Chapter 2

Penulis: Perfect Timing
It turned out that Liam thought all my suffering was merely a charade—that I was faking it just to contend with Tina for things that were, in fact, rightfully mine.

I stared at the blood on my hands and let out a bitter laugh. I remembered how, when Tina had simply twisted her ankle during P.E., Liam, being her homeroom teacher, had instantly dropped everything and abandoned all the other students to carry her to the ambulance waiting by the school gates.

He didn't even bat an eye when he nearly got hit by a car, as all his attention was on Tina, his darling sister. How could he ignore me now, his biological sister, after I had been pushed down the stairs and was bleeding profusely from my head?

Just yesterday, at the Johnson residence, I refused to relinquish my guaranteed university admission spot to Tina, causing my father, Henry Johnson, to slap me hard across the face. "You're clearly bad to the bone, always stealing what belongs to your sister! You ought to have been left to die in that godforsaken countryside!"

Karen, meanwhile, held Tina tightly, comforting her while scolding me. "Tina almost gave up on life because of what you did. You're indebted to her for the rest of your life."

Liam's reaction back then was exactly as it was at that moment. He merely looked at me with utter contempt and revulsion before turning away to softly console Tina.

I looked up. Fighting back tears, I fixed my gaze on Liam, the one who was supposed to be my biological brother.

I then declared defiantly, "You're absolutely right about that. I'm indeed putting on an act! I'm obviously the biological daughter of the Johnson family, so I'm just taking back what's rightfully mine! What does it matter that Tina stole my guaranteed spot at the university? I'm smarter than her, so I'll always be better than her!"

I had kept those thoughts inside me for a long time. I had longed to say them aloud countless times, but I had always been too afraid that saying them would diminish the tiny bit of love they had. I had endured it all—even when Tina bullied me, cut my hair, burned my books, poured filthy water on me, or even spread rumors that I had cheated in my exams.

I had always put up with everything, desperately hoping to earn even a fleeting glance from my parents and Liam. Yet, now, Tina, bathed in their affection, had stripped me of everything. I could no longer tolerate it.

Liam's face clouded over when he heard me speak. Once praised as the kindest in the whole school, he now looked like he was about to yell at me.

Just then, Tina, dressed in a pink ball gown, hurried to the scene. As her gaze swept over my messy appearance, she barely hid her triumphant smirk. Still, she was clearly worried that the other students would learn that I was the real heiress of the Johnson family. So, she quickly interjected, stopping Liam. "It's obvious that Kiara is just jealous of me, Liam. I'm certain that she doesn't actually harbor any malice…"

Having said that, she gently helped me up, putting on an act of deep concern as she continued, "Why are you lying here, Kiara? I know that it's tough that you were exposed for cheating. But honestly, Mom and Dad can't bail you out of this one. I know you had it hard in the countryside, but that doesn't excuse you from trying to cheat your way in."

Tina's remarks instantly stirred an uproar among the onlookers, causing their disdain for me to become even more pronounced.

In the meantime, Liam, spurred on by Tina's remarks, glared at me with utter contempt as he said, "Tina is being so magnanimous toward you, Kiara. You'd better get up now and stop embarrassing yourself in front of everyone!"

I gazed at the people before me, a profound disgust welling up inside me, especially at Tina's blatant hypocrisy. I had resisted letting her lay a hand on me, yet for some reason, my own hand ended up brushing against her.

Tina abruptly fell backward to the ground. Her face was a mask of fear. Tears streamed down her face as she said, "I know you're upset with me, Kiara, but how could you resort to violence?"

I was still completely stunned when a resounding slap landed hard on my face. The impact immediately caused my head wound, which had barely stopped bleeding, to start flowing again.

"You're truly a vile creature, Kiara! I ought to have let you die back in the countryside! How dare you lay a hand on Tina!" Karen bellowed.

