LENA

The sound of my mother’s heels still echoed in my ears long after she stormed down the hallway. My lips tingled from the kiss Roman had stolen, and my chest felt like it had been pried open, leaving every nerve raw and exposed.

I sat frozen on the kitchen stool, the cool granite counter beneath my palms the only thing keeping me grounded. Roman was still standing across from me, jaw tight, eyes dark with a fury I couldn’t quite read—at her, at me, at the whole impossible mess we’d created.

My stomach churned, but not from the pregnancy. It was guilt. Pure, ugly guilt.

“Say something,” he demanded finally, his voice rough.

I shook my head, forcing air into my lungs. “What do you want me to say, Roman? That my mom just saw us? That she looked at me like I was betraying her?” My words cracked, and I hated the way my voice shook.

“She doesn’t matter,” he bit out, stepping closer. “You do.”

My heart squeezed painfully. I couldn’t let him see how much that one simple sentence made me a

LENAThe moment I stepped into his study, I knew I’d made a mistake. The room was dim, lit only by the low glow of a lamp on his desk. Roman stood there, tall and broad, his shoulders tense like he’d been pacing for hours. He turned as I closed the door behind me, and the look in his eyes made my breath catch.Dark. Wild. Possessive.“Lena,” he said, my name rough in his mouth, like he’d been biting it down all day.I crossed my arms over my chest, trying to mask the tremble in my hands. “I shouldn’t be here.”“You shouldn’t,” he agreed, stepping closer. “But you are.”My back hit the wall before I realized I’d even moved. My pulse was a drumbeat in my throat, echoing louder with every step he took toward me.“I told you,” I said, voice thin, “we can’t do this. Not after she—”“She saw,” he cut in sharply. “And you lied. You stood there and denied me like I was nothing.” His jaw flexed, his voice droppi

LENAI hadn’t meant for it to happen. God, it was the last thing I wanted anyone—especially her—to see.The morning had started quietly, a rare pocket of peace. Roman was in the kitchen of the guesthouse, sleeves rolled up, trying to make pancakes. I leaned against the counter, fighting laughter as he swore under his breath at the misshapen circles sizzling in the pan.“You’re supposed to flip them, not destroy them,” I teased, holding back a grin.He shot me a glare over his shoulder, but the corner of his mouth twitched upward. “You’re free to take over, if you think you can do better.”I shook my head, hugging my belly like it was a shield. “The baby and I vote you stick to boardrooms, not kitchens.”That earned me a laugh. A deep, rumbling one that sent a rush of warmth through me. It felt too normal, too domestic, like we were something we weren’t supposed to be. Husband and wife. A family already. He came closer, spatula still in hand, mock-threatening to dab batter on my nose.

LENAThere was no hiding it anymore.I stood in front of the mirror that morning, my shirt riding just a little tighter than before. The soft curve that had once been subtle now pressed against the fabric with undeniable proof. I ran my fingers over it, the roundness of my belly, and a cocktail of emotions swirled inside me—fear, pride, dread, love. The baby was growing. My secret was growing.Roman had been careful, always pulling me into his arms as if he could shield me from the world, from whispers, from the sharp eyes of my mother. But protection only went so far when the truth was written across my body.By the time I made my way downstairs for breakfast, Roman was already there, leaning against the counter with a cup of coffee in hand. His gaze snapped to me, sliding down, and I saw it—how his eyes softened instantly, how his lips pressed into the smallest of smiles.“You’re showing,” he said quietly, as if it were a miracle.Heat rushed to my cheeks. “Don’t say it like that.”

LENAI should have known it wouldn’t stay hidden forever. Secrets like mine and Roman’s don’t dissolve into the dark. They rot, they fester, they grow until someone drags them into the light. That someone was my mother. The first time I realized she knew, it was in her smile. Not the soft, maternal one I grew up with, but a sharp curve that sliced right through me like glass. She didn’t need to speak; her eyes told me everything. They pinned me in place across the dinner table, flicking between me and Roman with a cruel sort of amusement.I felt the blood drain from my face, but I forced myself to eat, to pretend, to play along like nothing was wrong. But the charade didn’t last long. After that night, she was everywhere. Standing in the hallway when I came out of Roman’s room, as if she’d been waiting. Sitting on the patio when I crossed the garden, her gaze trailing me until my skin prickled. Lingering outside the guesthouse, claiming she was “just checking the roses.”She wasn’t ch

LENARoman was quieter than usual that evening. We’d just finished dinner, and instead of disappearing into his study or getting caught up on the endless phone calls he usually drowned in, he lingered. His gaze kept flicking to me, thoughtful, almost heavy, like he was carrying something he hadn’t yet decided whether to share.I leaned against the kitchen counter, sipping water, my stomach stretching under the light dress I wore. The baby moved faintly, a soft flutter that still startled me every time. I pressed my palm to the curve, hiding my smile as I caught Roman watching.“What?” I asked, trying to sound casual, but my cheeks warmed anyway. He shook his head slowly, a small curve tugging at his lips. “Nothing. You just…glow.”I rolled my eyes, even though my heart skipped at his words. “That’s a polite way of saying I look like a balloon.”Roman pushed off from where he leaned against the opposite counter and crossed the room with measured steps. When he stood in front of me, I h
