Absolute, suffocating darkness.

The metallic echo of the intercom fading out was immediately replaced by a new sound. Footsteps. Heavy, rhythmic, and coming from both ends of the stone corridor outside the vault. The click of tactical rifles chambering rounds cut through the pitch black.

A massive, calloused hand brushed against my knuckles.

Reymond.

He didnt grab my wrist. He didnt yank me behind him or issue a territorial command. He simply opened his palm in the dark and waited.

I hesitated. The air in the vault was freezing, but his skin radiated a furnace-like heat. I listened to the boots getting closer. The hounds were coming.

I reached out and closed my trembling fingers around his.

His grip tightened instantly. For the first time since he dragged me into that glass elevator, the choice to follow him was entirely mine.

"Move," Reymond breathed quietly.

He pulled me away from the heavy iron door and toward the back of the underground archive. His night vision was vastly superior to mine, his wolf guiding us flawlessly through the maze of steel cabinets.

"How did he get in?" I whispered, my sneakers completely silent on the stone floor. "You said the chateau was a fortress."

"It is," Reymond replied, stopping at the rear wall. His hands felt along the damp brick. "Mauris didnt breach the gates. Aubert brought him in under a diplomatic banner, and someone inside my own security network killed the grid. Thats why the alarms didn't trip until they were already inside."

He found what he was looking for. A heavy, hidden latch scraped, and a narrow section of the wall swung inward, revealing a damp, narrow tunnel smelling of earth and old copper.

"Aubert wants you dead," I said, following him into the narrow passage.

"Aubert wants my throne," Reymond corrected, pulling the fake wall shut behind us. "Mauris wants you. This isn't an assassination attempt, Natalia. It's an extraction."

The reality of his words hit me like a physical blow. Mauris didn't come to kill the Alpha of the Smith Syndicate. He came to take his property back.

We ran. The tunnels beneath the chateau were a labyrinth of uneven stone and dripping water. Behind us, the muffled sound of a heavy explosive charge detonated, shaking the dirt from the ceiling. They had blown the vault door.

"They have our scent," I gasped, my lungs burning as we took a sharp left turn.

"They have mine," Reymond said flatly. "Your royal scent is masking yours now that you're off the pills. But there are too many of them to fight in a chokepoint like this. We need to reach the lower armoury."

We rounded another corner and slammed to a halt.

A massive pair of solid bronze doors blocked the tunnel. There was no handle, no keyhole, and no keypad. Just a smooth expanse of tarnished metal covered in ancient, faded wolf-runes.

Reymond swore violently under his breath. He stepped up to the bronze and shoved against it with all his unnatural strength. The metal didn't even groan.

"It's a dead end," I panicked, looking back over my shoulder into the dark tunnel. The sound of boots splashing through the puddles was getting louder. "Reymond, they're right behind us."

"It's not a dead end, it's a blood-seal," he growled, stepping back. "Its old territory magic. Only the original bloodline of the mountain can open it."

I looked at the doors. Then I looked at my right hand.

The deep cut across my palm from the gold fountain pen had scabbed over, but my skin was still tight and painful. Without thinking, I stepped past Reymond and pressed my injured palm flat against the centre of the cold bronze doors.

Nothing happened.

"It needs fresh blood," Reymond said.

I didn't hesitate. I dug the fingernail of my left hand directly into the scab, ripping it open. A sharp hiss of pain escaped my teeth as warm blood welled up and smeared across the ancient metal.

The runes flared with a sudden, blinding silver light.

Deep within the stone floor, heavy gears ground together with a deafening screech. The bronze doors split down the middle and slowly retracted into the walls, kicking up a massive cloud of dust.

Reymond grabbed my shoulder and pulled me inside. The doors instantly slammed shut behind us, locking with a definitive, heavy boom that cut off the sound of the approaching footsteps entirely.

We were in a massive, circular cavern. Faint, glowing crystals embedded in the high ceiling provided a dim, blue-tinted light. The room was an ancient armoury, lined with racks of rusted swords, old tactical gear, and crumbling leather-bound documents.

But it was the far wall that made the breath catch in my throat.

A massive, floor-to-ceiling fresco was painted directly onto the stone. It depicted a violent, bloody battle between monstrous wolves and men. At the very centre of the mural stood a woman wrapped in a silver cloak, a golden crown resting in her dark hair. Her hands were raised, white lightning arcing from her fingertips.

I walked slowly toward the mural. My heart hammered against my ribs.

The woman in the painting didn't just share my hair colour or my build. She had my exact face. My eyes. My jawline.

