Kayla’s POV

I ran.

Branches tore at my clothes and slapped my face, but I only tightened my hold on Kaelith and kept moving. Her body hung limp in my arms, her head resting against my shoulder, her breath so faint I could barely feel it. My legs should have given out, yet they didn’t. Something else was moving me.

The voice.

Deep. Baritone. Heavy, like thunder trapped inside a cave. It slid into my bones and reverberated through them until my skull felt full of it.

“Kayla…”

It began the moment Veylor placed Kaelith in my arms.

My plan had been simple at first: hide her in my room, lock the door, and keep everyone away.

But the instant I reached the entrance, it happened.

“Kayla!”

I froze.

For a second I thought it was Veylor, or Corven, or even Tallis. I spun, searching the chaos, but they were still fighting and shouting, too consumed with tearing each other apart to notice anything else.

I turned to go inside the house.

“Kayla…”

This time it came like a breath against the back of m

  • STRANGER ATTRACTION    The Elders Lied

“We’re running out of time.”That was the only thing the strange man in white said to me. He did not answer my question. He did not even act like he heard me at all. He simply spoke, and the sound rolled through the air like distant thunder. He turned away from me immediately after speaking. He didn’t walk.He whipped around, his white cloak flowing after him a second too late, and the suddenness of it tore a gasp from me. Fear shot through me so fast my knees weakened. I staggered backward, my heel skidding on gravel near the cliff edge. The world tilted, and the wind roared up from below.I almost went over.I flung my arms out, reaching for anything at all, and before I could even scream, his hand was already wrapped around my wrist. He had appeared from nowhere, his grip iron. His skin felt cold, like something that had forgotten warmth long ago. He pulled me forward with frightening ease, steadying me as if I were a child who had simply tripped. The moment I found my balance, he

  • STRANGER ATTRACTION    I Am A Nobody!!

I was thrown out like some used piece of rag, my back slamming into the dirt, dust bursting around me. Laughter didn’t follow. Something worse did. Silence. Heavy, judging silence. Almost half of Ashwood stood there, watching me like I was filth dragged out of a sacred place.Humiliated. Bruised. Bleeding. But none of that mattered.Finding Kaelith before it was too late—that was all that mattered.I pushed myself up slowly, my body screaming in protest. The crowd had grown thicker. More faces. More eyes. They pierced into me from every angle. Some stared with disgust, as if I were a curse that had fallen on their town. Some looked with pity, the kind that carried no intention of helping. Others watched like they wished I would vanish, as if my very presence poisoned the air. They did not understand. They just did not understand.Kaelith could die.The weight of their stares crushed the last shred of composure I had left.“What is wrong with all of you?!” I shouted, my voice tearing t

Iris left her sisters behind and rushed toward me. Kaelith lay in my arms, her weight light, terrifyingly light. Iris placed her hands over mine, touching Kaelith as if that alone gave her some right.“Veylor, you’re here?” she said breathlessly. “And—and what are you doing with Kaelith? Where are you taking her?”I shifted slightly and shook her hands off me. My arms tightened around Kaelith without thinking.“I’m taking her to the hospital. She needs intensive care,” I said, my voice hard, my gaze locked on the men ahead, their faces twisted with rage.“What hospital?” Iris snapped. “We don’t have any here. So where exactly are you taking her?”My gaze flew back to her. She stepped closer again, trying to loosen my grip on Kaelith, her fingers digging into my arm. I shoved her away and walked past her without another word. One of the men stepped forward, fists clenched, but the other grabbed his arm and held him back. They both watched me as I reached them.“Please,” I said, forcing

“Listen to me, Veylor,” Kayla pleaded. “Her brothers and sisters are out trying to get help for her and their papa. An elder is inside with them, watching over both of them. You need to leave. Please. Now.”“No,” I said firmly, shaking my head. “I will not leave without seeing Kaelith. And I will not leave her here without proper medical care. Not now. Not ever.”“We do not have any in Ashwood, remember? Just leave, Veylor. Leave while you still can,” Kayla cried.“I do not care,” I shot back. “Even if I have to take her out of Ashwood, I will. I am not leaving here without her!”I brushed past Kayla and broke into a run toward Kaelith’s house. I did not knock. I shoved the door open and barged in.The sitting room was dim. An old woman sat in the middle of it, burning incense in a small clay bowl, rocking slightly as she mumbled words I could not make out. Her skin was deeply lined, her gray hair tied back loosely, her eyes half-closed, as if somewhere far away.“Ma’am,” I said breat

  • STRANGER ATTRACTION    Then who spread the rumor?

Kayla laughed bitterly.“Why would I, Veylor? So you can finish what you started?”That was it.“Oh please,” I snapped. “Not again. Not again! I am sick and tired of asking the same question while everyone keeps accusing me without telling me anything. What have I done that I don’t know about?”Her lips curled. She stepped away from her door and walked right up to me, eyes sharp and unforgiving.“What haven’t you done?” she said coldly. “You’re the reason everything happened the way it did.”She scoffed, her gaze sweeping over me like she was searching for something and finding nothing.“I wonder what she ever saw in you that she let it happen.”Her words hit me like a blow to the chest.“Let what happen?” I shouted. “Oh my god. Oh my fucking god, Kayla!”I was panting now, my heart slamming hard against my ribs, veins buzzing like they were on fire. I forced myself to breathe in, then out.“Okay, Kayla,” I said, holding up a hand. “Let’s do it like this. No more beating around the bu
