I held onto Kayla much longer until she gently pulled back.

“Now let’s get back to work,” she said, wiping the tears from my face. “Remember, we have a lot to do, and we still need to go over to Sir Henry’s. After that, we have to introduce ourselves to other people who might need help.”

I nodded. “Alright. See you later.”

She hurried off to continue working while I headed for the stairs. The moment my feet touched the last step, I froze.

Ethan stood a few feet away, as though he had been waiti

“Kaelith, that person you saw in your kitchen was not me. That is the truth.”Horris’s voice cut through the silence, sharp and serious, and my heart sank to my stomach.I stared at him, lips parted, thoughts tangling. If it really wasn’t him, then who had stood behind me in the kitchen, speaking with his voice and face?“If it really wasn’t you, then—” I started, but he raised a hand to stop me.“I honestly do not know who it was,” he said. “But if you can remember everything that person said, it might help us understand what is happening. And you should not have even considered what you tried to do. It was dangerous, reckless. You could have gotten yourself killed.”My gaze fell to the floor. My hands felt icy.“I… I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I thought you were hiding things from me. I thought you believed I couldn’t handle the truth.”“You think you can,” he said quietly, “but you cannot.”Kayla’s voice cut in, trembling and sharp. “I saw my life flash before my eyes. She would have

“I—I don’t know what you’re talking about. Please just let me go. I didn’t mean to spy on any conversation. I just wanted to know the truth,” I said, the words spilling out in panic.“Lies!” her voice rose, sharp and filled with disgust. “And I detest it.”Horris pinned my wrist to the wall, and before I could understand what was happening, my other hand followed without him touching it. My eyes widened as I watched my arm lift and press against the wall on its own, as if an unseen force had seized it.When I turned back to him, his eyes had turned completely white. They began to glow, brightening in a way that made my heart slam violently against my ribs. It felt like he was about to strike me—or worse. I shut my eyes tightly, bracing myself. Then Kayla’s voice cut through the air.“Horris?! No!”My eyes flew open. Both Horris and I turned toward the door to see Kayla standing there, her body trembling.Horris released me at once. I dropped to the ground like a chain had been snapped

  • STRANGER ATTRACTION    Horris Mother

A step forward brought me directly in front of Horris, close enough to feel the faint pull that always surrounded him.I didn’t know where to begin. My ability had always come naturally. I never forced it or pushed it. Thoughts usually brushed against my mind without permission, like whispers carried by the wind. But with Horris, there was nothing. From the moment I entered his room, there had been only silence. No stray thought, no emotional echo, nothing at all. It was as if a wall had been built inside his head, shielding him from me in a way I could not penetrate. That scared me.I stepped back, shaking my head, hoping I could shake the fear out of it. My foot nudged the side of his chair, but he did not move—not even a twitch. He didn’t even breathe loudly; it felt as if he were underwater.I began pacing the room, my thoughts spiraling. What if something went wrong? What if I ruined something for him—or for myself? What if I saw something I was never meant to see?My hands pre

  • STRANGER ATTRACTION    It Was Not Me

I stayed awake all through the night, staring at the ceiling and replaying everything that had happened minutes ago. First, there was the old man in my dream, a presence I was still struggling to understand. Then Horris appeared in my kitchen and said things that made no sense and too much sense at the same time. What was really happening?I spent the entire night turning that question over in my head, again and again, until my thoughts began to blur. Somewhere between fear and exhaustion, I reached a conclusion. Horris had left when Iris interrupted us. He had not finished what he wanted to say. That meant I had to find him, and it had to be the first thing I did when morning came.My eyes shifted to the clock on the wall. I paused.“Huh?”I sat up, my heart jumping. “Where did all the time go? Six thirty already?”I rushed to the window and pulled the cotton curtain aside. Pale morning light spilled into the room. It was already day.Without wasting another second, I grabbed my slip

  • STRANGER ATTRACTION    The Unspoken

“Horris, my God, you scared me,” I whispered sharply. “How many times have I told you to stop appearing like that? The last time you came through my wall, now you show up like cold air. Come on, I’m just a girl.”I bent down and began picking up the broken pieces of the plate. My hands shook slightly as I gathered them.Horris did not speak. He did not even look at me. He only stood there, stiff and silent, like a statue that had been placed in the middle of my kitchen.I threw the pieces into the trash and walked past him. He did not move, not even when I brushed close enough to feel the cold around him.I stopped and turned back.Standing directly in front of him, I searched his eyes. Nothing. No flicker. No sign that he even knew I was there.“Are we doing this again?” I muttered. “Fine. Wherever you went this time, let me know when you get back.”I turned away and went back to fixing something to eat.Minutes passed. I counted them in my head. When I glanced back, Horris was still

  • STRANGER ATTRACTION    When He Dies…

“Who are you?” I asked, my voice unsteady as I stared at him, certain I had seen him somewhere before. He did not answer. He only watched me.I took a step closer, and that was when I noticed it. With every step I took toward him, his body seemed to grow. He stretched taller, broader, heavier, like the land itself was feeding his form. I should have stopped, but something unseen kept pushing me forward, urging my feet to move even when fear settled deep in my chest.By the time I reached him, he towered above me. I felt small, insignificant, like a speck standing before something ancient and endless. I lifted my gaze, still searching his face for familiarity, when something on his hand caught my eye.A seal.It was carved into the back of his palm, clear and glowing faintly. The same seal I had seen on the flag. The same one on my back.My breath hitched.“Who are you?” I asked again, slower this time.“I am the one you have been eager to find,” he said at last. His voice echoed, not