Upon noticing the Johnsons' attention on me, Tina bit her lip before grabbing Henry's arm and tugging. She said, "I know I messed up this time, and I finally understand how much Kiara has suffered, Dad. Can you please talk to Kiara and ask her not to hold a grudge against you and Mom? I just want us all to be a happy family again."Yet, this time, her attempt to sow discord didn't succeed.Karen slapped her hard across the face and bellowed, "You bitch! I finally see it now. This is all your doing! If you hadn't stirred up conflict, Kiara wouldn't have endured such a miserable life for all these years!"Tina's eyes widened in disbelief as she exclaimed, "Dad! Liam! Has Mom lost her mind?"Henry and Liam, however, paid her no mind at that moment.Henry looked at me and said, "I truly realize my mistake this time, Kiara. Can you please come home so that I can make everything up to you?"Liam nodded repeatedly, saying, "I had been deceived by Tina all along. I'll send her back to th

It wasn't long before the competition results were published. It absolutely floored everyone. I had clinched first place, while Zachary landed in second. Those who had previously branded me a cheat and wished me ill instantly shifted their stance, now showering me with praise. In a complete turn of events, Tina, formerly always in first place, was surprisingly dead last, with a score so abysmal that it left everyone stunned. I held my scholarship and touched my injured arm as I arrived at the Johnson residence. I then overheard a commotion from within the Johnson residence. Liam yelled, "Why, exactly, were you in my office the evening before the exam, Tina?"Tina, however, remained silent, her eyes welled up with unshed tears. She then looked pleadingly at Karen and Henry, only to find that neither of them responded to her pleadings. It was clear that the Johnsons valued a brilliant daughter, not one who resorted to cheating. In addition, given that they had reviewed the surve

Those back in Riverside High School had given me a space of my own. It was pretty run-down and basic, but at least Tina couldn't shut off the electricity, claiming that it was disrupting her sleep.I was fully immersed in my studies here as I prepared for the competition. It was the only way I could prove that I hadn't cheated. I was determined to outperform Tina.In what felt like no time, a fortnight had passed, and the competition commenced.I headed to Evergreen High School with the others during winter break to complete our papers.I did see Tina there, just as I expected. Yet, instead of paying any attention to me, her gaze was fixed, almost mesmerized, on something or someone behind me.It was by the window, where a good-looking man's face seemed to shimmer faintly in the soft sunlight. Zachary caught me looking at him, so he nodded slightly in my direction and flashed a radiant smile. His thick glasses couldn't even conceal the brilliance in his gaze. It wasn't until Tin

I wiped away my tears and made my way back to the Johnson residence to gather my belongings.I figured that even if they didn't allow me to take my few items of clothing and a blanket, I wouldn't fight it. I only wanted to take my notebooks, containing Ms. Zimmerman's invaluable mathematical problem-solving approaches, with me.She had personally compiled seven entire notebooks of relevant information for me since she was aware of my passion for mathematics and my limited educational resources. Those notebooks were what got me through those three years that felt like an absolute nightmare.Yet, when I stepped back into the Johnson residence, the sight before me instantly dragged me back into despair. Although the entire place was spotless and orderly, my room alone lay in complete disarray.Tina, with her husky in her arms, looked at me with what seemed like an apologetic expression. "I'm so sorry, Kiara. I genuinely had no idea that Hiccup would despise your belongings to such a

It was indeed as Tina had claimed. I had sought out older men. I didn't seek them out to sell myself, though. I was actually signing up for a competition. I deliberately kept it hidden from Liam, knowing that he would undoubtedly, and obstinately, accuse me of cheating and deem me unfit to participate.I approached Riverside High School, using my first-place competition standing as leverage to gain entry. I knew that there was a fierce rivalry between my high school and Evergreen High School. Thus, despite my somewhat tarnished reputation, following an immediate evaluation of my knowledge, the principal of Riverside High School accepted me without hesitation and promptly enrolled me in the mathematics competition.I had once believed that my high school years would forever be overshadowed by Tina, with no hope of escape. Yet, I never realized that by breaking free from the Johnson family and working to make my mark independently, I could forge my own future. Those at Riverside Hig

I held my posture, aiming to interact with them as an equal, not as someone in their debt.It seemed like my declaration had caused my parents to fall silent. They simply stared at me, leaving me rather perplexed. Why weren't they yelling or striking me? Why couldn't they accept me severing ties with them? Hadn't they always made it clear that I wasn't their daughter? I tried to call them "Dad" and "Mom" back then, only to be told to keep quiet to avoid upsetting Tina. Why were they suddenly reluctant now that I was finally severing ties with them?I continued, "I'll be transferring the 60 thousand dollars to you right away, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson. I expect you to uphold your end of the bargain and allow me to formally sever all ties with the Johnson family."It seemed like my statement had caught Karen off guard. It wasn't long ago that even her physical and verbal abuse couldn't stop me from trying to call her "Mom". Yet, the fact that I now addressed her as "Mrs. Johnson" clearly
