Chapter 3

作者: Violet Haze
The moment Michelle heard what I said, she struggled, trying to shake off Baron's grip.

The dormitory entryway was already cramped to begin with. With three people squeezed inside, there was no room to turn around.

I stepped back slightly, watching the two of them pull at each other with cold detachment.

Baron's usual gentleness was gone. His face flushed red with anger.

"How can Michelle be compared to you? She's suffered so much since she was young. Now that she's finally back, she still has to raise a child all by herself. You're a woman too. How can you have so little compassion?"

I looked at his bloodshot eyes and, for a moment, felt disoriented.

In my previous life, I had raised a child on my own too.

Everyone revolved around Michelle.

How about me? I handled everything alone. I took care of my son and looked after both sets of parents.

Big issues, small matters… Everything waited for me to deal with.

As for the two of them, they spent their lives carefree, traveling and enjoying themselves.

A dull ache spread through my chest. I pressed a hand against it before lifting my gaze to Baron.

"Fine. I feel sorry for her, so you can take her back to your place now and hand over your entire salary next month while you're at it.

"If you're leaving, then go. If Mrs. Jones next door wakes up, your little situation will be all over the neighborhood by tomorrow."

Without waiting for their reaction, I turned around and walked straight into the bathroom.

In my new life, I only want to live for myself.

After a while, Baron's voice came faintly from the doorway.

"The rain's too heavy. I'll take Michelle home first. Get some rest. I'll be back later."

The sound of running water mixed with the clear click of the wooden door opening and closing.

The ache in my chest had completely disappeared.

After finishing my shower and getting changed, I reached up to the top shelf of the bookcase and pulled down a thick book.

Inside it was everything I had saved over the years.

Most of Baron's salary had gone to Michelle. What little remained had been given to his mother.

Our household expenses had almost entirely been supported by my income.

Even the apartment I was in had been assigned to me by the university after I became a teaching assistant.

I took out the small wad of cash, tucked it into my pocket and went to bed, satisfied.

"From today onward, Baron, whoever you choose to play the savior for has nothing to do with me,' I thought.

The next morning, Baron finally returned with dark circles under his eyes.

"What you said last night was too harsh. Michelle cried the whole night. No matter what I said, she refused to stay at my place. Come with me later and apologize to her.

"Did you make breakfast? We can bring it along."

He opened his mouth to continue, but then noticed my pale face, how I was slumped weakly against the sofa.

He froze for a second, then reached out to touch my forehead.

"You've got a fever this bad and didn't tell me?"

I brushed his hand away, lowered my head, and took a sip of water, forcing down the bitter taste of medicine in my mouth.

For years after our marriage, I had taken care of his every need. Sometimes, I even prepared things for Michelle as well.

However, I did not want to do anything anymore.

Our marriage had been a calculation from the very beginning. It was time for it to end.

Seeing that I remained silent, Baron hesitated for only a few seconds before speaking again.

"About that upcoming competition… Could you give your spot to Michelle?"

By the time I got home after the competition, it was already the afternoon three days later.Baron was sitting by the door, smoking. The ground in front of him was littered with cigarette butts. In just a few days, he looked completely worn down and unkempt with stubble creeping across his jaw.I took out my keys and unlocked the door. His voice, hoarse and low, came from behind me."You already knew, didn't you?"I raised an eyebrow but said nothing.Of course I knew. Sandy had not been sick at all that day. Michelle had just made up an excuse to lure him there, planning to use the same trick she once used on Hayden, that time on Baron. So what? For me, it was a good thing.Otherwise, I had no idea how long it would take to get out of that suffocating marriage.I could not afford to wait.Baron seemed to read my thoughts. He pressed a hand to his temple, eyes bloodshot with exhaustion."No wonder you stopped arguing with me and caring that I was getting close to Michelle…

