Chapter 4

Author: Corn 88
Brandon's POV

The lingering effects of the hurricane persisted, and it was still pouring madly outside.

Timmy's fluctuating fever suddenly turned into a febrile seizure at 3:00 pm. He wouldn't stop convulsing violently. His little face turned bluish-purple, his eyes rolled to the back of his head, and he couldn't even cry out.

"Timmy? Timmy! Don't scare me, please!"

I panicked completely. My hands and feet turned ice-cold, and I frantically dialed 911 to send out an ambulance. However, I was told that all ambulances were dispatched because of the severe weather, and the earliest one would only arrive at least 40 minutes later.

However, 40 minutes was way too long and fatal for a newborn baby with a febrile seizure.

I shakily called Taylor again. This time, she picked up.

When she heard about Timmy's seizure, she also got a huge shock and said shakily, "Don't worry, honey! I'm driving back at once! Wrap Timmy up in a rug for now. I'll meet you at the apartment building entrance!"

Ten minutes later, I wrapped the convulsing Timmy tightly in my raincoat and gritted through my injured leg as I scrambled down the stairs.

Taylor's car was already running. I had only just opened the passenger door and hadn't even gotten in when her phone started ringing again on the dashboard.

It was George again.

Taylor instinctively answered the call and connected it to the car's Bluetooth speaker.

"Tay! Help! I'm going to get electrocuted!"

George wouldn't stop shouting frantically on the call. "I just went to get some water earlier and slipped and fell, and I think I broke my leg! I can't get up! The flood's reaching the outlets in the wall, and sparks are already flying everywhere! I'm going to die of electrocution! Save me!"

Taylor gripped the steering wheel so hard that her knuckles turned white. She then braked hard suddenly in the middle of the road. We'd barely even made it out to the corner of the apartment building.

I glared at her intensely and grabbed her arm. My tears finally gushed forth as I begged, almost pitifully, "Taylor! The doctor said that febrile seizures will damage the brain or even kill the baby! Please, I'm begging you, send our son to the hospital first! The hospital's just ten minutes away from here!"

George began screaming even more loudly on the phone. "Tay! The water's reaching me! I'm scared!"

Taylor glanced at the convulsing, ashen-faced Timmy in my arms, and then at the phone screen. She shut her eyes in anguish, struggling with herself for a few seconds.

Then, she turned her steering wheel sharply to the right.

"I'm sorry, Brandon," she said, not daring to look into my eyes. "George might die! But Timmy's seizure will probably just go away on its own. Call the ambulance or stop a car on the roadside. I must go and save George! He's the only family Ryan has left!"

Then, she ignored my pleas, opened my side of the door, and shoved me out of the car.

I knelt in the mud and watched her car disappear down the road heading in the opposite direction, my tears drying on my face.

Strike three.

I didn't call out after her anymore. Instead, I gathered the last of my energy and waded through the mud to the side of the road, desperately flagging down any passing car to give us a ride.

Taylor kept picturing George dying in his apartment from electrocution. She ran two red lights and drove down all the way to the apartment at lightning speed.

The elevator had stopped running, so she ran up 11 floors to George's apartment unit, worried to death that she would only be met with his dead body once she'd arrived.

"George! I'm here, George! I'll save you!"

She was panting heavily by the time she reached the designated floor. Just as she was about to break into the apartment, she suddenly realized that the door wasn't even locked. In fact, it was left slightly ajar.

She wanted to push the door open right away, but she suddenly realized that the smell wafting out wasn't a putrid burning smell of electricity. If anything, it smelled like a rich, buttery, and garlicky sauce.

It smelled like someone had been making steak.

Taylor stood at the door and peered in through the crack. The sight inside plunged her right into an icy abyss.

The apartment was dry and brightly lit. There were no electricity leaks and no sparking electricity outlets.

More importantly, the George who'd just been crying and screaming on the phone about being electrocuted to death just now was happily clinking glasses of red wine with a number of his friends in the dining room as they feasted on their steaks.

"Don't worry and just eat. See, all I need to do is come up with a lie and remind her of the promise she'd made to Tiff, and that idiot will just abandon her baby at the NICU and run all the way to me.

"Women are stupid and easy to manipulate like that. The more you praise them for being loyal and devoted, the more they'll treat you as a saint.

"Taylor will continue being my ATM and free nanny for the rest of her life!"

