestured at the opulent hall around us and his expensive bespoke suit. "Did that fever fry your brain, Linnea? How much could that lousy little studio of yours possibly make in a year? It isn't even enough to cover the flowers we buy for our house! Without me, you'd have starved to death on the streets long ago!"Monica clutched her neck. Tears welled up in her eyes as she chimed in. "How can you say that about Raymond, Linnea? He works so hard every single day just to provide for you…"I couldn't be bothered to waste my breath on these two idiots. I shifted my attention to Callum. "Let's begin, Callum."He nodded and snapped his fingers. The giant screen in the venue suddenly lit up. That screen that was supposed to showcase Monica's paintings now displayed one architectural blueprint after another, along with a series of aston

A week later, at Aurelia's grandest auction, Raymond, the night's biggest sponsor, showed up in a white suit. Monica had her arm looped through his. She wore the latest starry gown from a famous designer, with the "Heart of the Ocean" necklace—which originally belonged to me—around her neck. Raymond had given it to me on our third wedding anniversary. Yet, it now hung around another woman's neck. "This is far too precious, Raymond…" Monica touched the necklace with a bashful look. "Won't Linnea be upset when she finds out?"Raymond took a sip of his champagne, his expression apathetic. "Why are you bringing her up? She's such a buzzkill. It's been a week, and I still haven't heard a word from her. It looks like she's dead set on giving me the silent treatment this time." Monica bit her lip, though there was a triumphant glint in her eyes. "Linnea's probably just waiting for you to pick her up... After all, you're all she has." "She's waiting for me to pick her up?" He scoffe

Rainwater and muddy water streamed down my pants. I dragged my throbbing right leg forward, slowly making my way out of the gates of the Hudson residence. Raymond's furious roar sounded behind me. "Lock the gates! No one's allowed to open them for her. If she doesn't learn her lesson the hard way, she'll never learn how to behave herself!" The ornate iron gates closed behind me. I stood on the curb, soaked to the skin, but I felt an unprecedented sense of relief. I pulled out my phone. The screen was flooded with text notifications informing me that Raymond had deactivated my cards. Just then, I received a message from Raymond. "I've deactivated your cards. I'll reactivate them when you learn how to apologize. Reflect on what you've done while you're out in the streets for the next few days. Don't expect me to come looking for you!" Right after that, I received a voice message.Monica's voice was choked full of emotion. "Don't do this, Raymond… Linnea's injured, and she do

On the day I was discharged from the hospital, no one came to pick me up. Leaning on my crutches, I slowly made my way out of the hospital, one step at a time. My cards were frozen, and I couldn't pay with my phone. I searched through all my pockets and only managed to find a few dozen dollars in loose change. I hailed a cab and went back to the home Raymond and I shared. Even if I was going to leave, I still had to get my ID and the things my parents had left behind. As soon as I pushed open the door, the living room was filled with laughter. Monica was curled up on the couch in my silk pajamas, feeding Raymond grapes. He was looking at his laptop. Occasionally, he opened his mouth to accept a grape with an indulgent look in his eyes. When she spotted me, Monica hurriedly tried to get up, only to "accidentally" fall into Raymond's arms. "Linnea… You're back!"Raymond casually wrapped his arm around her waist and looked up at me. His gaze was stone-cold, as if he were lookin