If that had been my past life, hearing Baron say that would have made me happier than anything. However, I came to realize that he could never follow through.Even if he wanted to, Michelle would never let him go so easily. That entire night, Baron sat in the chair, watching me.I could tell he had something he wanted to say. What did that have to do with me?I did not want to hear it anyway.Early the next morning, I went home. The moment Margaret saw me, she dropped what she was doing and hurried over."Well? You look alright now."I smiled and nodded. "I should be thanking you for taking me to the clinic. Otherwise, I probably would've collapsed from anemia."Seeing that I could still joke around, she relaxed. She glanced around, then leaned in and whispered in my ear, "Your man came back this morning. He had a huge fight with your sister. It sounded like he told her to move out immediately."I was surprised. I had not expected him to actually be that decisive. After t

That very night, Baron rushed over with Michelle's parents in tow. When he saw my head wrapped in layers of bandages, the tight frown on his face finally eased a little. He sat down beside my bed, his voice soft with concern."How could you be so careless? When I heard what happened, I nearly lost my mind."'You nearly lost your mind, yet you still had the presence of mind to bring reinforcements first. You seem perfectly clear-headed to me,' I thought. He gestured toward the door. Michelle walked in immediately, leading Sandy by the hand."Sandy, be a good girl and apologize to Aunt Valerie, okay?" Baron coaxed gently, nudging the little girl closer to my bed. However, the moment she saw me, she burst into tears again. Her cries were loud and piercing, filling the entire hospital room, yet not a single tear fell from her eyes.Baron looked heartbroken. He scooped her into his arms, then turned to me."Don't hold it against a child. I'll apologize on her behalf. She was really

It seemed Baron had already warned Michelle. For the next few days, she kept Sandy tucked away in the guest room, only coming out for meals. Those days passed without incident.I spent most of my time preparing design drafts for a competition that weekend, hoping it would strengthen my portfolio for my study-abroad application.Just when I thought nothing else could go wrong…I came home from work and froze.Every single design draft I had carefully stored on the top shelf of the cabinet had been pulled out. Many were torn to pieces, scattered messily across the floor.Sandy sat on the sofa, still ripping through another sheet with her tiny hands. My mind went blank with a loud buzz."What are you doing?!"I rushed forward and snatched the papers from her hands. Startled by my sudden movement, her lips trembled, and then she burst into tears."The bad lady hit me!"The crying drew Michelle out of the room. She hurried over and scooped Sandy into her arms."Valerie, she's

The next day, Baron got off work early and took me straight to the department store.I did not really need anything, but chances to spend his money were rare. I figured I might as well use the opportunity to pick up a few things I needed for the future."Sandy, does this outfit look good on Mommy? It looks great! If you wear this, Daddy will definitely like it! Can we go to Daddy's house for dinner tonight?"The moment we stepped inside, that all-too-familiar voice rang out.Baron froze mid-step.Michelle stood not far away, wearing a deep red coat, her long curled hair draped neatly behind her ears. She looked like one of those trendy actresses. She spotted me too, her almond-shaped eyes curving into a sweet smile."What a coincidence, Baron. Are you here shopping with your wife?"I gave a small nod, ignoring the provocation in her tone. I casually picked out a few outfits that suited me and handed them to the shop assistant.Just as Baron stepped forward to pay, Sandy sudden

I stared at Baron in disbelief. He looked just as uncomfortable, his eyes flickering away, unable to meet mine.I replied, "Do you even hear yourself? Forget how important this competition is to me. Have you thought about the fact that even if I step down and give her my spot, she still won't win anything?"Michelle simply did not have the talent. Back in university, her grades were always average at best.In a competition like that, she would not even make it past the preliminary round, let alone win a prize.Baron clearly understood what I meant. He pressed his lips together, hesitating before speaking."That's why… Michelle and I were thinking that we could use your design…"Before he could finish, I cut him off cold."Don't even think about it."At that moment, everything finally clicked. That was why, in my previous life, Michelle had been the one who went abroad to study. It was highly likely that Baron had stolen my design and recommended her to the professor.Even a
