Chapter 4

Author: Anonymous
"Kayla, when are you gonna get better? I miss you so much. Even if you're stuck in bed forever, I'll take care of you."

Lily's words felt like a hex.

Bryson side-eyed her, then knocked on the wooden bedside table.

"Stop the nonsense. She'll be fine. It's just a kidney."

Then he faced me, turning on the charm. "Don't stress. I'll get you the best meds out there. You'll be back to normal in no time."

So yeah—even he admitted I wasn't okay.

"Bryson's right. I didn't mean it like that. Kayla, look—we picked this out for your engagement. Isn't it pretty? Bryson said I'm about your size, so I tried it on. Don't be mad."

She shoved her phone at me.

On screen, she was all smiles, wearing the dress, snuggled up to Bryson like they were the couple getting engaged.

Honestly, if Lily wore it, I didn't want it.

I pointed at some random dress and told them both to leave.

That pic had Bryson looking like he wanted to disappear.

Lily? She flopped on the couch like she owned the place.

"You're right, Kayla. You should rest. Bryson, go. Don't worry, I've got her. Us girls get each other way better than guys do."

She wasn't leaving. I pulled the blanket over my head, tuning her out. The room went dead quiet.

Thirty minutes later, the boutique showed up—with every single dress.

Lily grabbed my hand, giggling. "I know you picked one already, but I thought you might change your mind. So, I brought the whole lineup. Want me to model them for you?"

It wasn't even subtle—she was daring me.

The staff started whispering.

"She's trying on dresses for someone else? Rich people are wild. What's next, testing the husband too?"

"Please, don't you remember Mr. Schubert cozying up to her? Love's just a joke to these people."

I caught every word. Lily leaned in, voice low.

"Wanna know how Bryson gets 'cozy' with me? Why didn't you just stay gone? Why come back and wreck my life? You think you deserve any of this?"

Then she waved the staff off, leaving all the dresses behind like some kind of flex.

I had no idea what Lily was up to.

The room was crowded, but she got way too close. My gut twisted.

Then—bam—she slammed her hand down on my wound, smirking.

"Hurts, doesn't it? Good. You really thought kidnappers took your kidney? Nah. Bryson made the call. He wanted to save me, so he took it from you without a second thought. That love you were so obsessed with? It was always mine. If you've got any sense left, you'll crawl away and stay gone. Next time, I might go for something else."

Blood soaked my hand, hot and fast.

Lily pressed harder, still grinning like a psycho. "Didn't think anyone could be this dumb."

Bryson was practically begging Robin.Dad slammed the table."Love? You think THAT was love—ripping out her kidney, feeding her lies, stabbing her in the back? My daughter was FINE before your 'LOVE' blew her life to pieces. Bryson Schubert, your so-called love is worth less than dirt."Bryson went stiff. He hadn't realized Robin had him on speaker.Everyone heard. Including me.I used to dream about marrying him. Thought he loved me.Now? I just wanted him to burn.Robin got it. Her voice turned ice-cold."Bryson Schubert, instead of groveling, maybe think about what it means to illegally rip out someone's organ. And that fake, stuck-up girl next to you? The one who pretended to be sick to steal my sister's kidney? You might wanna ask if she's ready for what's coming."None of this was buried. A couple clicks and the truth would blow wide open. Robin didn't even have to try.But that one lie cost me a kidney. And Bryson still had the guts to talk about love.***Thud.Br

Mom's eyes were puffy from crying. The second she saw me, she almost collapsed.Dad looked calm, but his hands—tucked into his sleeves—were shaking hard."My baby."When Mom hugged me, I finally broke.Robin laid out everything—my condition, what they did to me.My parents' faces kept cycling through rage."They're monsters. How could they do this to my Kayla? We're not letting this slide."They dove into every way to take Bryson down.I just listened, crushed with regret—but yeah, I finally felt safe.***Bryson had just found out the entire Eastwood family had rolled into Crellan City.No way was he about to face them—especially not Kayla. So he told Lily to apologize for him.He still thought Kayla had a soft spot for him. That if he played it right, she'd come running back.Lily shot that down fast. She hadn't shown her face in high society since the last disaster. One more apology? No thanks."Bryson, the Eastwoods don't even live here. They're not actually gonna go

