Chapter 3 Promise

Author: The Spring Hill
Would she keep her promise to Yves, or would she stoop to the lowest and vilest level of humanity when survival was on the line?

The rescue squad was coming, and we had more than enough resources to keep us alive until then.

The promise of abundance gave Yvonne confidence. She and Yves started eating through resources like they were nothing.

They did their laundry with clean water from the water purifier, consumed emergency medicine like antibiotics as if they were supplements, and even took out batteries from the sanctuary's electronics just to charge their music player.

And then it was the evening of the third day. Only half an hour left until the rescue squad's arrival.

I was in a meeting with my teammates, but Yvonne barged inside and interrupted us unceremoniously. "Give me the serum, Sieghart!" she ordered imperiously.

A frown creased my forehead, and I raised my gaze to meet hers. "Why? Someone infected?"

The answer that came from Yvonne shocked everyone into disbelief.

"No, but Yves has a fever. It's 102 degrees! I had him take fever pills, but it didn't work! Just stop talking and give me the serum! He needs the injection!"

I slowly stood up from my seat. With icy frigidity in my voice, I said, "Do you have any idea how important this serum is? I spent three years developing it. It can stop the zombie virus from spreading through the body if injected within five minutes after first contact.

"It's still experimental, but this is humanity's last hope, and the one I have is the last dose."

"I know, I know!" Yvonne waved her hand dismissively, impatiently. "But your serum kills viruses, right? Yves is really uncomfortable right now, so give that serum to me already! You're wasting my time!"

And then, a pregnant pause slid into the meeting room. The silence weighed heavily on all of us. My deputy was the first to break. He rocketed up from his seat in fury.

"Is there even a brain in that head of yours, Yvonne? You're going to waste precious serum on a goddamn fever?"

"What do you mean I'm wasting it?" Yvonne shot back. "Yves is weak to begin with. That fever can kill him if left untreated! And serums are meant to save people!"

I refused to hand the serum over. Something cruel within Yvonne pushed her past the edge. She pointed her gun at my head. "Hand it over. Don't make me make you."

One of my teammates tried to stop her. "Are you out of your mind, Yvonne? You can't…"

Yvonne fired at him, and the bullet nearly hit the guy.

I looked at Yvonne. She was the woman I used to love, and I cursed myself for being so blind. In my previous life, I tried to save her time and time again, and every time, I risked my life to do it.

This time, she was going to hold my life hostage to help Yves. Though reluctant, my teammates had to hand the serum to her, and they could only watch as Yvonne injected our precious liquid into Yves.

Minutes later, Yves' fever went down, and color returned to his face. I sneered in silence.

The man feigned weakness and pushed himself up. There was redness in his eyes as he looked at us. "I'm sorry. I know that serum's precious. You shouldn't have used it on me. I… I keep holding you guys back. Makes me feel useless."

My teammates turned their heads away, but not from shame. They did it out of disgust. Yves' act was apparent.

Concerned for Yves, Yvonne held his hand. With tears in her eyes, she said, "Don't say that. Your life is worth more than any serum!"

Lovingly, Yves said, "You've been so kind to me, Yvonne. I swear, I'll protect you forever, even if it is the last thing I do!"

The stench of their affair nearly made me throw up. I risked my life more times than I cared to count in my previous life to save her, but all she said was, "It's your job to protect me."

And now she looked moved beyond anything just because Yves made a promise that hadn't been proven to be good.

This was a joke.

Soon, the roars of rotors approached the sanctuary. The rescue squad was here. We packed up our gear and came out of the sanctuary.

Yvonne grabbed Yves and tried to jump onto the chopper, but her excitement was stopped by a soldier. "Sorry, we need to verify your identities."

My teammates got onto the chopper without any problem, and the smile slowly disappeared from Yvonne's face.

The soldier flipped through the list, but the more he did, the tighter his frown became. "Yvonne Brown… Yves Claude…"

In the end, he said, "Sorry, but you're not on the list."