Brandon's POVSix months later, the storm completely subsided, and time eventually erased all traces of the past.Fortunately, the seizure hadn't left any lasting neurological damage on Timmy. And under my and my parents' meticulous care, he was now a chubby and adorable little baby who could now babble and smile at me all the time.I decided to reapply to further my studies abroad, a dream that I'd once abandoned for the sake of staying close to Taylor. Mom and Dad then told me that they would relocate to Ruisse with me while I studied so they could help take care of Timmy. It was a rare bright and sunny day on the day of our departure. The sun shone in through the glass panels in the airport, warming us up.I pushed the stroller along, chatting and laughing with Mom and Dad as we walked toward the VIP security checkpoint. When I casually looked around, I suddenly caught sight of a familiar figure standing behind the pillar in the airport. It was Taylor. It had only been six m

Brandon's POVTaylor had built her business from scratch. However, it was entirely thanks to my mother's connections and financial guarantees that she was even able to stand firm in such a competitive industry.I never brought up the part about my family's help to Taylor, just to protect her ego. But when I went home with Timmy in my arms and told my parents about everything that happened, including Timmy's near-death, Mom was outraged."A heartless woman like her doesn't deserve to use our resources at all!"She made a few phone calls after that. And, less than a week later, the three largest core suppliers for Taylor's company simultaneously refused to renew their supply contracts for the next six months, citing strategic adjustments. Then, the three-million-dollar working capital loan that Taylor had just successfully negotiated with the bank to fill the company's funding gap was rescinded and rejected in the final review stage. They simply stated that they didn't agree with th

  • Storm Warning: My Wife Runs to Him   Chapter 8

Brandon's POVTaylor collapsed to the floor, burying her face in her hands. I didn't give her a chance to continue pleading with me for mercy and said, "If you don't sign this in three days, I will take the CCTV footage and hospital records proving that you abandoned your critically ill baby to meet your brother-in-law during the hurricane and file for divorce in court."When that happens, and things go out of hand, we'll see how your company's biggest clients think of their supposedly loyal and devoted CEO. You should probably think twice."Taylor knew my character and that I meant serious business. And so, for the sake of what was left of her dignity and to save her precarious reputation at the company, she signed the divorce papers with trembling hands. We would be complete strangers once we got the divorce finalized in court.…I moved back to my parents' with Timmy after everything. However, things only started going south on Taylor's end.Having lost my support and see

Brandon's POVTaylor stared at the divorce papers for a long time, her face turning pale. She shook her head fervently and pushed the papers back to my feet."No! I won't sign it! I will never sign the papers until my death, Brandon!"She looked up at me with bloodshot eyes and made a final attempt at appealing to me."I had also been a victim over the past five years, honey! George had been manipulating me with Tiffany's words. He was the one morally blackmailing me the whole time!"I really thought that he was in great trouble! That's the only reason why… I swear that I've always been loyal to you and Timmy! It's just that I was too sentimental and wanted to take care of them, especially Ryan, on Tiffany's behalf. I did nothing wrong!""Sentimental?"I couldn't stop myself from chuckling coldly at that as though I'd just heard a funny joke.I then crouched down and stared her in the eyes. "Stop blaming someone else for your own faults, Taylor Cochran."Yes, George is a disgu

Brandon's POVI sat quietly on the bench outside the ICU of the Children's General Hospital. Nobody could even tell the original color of the shirt I was wearing anymore. It was stained with mud, rainwater, and blood from Timmy's lips when he bit on them during his convulsions. My leg wound had torn open again from my running in the rain. The bandages had loosened and had mostly unwound from my leg. The wound was festering with yellow pus, but I didn't feel any pain. The elevator doors at the end of the hospital hallway opened with a ding, and Taylor rushed out like a madwoman, stumbling and tripping over her own feet. She eventually slipped and fell on the wet floor before hurriedly scrambling over to me."Brandon! Honey!"She dropped to her knees before me on the hard tiles, her voice trembling uncontrollably as she asked, "Where's Timmy? Where's our son? How is he? What did the doctor say?"I didn't even bother looking at her. I didn't shout at her nor cry or wail in her fac

They squeaked in fright and dropped their steak knives onto the floor.Meanwhile, George shuddered hard the moment he saw Taylor. The glass of red wine in his hand fell to the floor, shattering and spilling the dark red liquid everywhere."T-Tay?"He shot to his feet at once, his face pale as a ghost. He stammered, "I-I didn't think you'd come over so quickly! I can explain! I was only just—""You were only just about to be electrocuted to death earlier, weren't you?"She stormed into the living room, soaked to the skin. Raindrops slid down her hair and dripped down from her chin, forming a little puddle between her feet. She glared at George, her eyes red and bloodshot, making her look like she was ready to tear him apart with her bare hands."All you had to do was re
