Chapter 2

Autor: Pork Belly Fan
My father flew into a rage and smacked me across the forehead.

"Watch your mouth! Family is family!

"Aunt Janice already said that as long as Kelsey has a glamorous honeymoon, she'll earn her place in Travis's family.

"Travis owns a building materials company. Once Kelsey comes back from Europe, she'll be living the life of a wealthy wife. If they let a little money slip through their fingers, it'd be enough to support you for the rest of your life.

"You ungrateful brat! You don't understand a thing about how the world works!"

Just then, my phone chimed. Aunt Janice had sent a voice message to the family group chat.

"As a younger brother, Wayne really knows how to look after me.

"Elise, thank you for giving Kelsey the trip. You're single anyway, so the ticket would've gone to waste. When Kelsey gets back, I'll have her bring you some chocolates from Europe."

The rest of the family quickly chimed in.

Duane: "Wayne handled this well. Elise's being a good daughter, too."

Pamela: "Exactly. It's only one trip. Elise's still young. She can earn the money to visit Europe herself someday."

I let out a cold laugh and typed into the group chat.

"If that's how everyone feels, then my father's surgery costs $320,000. There are four of your households, so how about each of you chips in $80,000?"

Then I sent another message.

"Kelsey, you stole my redemption code without my permission. You should be grateful I haven't called the police.

"I thought your husband was the rich heir who gives you $30,000 a month just for spending money. Why can't he even afford an $80,000 honeymoon?

"You have thirty minutes to cancel the booking. After that, don't blame me for what happens next."

The chat went completely silent.

Three seconds later, Aunt Janice called.

The moment I answered, her scream nearly burst my eardrum.

"You little brat! What the hell do you think you're doing? Your father already promised Kelsey the trip, and now you're trying to take it back? Not happening!

"Wayne has listened to me his whole life. If you dare go back on this, I'll disown him as my brother.

"He'll be so furious it'll kill him, and you'll spend the rest of your life as the daughter who drove her own father to his grave!"

My hands trembled with anger. She knew perfectly well how serious my father's condition was, yet she still threw around threats like that.

Did she care about his life at all?

"And besides, Kelsey already registered the redemption code under her name. It's too late to cancel now. We're family. If you keep causing trouble, don't blame us when you're the one crying later."

I turned to look at my father. To my disbelief, he nodded eagerly and spoke into the phone.

"Janice, don't be angry. Don't waste your breath arguing with this stubborn girl. I'll handle it. She's my daughter. She can't possibly defy me."

The last shred of hope inside me shattered.

I hung up, then immediately called the travel agency.

"Hello. My name is Elise Whitmore. I'm the prize winner. My ID number is...

"My redemption code was stolen. I want the prize frozen immediately."

The customer service representative remained polite. "Certainly, Ms. Whitmore. We've verified your prize information.

"To freeze the reservation, you'll need to bring your original ID to one of our branch offices in person. If you complete the process before ten o'clock tomorrow morning, we'll be able to cancel the booking. After that, the authorization will be considered valid."

I ended the call without sparing my father another glance.

Back in my room, I reached for my ID, which I'd hidden. It was gone.

My heart sank. I searched every corner of the room. My passport was gone too.

I spun around.

My father was leaning against the doorframe with a smug smile.

"Looking for your ID? Your Aunt Janice knew you'd make trouble. While you were in the shower, I didn't just take your phone. I gave Kelsey your ID and passport, too."

My father's entire body shook violently. Tears streamed from the corners of his eyes.Watching him fall apart filled me with a deep sense of satisfaction. The sister he'd spent his life protecting and trying to please had treated him as nothing more than a stepping stone and a fool to exploit."Travis hired a lawyer and visited Kelsey in jail. He's suing to have the marriage annulled for fraud and demanding she return every penny he spent on the wedding."So much for that honeymoon in Europe. She'll be spending the next few years making prison uniforms instead. Room and board are included."I patted my father's stiff, ice-cold cheek."Dad, are you happy now? The only grandson you were so desperate for is probably one of Kelsey's ex-boyfriend's."My father's eyes widened until they looked ready to burst. His mouth opened as he struggled to reach for me, but all he could do was twitch beneath the blanket."S-Save… Save me..."I stood up and dusted off my hands. "The court has al