Bryson stumbled back, rattled.Lily's fake smile shattered under the weight of her own jealousy."That's not possible... Kayla Eastwood can't be THAT Eastwood," she muttered, going pale. The name. The high-society whispers. The Eastwoods—two daughters, one son. Robin, the powerhouse. Our brother, the rising political star. And the youngest? Always kept low-key, rumored to be the favorite.Yeah. That was me."Ms. Eastwood, this is all a big misunderstanding. You're Kayla's sister, right? I just wanted to throw her a grand engagement party."Bryson was the first to recover, scrambling to sound in control as he stepped toward Robin. His voice barely registered. I shook my head, panicked. "No... no..."Robin turned away and pulled me into a hug."It's okay. I got you. Don't be scared."Just her being there steadied me.She took one look at me and didn't even flinch. "Bring the car around," she told her assistant.Didn't spare Bryson a glance—dude was invisible.Nobody likes

"Hand over Kayla."Lily acted like she was in charge, but everyone froze.Even Bryson, all smug a second ago, dropped his gaze.He knew exactly where those bodyguards came from—and what it meant that Robin was Eastwood Corp's CEO. He never planned to tick her off unless things got desperate."Wait, that's her? Robin Eastwood—the iron-blooded CEO from Seaport? She's legend. I heard she got invited to this party, but I thought it was just gossip.""And Bryson's little side chick thinks she can square up to Robin? Please. Look at the difference—it's laughable.""Bullied a helpless girl and got busted by Robin Eastwood herself... this party's officially a disaster."Whispers flew through Crellan's elite crowd. To them, I was nothing—just some disposable girl. Maybe they pitied me, but none of them were about to mess with the Schuberts over it.But Robin was different—one of the rare women at the top.Whispers flew. Bryson shrank by the second. Guests started slipping out, not wan

"Kayla. It really is you."Robin.I hadn't seen her in forever, but she held me like she never let go. Her face was stone cold, fury radiating off her."Robin."Tears slipped down my cheeks as she touched my face, then wrapped her jacket around me."Don't be scared. I'm here. I found you. God, what have they done to you..." Her voice cracked. I stopped shaking and melted into her arms."Kayla, what kind of shameless woman are you?" Bryson's voice cut through from behind. "Already throwing yourself at another guy? Is anyone off-limits now? You disgust me."I flinched. That fear I thought I'd buried came rushing back.Robin's arms tightened around me. She gently rubbed my back, then lifted her head. She always kept her hair short, sharp—part of her whole boss vibe. With her tall frame, she could've passed for a guy at a glance. But the second she looked up, everyone knew exactly who she was.Bryson's face shifted. "Ms. Eastwood? What a surprise. That's my fiancée you're holdin

Click. The door opened, and it felt like a lifeline.Lily glanced at the blood on her hand and bit down on her own arm.Bryson stepped in just as Lily started fake-crying, soaked in my blood. "Kayla, please don't be mad. If you're still upset, bite me again."Cue the waterworks—Bryson lost it.He slapped me."I've told you—stop picking on Lily. She hasn't done anything. If you're gonna act insane, leave. This hospital isn't for you."The guy who used to beam the second I walked in? Now he couldn't wait to kick me out.All because I "hurt" Lily."Apologize," he snapped. "Or maybe I'll show you how it feels to get bitten."His voice went ice cold.I lowered my head and muttered a sorry.***Time crawled by. Then came the big day—my discharge and our engagement. The makeup team showed up early. They styled my hair, did my face, but kept glancing at the scar on my waist. It looked like a nasty centipede crawling across my skin."All done. Let's get you into your dress."T
