LENA

I didn’t want to admit it, but Mom’s suspicions were starting to suffocate me. Every time she looked at me, I could see questions behind her eyes, ones she was too polite—or maybe too afraid—to ask. I was tired of skirting around the truth, tired of the tension that hung in the air like a storm about to break.

And Roman knew it.

That evening, after Mom left the hospital to run some errands, he appeared at my bedside with that same infuriating calm, dressed in his dark shirt with the sleeves rolled just enough to reveal the veins in his forearms. He looked like he had stepped straight out of a dream—or a warning.

“You can’t stay here much longer,” he said simply, as if reading my thoughts. “The hospital’s just a temporary excuse. Your mother will hover, and the longer you’re under her roof, the more questions she’ll dig up.”

My heart lurched. “So what are you su

LENAI should have known it wouldn’t stay hidden forever. Secrets like mine and Roman’s don’t dissolve into the dark. They rot, they fester, they grow until someone drags them into the light. That someone was my mother. The first time I realized she knew, it was in her smile. Not the soft, maternal one I grew up with, but a sharp curve that sliced right through me like glass. She didn’t need to speak; her eyes told me everything. They pinned me in place across the dinner table, flicking between me and Roman with a cruel sort of amusement.I felt the blood drain from my face, but I forced myself to eat, to pretend, to play along like nothing was wrong. But the charade didn’t last long. After that night, she was everywhere. Standing in the hallway when I came out of Roman’s room, as if she’d been waiting. Sitting on the patio when I crossed the garden, her gaze trailing me until my skin prickled. Lingering outside the guesthouse, claiming she was “just checking the roses.”She wasn’t ch

LENARoman was quieter than usual that evening. We’d just finished dinner, and instead of disappearing into his study or getting caught up on the endless phone calls he usually drowned in, he lingered. His gaze kept flicking to me, thoughtful, almost heavy, like he was carrying something he hadn’t yet decided whether to share.I leaned against the kitchen counter, sipping water, my stomach stretching under the light dress I wore. The baby moved faintly, a soft flutter that still startled me every time. I pressed my palm to the curve, hiding my smile as I caught Roman watching.“What?” I asked, trying to sound casual, but my cheeks warmed anyway. He shook his head slowly, a small curve tugging at his lips. “Nothing. You just…glow.”I rolled my eyes, even though my heart skipped at his words. “That’s a polite way of saying I look like a balloon.”Roman pushed off from where he leaned against the opposite counter and crossed the room with measured steps. When he stood in front of me, I h

LENAThe laughter from the garden drifted through the air, threaded with the clinking of glasses and the low hum of polite conversation. My mother had gone all out for tonight’s family gathering—caterers bustling, string lights twinkling, and guests scattered across the lawn like it was some fairytale evening. But to me, it felt like a performance, another stage where Roman and I had to play our separate roles.I stood near the buffet table, my plate forgotten, my eyes trailing across the yard until they inevitably found him. Roman, tall and controlled, with a glass of whiskey in his hand. He was surrounded by a small group of my mother’s friends, nodding politely, but every few seconds, his gaze flicked to me. It was a thread between us, taut and undeniable, no matter how hard we tried to hide it.My stomach twisted with heat, a reckless ache curling low. It had been days since we’d had more than a few stolen moments. Nights of longing g

LENAI sat on the edge of the bed in the guesthouse, my hands resting protectively over my stomach, waiting for him. Roman’s text kept replaying in my mind, those six words hammering through me until my chest ached: We need to talk. Tonight. Everything changes. The sound of his footsteps on the gravel outside made my pulse leap. When the door opened and he stepped inside, filling the room with his presence, I felt both relief and dread crash over me in one powerful wave.“Lena,” he said softly, his voice like a balm and a storm all at once.“Roman,” I whispered, rising to my feet.He crossed the room in three strides, his hands cupping my face before I could think to breathe. His eyes searched mine, dark and desperate, like he’d been holding back for too long.“I can’t do this anymore,” he murmured, his forehead pressing to mine. “I can’t pretend with Vivian, I can&rs

LENAWhen I opened the door and saw her standing there, I almost forgot how to breathe. My mother. Perfectly composed as always, her tailored dress hugging her figure, her makeup flawless, her hair falling in soft waves that somehow looked effortless. She didn’t look like someone blindsided or heartbroken. She looked like someone who knew more than she was letting on.“Mom,” I whispered, clutching the edge of the door as if it could hold me up. “I wasn’t expecting you.”“I can tell,” Vivian replied smoothly, her eyes flicking over me in a way that made my skin crawl. “You look… flushed. Is everything alright?”“Yes.” My voice came out too quick, too defensive. I cleared my throat. “Just… tired.”Her lips curved into a polite smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “May I come in?”I hesitated. My instincts screamed no, but she was

LENAThe knock at the door faded, replaced by the sound of footsteps retreating. Whoever it had been didn’t wait. Relief washed through me in a dizzying wave, though my body still thrummed from the heat of what we’d been doing on the counter just seconds before.Roman lingered close, his hand still firm on my thigh as if he didn’t want to let go. His breathing was ragged, and his gaze stayed locked on me, dark and possessive.“You’re shaking,” he said softly, brushing his thumb over my cheek.“I should be,” I whispered back. “We almost—someone could’ve—”“I don’t care.” His tone was harsh, but not at me. At the situation. At himself. At everything. “I’m done pretending, Lena. I can’t keep doing this while everyone expects me to marry your mother.”My chest tightened, the weight of those words crashing into me. I wanted to b
