Caterina.

I stood before the canvas as if rooted in place.

This definitely wasn't the most expensive piece in the room... I could tell that from the way the museum goers passed it by without lingering, as though its worth had already been measured and found... modest.

It wasn't like that for me.

There was just something about it. The muted golds, the faint brush strokes layered over one another, the quiet melancholy in the painted woman’s eyes... something about it kept drawing me in.

The gallery was quiet, save for that occasional shuffle of feet and the polite murmurs of wealthy patrons who had nothing better to do on a Thursday afternoon than pretend they understood the art.

I tilted my head to the side, letting my eyes trace the soft edges of the woman's jawline in the panting. There was even subtle shadows that made it look like she was about to tell you a secret... if one could only get close enough.

I was so obsessed with that particular painting that I didn't notice it until

Caterina"May I kiss you?"Alessandro’s eyes were warm when he asked the question, expectant of an answer. He was waiting for me to give him the permission he needed."I..."I almost did it. I could feel the words forming on my tongue... the damned yes... when a sharp sound came from his pocket. He sighed, apologetic as always, and stepped aside to answer.Fuck.That was close. That was so close.I sat back against the velvet chair, my pulse still at an all time high, but now joined by this feeling of... guilt? Was I truly about to kiss Alessandro? Of all people. I mean, yes, I knew I wasn't with anyone and all that, but I truly wasn't going to kiss Alessandro because he had showed he could be a decent person for a few minutes, now, was I?That man had once called me a whore. Nope, I didn't want a single part of him or him at all. The moment he came back here, I would tell the guy that I wasn't interested in whatever it was he was playing at.I'd make it very clear.Yeah...He returne

Caterina.I was not expecting Luca.Yeah, I had been expecting him to be the one who had pulled off such an elaborate prank or whatever it was Alessandro pulled. I was not expecting to see the man at my house, dressed like this was also his place, and asking me questions like he was my damn husband or some shit like that. His lips were set in a straight line, and he wasn't even blinking."Where are you coming from, Caterina?" He asked the question for a second time, more daring than the first.I tightened my hand on my clutch, and stared straight back at him. "Excuse me?""Do not play whatever games you are already thinking about in that head of yours, Caterina." His voice was quiet, but it had that low, razor-edged quality that made my skin prickle. "Where. The. Fuck. Were. You. Coming. From?"That was none of his fucking business.I slipped my heels off, one at a time, making sure I took my time with each heel. "That's none of your business, Luca. I'm not a child in need of some car

CaterinaAnthonia’s reply came way faster than I'd expected. I had barely hit send on the portfolio when my phone buzzed.Anthonia: Got it. I love the layout of it all. By the way, my brother is now in town. I know you'll have a swell time during the dinner he organised for both of you tomorrow. Here is his number.I stared at the text for a solid two minutes, my thumb hovering over the keyboard. At this point in time, I wasn't really in the mood for any sort of blind date or guide or whatever it was Anthonia wanted to do. But business was business, and this was my price to pay for such a good deal. And I really couldn't say no to someone like Anthonia. That would be suicidal.I typed back, "Alright. Tomorrow works for me."She sent me back a thumbs up and the number. No more details.Good or not, Anthonia was still a bitch.***Without Luca to disturb my thoughts, I spent most of my time getting ready for the evening, though I tried my best to keep it simple. Black dress... knee len

LucaCaterina’s gasp was as soft as she was, yet it sliced through the air like a sharp blade.I heard it, felt it in the tightening of my own chest, and then my eyes skid lazily toward Alessandro, who now held the mask in his hand, his posture much more arrogant than what I had remembered.Yeah, he had changed. In more ways than one, it seemed."Fiancée?"I didn't speak the word aloud, but my lips shaped it slowly, deliberately, making sure each syllable dripped out with the disbelief I felt, and insult. How dare he?My eyes never left the bastard's face, holding him there as though the man were something stuck to the bottom of my shoe.Last I heard of Alessandro, before going to Prague and all, was at that meeting one year ago. I had told this man that he had nothing to do with Caterina ever again, and he should never come close to her, in almost those terms. And he didn't listen.Just like Caterina had made a name for herself in New York, Alessandro had found himself in some hole

CaterinaThe penthouse was even more magnificent than what I'd imagined from Anthonia’s breathless description. It was truly a place for the elite. All clean lines, glass, and unapologetic opulence perched high enough to feel like the city bowed beneath its feet. I stood near the wide glass panels, staring out at New York’s skyline as the early light washed the towers gold. There was always something about arriving early to an event. It gave me the time I needed to breathe, to centre myself before the vultures swooped in... the ones who saw a woman like me as an opportunity or a threat.I had no idea how the three hundred thousand man would see me. I didn't want to take my chances. My hand brushed over the cool marble counter as I strolled the open-plan living area, the sound of my heels clicking softly against the polished floors my only companion. Anthonia had been right. Whoever secured here today would have bragging rights for years.I was halfway through running my palm over