A dull thud echoed through the air. It was followed by screams from the ground below.I walked to the window and looked down. My father hit the first-floor awning like a sack of garbage before rolling onto the lawn.Blood streamed down his face. He wasn't dead.A fall from the second floor, cushioned by the grass, wasn't enough to kill him. But his heart—already ninety percent blocked—finally gave out from the impact and the shock. The ambulance arrived with sirens blaring.Outside the emergency room, I sat quietly in a plastic chair, the stack of payment receipts still clutched in my hand.A doctor came rushing out, drenched in sweat, holding a critical condition notice."The patient has suffered a massive heart attack along with a burst fracture of the lumbar spine. He needs emergency bypass surgery and spinal reconstruction immediately."A family member needs to sign the consent forms and pay the deposit. The preliminary estimate is half a million dollars."Half a million d

"Sigh, what kind of life is this?"My father turned toward the cameras, putting on a pitiful act. "My own daughter is trying to destroy my sister and niece over a little money! Why can't families just take care of each other?"Then he whipped around and glared at me. "Elise, let me tell you something. I've been tired of living for a long time. If you still think of me as your father, you'll drop the charges. If you don't, I'll jump."You can spend the rest of your life carrying the guilt of driving your own father to his death."The crowd erupted instantly. Accusing stares cut into me like knives. An older woman livestreaming the scene shoved her phone toward my face."Everyone, take a good look. This is the ungrateful daughter who drove her own father to suicide. So what if your relatives borrowed a little money? Did you really have to call the police? Parents are never wrong. Get on your knees and apologize to your father before it's too late."Others quickly joined in."She'

It didn't take long before Uncle Gordon Sutton showed up at the county hospital with a group of people."Wayne, you ungrateful bastard!" He pointed at my father, who was lying in the hospital bed, and unleashed a torrent of abuse."Your daughter's the one who got Janice and Kelsey arrested, and you're hiding out here instead of doing something about it?""I'm telling you right now. Make Elise drop the charges. Or I'll break your legs."My father shrank back against the bed, trembling. He looked at Uncle Gordon and pleaded through his tears."Please... that $50,000 was supposed to pay for my surgery. Just give it back. I'll return it to Elise, and she'll withdraw the case."Uncle Gordon grabbed my father by the collar. The muscles in his thick face twitched with anger."Give the money back? Dream on! Kelsey already spent it buying gifts for her mother-in-law. The money's gone."If you don't make her drop the charges, when you die, no one from the Whitmores will even attend your

"If you don't have bypass surgery immediately, you could suffer a fatal heart attack at any moment!"That European vacation wasn't for me. I got down on my knees and begged the travel company to let me cash out the $80,000 prize because you needed lifesaving heart surgery."Combined with the $50,000 I'd saved, that made $130,000. I was supposed to pay for your surgery first thing tomorrow morning!"I worked a full-time job during the day and took side jobs every night. I nearly worked myself to death to save that money!"And what did you do? You traded your own chance to live just so your niece could pretend to be some rich socialite!"The mediation room fell deathly silent. My father stared at the payment estimate in my hand, his eyes wide as if he'd seen a ghost. "Y-You... what did you just say? You turned that trip into money for my surgery?"I let out a cold laugh. "What else did you think? You really thought someone working three jobs a day and barely able to afford a decen

I calmly pulled a stack of documents from my bag and laid them on the table."Officer, these are my annual physical examinations and psychological evaluations. They prove that I don't have any mental health issues."And there's more."I took out my phone and opened the security camera app."I installed high-definition cameras throughout the house in case my father ever had a sudden heart attack. Everything that happened tonight, from eight o'clock until now, was recorded."I tapped "play", and the footage began playing, crystal clear."There he is. Wayne Whitmore, going through my phone like a thief before transferring $50,000 out of my bank account without my permission."The video showed my father slapping me across the face.Instead of treating my injury afterward, he snuck into my room, took a small notebook, and handed it to Aunt Janice downstairs. Then he pulled out his own phone and used the banking information he'd found to transfer the money out of my account. The evi