"Don't do that."My deputy could not believe what I just did. "Sieghart, this bastard betrayed us! Did you forget what he did to us? You can't possibly spare him!"I waved my hand with a smile. "Offing him with a gun is the easy way out for him. Let the zombies do their job. He's going to watch them gnaw away at his flesh, inch by inch. That's the least punishment a traitor deserves."My teammates agreed with me, but Yves, still alive, snarled and broke into laughter."Save me, or I'm destroying the sample! You'll never develop any new serum!" He was holding the sample tightly, and his eyes were filled with mad cruelty.I chortled and slowly took out the same tube of sample from my pocket. "You mean this sample?"Yves' eyes went wide with disbelief, and his face trembled. "Impossible! If you have the serum, then what's in this contai—""Fake sample, obviously." I swirled the tube I was holding. "You think I'd let a traitor like you guard something that important? I knew you'd do

Yvonne crawled over to me like a maggot and held the leg of my trousers. "I-I'm sorry, Sieghart. I can't believe I ever trusted that bastard! I'm so stupid! Please, forgive me!"I pulled my leg back. Icily, I said, "You don't deserve forgiveness."On our way out, she kept begging me to forgive her. "Sieghart, we've dated for a long time. Please, give me a chance to prove myself. I won't make the same mistake again! I swear!""Shut up!" my deputy snapped. "Don't call yourself his girlfriend! You nearly cost us our evacuation for that bastard! Then, you wasted our precious serum, and now you almost got us killed! Get your ass out of my sight, or I'm going to shoot you in the head, you bitch!"I pulled out a dagger from my belt and tossed it at Yvonne. "Like I said, you're on your own. You're no longer a part of the team. And I told you we're over, so stop clinging to me."She got on her knees and crawled to me on all fours. Then, she wrapped her arms around my leg. No strength could

First, there was the rumble of the shutter opening, and then thundering, haphazard footsteps echoed through the air down the hallway."Fuck!" My deputy held up his firearm. "Yves opened up the shutter! That bastard!"I turned my head, but Yves had already run away."Yves, wait!" Yvonne screamed as she rushed over to him, but she could do nothing as she climbed up the safety ladder. With every ounce of strength in her body, she tried to reach out to the stairs, but her hands closed around air. Yves stood on high ground, staring at us triumphantly. There was a smile on his face, and in his arms was the precious sample."Yves, put the ladder down. I need to get up." Yvonne's voice was trembling so hard, it was nearly impossible to make out her sentence.Yves snickered. "Why should I save you?" He clapped the container. "With this baby, I can take all the credit for myself."Yvonne turned as white as paper. "This isn't the deal! You said once you get the sample, both of us can—""Y

"I… I learned essential life-saving techniques back at the hospital, and I was a nurse. I can help with the wounded."Yves nervously volunteered himself. "I don't have any skills, but I'm a guy. I can carry stuff.""You? Carry stuff?" My deputy snickered, and he pointed at Yves' still-bruised cheek. "You can't even beat a woman in a fight. Useful? Don't make me laugh."The teammates roared with laughter.Yvonne went white, but she stood her ground stubbornly. "I know we made mistakes, but give us a chance to make up for them. I swear I won't go against your orders this time. I'll follow them to a tee."Nobody believed them. They knew these two only wanted to tag along because the mission paid a hefty reward, and they wanted a cut.I raised my hand and told everyone to quiet down, then I turned around and whispered, "We'll let them tag along. If we run into any danger, we can use them to buy us some time. They'd work as good bait."My teammates trusted me, and they stopped compla

I would make her watch as her precious childhood friend took off his mask, bit by bit. She would wallow in her despair, and then she would understand the lengths her stupidity had taken her to.…Two days and one night later, we finally landed at the safe zone. Everyone was exhausted. The journey did not give us much time or comfort to rest. Once we got off the chopper, I applied for the best accommodations for my teammates. When it came to Yvonne, however, I told the soldier, "They're unimportant. Just give them a place to sleep. You don't have to go out of your way to provide any comfort."Yvonne flew into a rage. "How can you say that, Sieghart? I'm your girlfriend! You can't just let me sleep in the worst residential area! And it's a mixed zone!"I sneered. "Hey, you don't want to stay away from Yves. The mixed zone should be a good thing for you. You two can sleep together. It's perfect."Yvonne went red. She turned her sights to the tents erected nearby. The people there sm

Someone was mimicking Yves' earlier promise that seemed so solid and unbreakable. They were trying to get under his skin. The show was nearing its end. I let out a fake sigh and approached the soldier. "Well, it's just one extra person. You can make an exception for them, can't you? I'll talk to your boss if they ask."…The chopper took off slowly. Yvonne was curled up in the corner like a pillbug, and her tears wouldn't stop coming. They'd smeared her makeup and turned it into a blotchy mess.Yves had the gall to approach her. His voice was quiet and careful. "I can explain, Yvonne. I…"Yvonne smacked her palm into his cheek as hard as she could. "Explain, my foot! You called me useless! What now, you're saying it's a lie? You're a bastard, Yves!""I-It's not what you think!" Yves gave me a glance. That was on purpose, obviously. "I had to make Sieghart show his true colors!"Yvonne's arm froze, her second slap dying down. "What do you mean?""It's obvious, isn't it? It was a