"That's the first Walker Luna," Reymond said quietly, coming up behind me. "The one who united the northern territories. The bloodline is a direct genetic copy. It doesn't dilute."

I stared at the woman's face, feeling incredibly small. All my life, I just wanted to be normal. I just wanted to disappear. But my own biology was an ancient, flashing beacon that I could never outrun.

A loud, metallic bang echoed from the bronze doors behind us.

They had found us.

"They can't get in," Reymond said, though his eyes darted toward the sealed exit. "Not without heavy explosives. But we can't stay out in the open."

He grabbed my hand again and pulled me toward a small, recessed alcove hidden behind a collapsed stone pillar in the corner of the cavern. It was tiny. Barely large enough for one person, let alone an Apex Alpha and myself.

Reymond pressed his back against the stone, pulling me in closely in front of him. The space was so tight my chest was flushed flat against his. The overwhelming scent of dark cedar and winter frost wrapped around me, battling the smell of old dust. I could feel the heavy, rapid thud of his heart against my cheek.

We stood there in absolute silence, listening to the muffled shouts and the scraping of metal against the bronze doors outside.

My adrenaline was crashing again. The fear, the running, the constant terror of the last few hours settled heavily on my shoulders. I looked up at Reymond in the dim blue light.

His jaw was locked, his silver eyes watching the doors with lethal focus. His hands were resting on my waist. Not gripping. Not possessing. Just resting there, offering a quiet, solid anchor in a world that was falling apart.

"Reymond," I whispered.

He looked down at me.

"If we survive this," I said, my voice barely audible over the banging on the doors. "If we get out of this mountain... I'm still leaving."

He didn't flinch. He didn't tighten his grip on my waist or growl a territorial threat.

He just looked at me, his eyes entirely soft and completely devastating.

"I know," he replied quietly.

The answer unsettled me more than anything else he could have said. It completely threw me off balance. For the first time, he wasn't arguing. He wasn't trying to control me or force me into a cage. He was accepting my choice.

I swallowed hard, looking away. My eyes fell onto a low stone pedestal right next to our hiding spot. Resting on top of it was a thick, open scroll covered in the same faded ink I had seen in the archive.

I squinted in the blue light, reading the ancient text aloud in a whisper.

"The Law of the Blood Seal." I frowned, tracing the words. "When a royal heir spills blood to finalize a union, the mate bond is no longer a private pact. It becomes a recognized claim of protection by the ancient ancestors."

I stopped reading. My blood ran completely cold.

I looked up at Reymond. "The contract."

He closed his eyes.

"When I signed the fake mate agreement in your office," I gasped, the pieces finally clicking together. "I cut my hand on your pen. I bled on the paper next to my name."

"Yes," Reymond said heavily.

"It wasn't just a political signature," I realized, panic rising in my chest again. "Because of my royal blood, it triggered the ancient claiming law. Thats why your eyes changed color. Thats why the power shifted in the room."

Reymond nodded slowly. "If the bond is completed, if we consummate it, I become the legally recognized protector of the Walker heir by ancestral law. No council can touch my throne. No faction can challenge my rule."

"And if I reject the bond publicly?" I asked, my voice shaking.

"Then I am officially a usurper," Reymond stated flatly. "I lose the protection of the ancestors. Aubert can legally execute me, and your father can drag you home without breaking a single syndicate treaty."

I stared at him in horror. The fake contract had turned our private arrangement into a loaded political weapon. If I left him, I would essentially be signing his death warrant. And if I stayed... I belonged to him forever.

A massive, deafening explosion rocked the cavern.

The bronze doors didn't just open. They blew completely inward, massive chunks of metal flying across the room and shattering against the stone walls. Dust and smoke flooded the armory.

Reymond stepped completely in front of me, shielding my body with his massive frame, his claws fully extending with a vicious snick.

Through the settling smoke, a dozen syndicate hounds carrying heavy rifles poured into the room, fanning out in a semi-circle around our hiding spot. They didn't shoot. They just aimed their weapons directly at Reymonds chest.

Then, the crowd of soldiers parted.

A tall man with silver hair and a tailored black coat walked slowly into the centre of the cavern. He didn't carry a weapon. He didn't need to. The sheer, suffocating pressure of his aura filled the room, making my lungs seize.

Mauris Walker.

My father.

Reymond let out a demonic, earth-shaking snarl, taking a step forward to rip Mauris apart.

"Hold your fire," Mauris ordered his men casually.

He didn't look at Reymond. He looked directly past his broad shoulders, locking his cold, pale eyes right onto mine.

I froze. My entire body locked up in absolute terror. Seven years of running, and the monster had finally caught me.

But Mauris didn't sneer. He didn't order his men to drag me away.

Instead, he slowly lowered himself to the stone floor. He placed his right fist over his heart, and bowed his head.

He knelt.

"My princess," Mauris said, his voice echoing in the silent cavern.

I stared at him, my mind completely short-circuiting. The tyrant who had slaughtered his own pack, who had hunted me for seven years, was kneeling at my feet.

"What are you doing?" I choked out, my voice cracking.

Mauris looked up at me. A strange, twisted smile pulled at the corner of his mouth.

"I came to bring you home, Natalia," he said softly. "Because your mother never died that night."

"Liar."The word barely made it past my lips. My throat felt like it was lined with shattered glass. I stared down at the man who had terrorized my entire existence, unable to process the words he had just spoken."You're lying," I repeated, my voice growing louder, echoing off the stone walls of the armoury. "I saw the estate burn. I saw the blood on the snow. She died trapping your men inside!"Mauris didn't flinch. He stayed on his knee, looking up at me with an eerie, composed calmness that terrified me more than his anger ever could. Slowly, he reached into the inner breast pocket of his tailored black coat.Reymond shifted instantly, a low snarl vibrating in his chest as his claws extended."Peace, Alpha," Mauris said smoothly, keeping his movements deliberate. "I carry no weapons."He pulled his hand free and opened his palm. Resting in the centre of his black leather glove was a heavy piece of solid silver, carved into th

I didn't knock.I pushed the heavy oak doors of Reymonds private library open so hard they shuddered against the stone walls. He was standing by the massive stone fireplace, a glass of amber liquid in his hand. He had discarded his jacket. In just a dark grey shirt and black trousers, he looked too large for the refined room, like a caged apex predator waiting for the bars to break. He turned at the noise, his silver eyes locking onto me.I didn't hesitate. I walked straight up to his sprawling mahogany desk and slammed the crumpled, singed photograph onto the polished wood."Explain this," I demanded. The war room fell into a suffocating, breathless silence. My pulse hammered so violently against my throat I thought the elders could hear it.Reymond didn't hesitate. His hand closed around my wrist, his grip iron-tight but strangely careful not to bruise, and he pulled me firmly behind his broad back. We moved as one, striding out of the vaulted chamber and into the grand main hall that overlooked the courtyard. My stomach twisted into sharp, cold knots. I braced myself to look down and see my fathers brutal grey hounds tearing the iron gates off their hinges. The heavy gates groaned open, scraping against the frozen cobblestones. But it wasn't Mauris Walker.A sleek convoy of black, heavy-duty vehicles rolled smoothly into the snow-covered courtyard. The men stepping out of the cars didn't wear the silver crown of my father's pack. They wore heavy grey coats tailored to military perfection, and on their shoulders sat the insignia of a coiled se

A low, deep vibration rattled the floorboards beneath my feet. I opened my eyes in the dark. It wasn't the wind howling off the Alpine peaks. It was wolves. Dozens of them, their voices rising together in a raw, haunting chorus that made the glass panes of my window rattle. The memory of the courtyard hit me like a physical blow. The freezing air. The violent withdrawal. The exact second my chemical barrier completely shattered, blasting my royal scent into the mountain night.I threw off the heavy fur blankets and ran to the window. My bare feet slapped against the freezing stone floor. I pressed my hands against the frosted glass and looked down.Every single guard in the courtyard was on one knee in the snow. They weren't moving. They were bowing toward my tower, completely subdued by the aura I couldn't hide anymore. Then I saw him.Reymond stood in the dead centre of the courtyard. The tires of the armoured SUV screamed against the wet asphalt as we hurled around another blind hairpin turn. Outside the heavy, bulletproof glass, the jagged black peaks of the Swiss Alps rose like crooked teeth against a starless sky.Inside, the cabin was a pressure cooker. The air was thick with the smell of hot leather, heavy diesel, and the crushing, suffocating weight of Reymond Smith sitting less than two feet away from me. My chest felt hollow, like someone had reached inside and carved out my lungs.Adrenaline is a liar. It makes you feel invincible right up until the moment it leaves your system, and when mine burned out, the crash was brutal. My head throbbed in time with the roar of the engine. The rapid climb in altitude was pressing against my eardrums, but it was the Apex Alpha sitting beside me that was actually making my blood boil. The sheer heat radiating off his body was unreal.
