Chapter 2

Author: Sweetie
Ever since my family went bankrupt, Mr. Sloan had been secretly scheming behind the scenes, trying every way to force me out of the family so he could set Lucy up with a more suitable match.

And now, I was finally giving him exactly what he wanted.

After hanging up the phone, I walked home alone through the rainy night. It took me three hours.

But the moment I stepped inside, I heard unmistakable moans drifting from the room. I froze mid-step and looked toward the open door.

Oscar was kneeling by the bed, servicing Lucy. The instant she saw me, Lucy yanked Oscar up from the floor and threw him onto the bed.

I wanted to leave, but my feet felt as heavy as lead—I couldn't lift them no matter how hard I tried. This was also the first time I saw with my own eyes just how debauched Lucy could be.

When it was over, Oscar climbed off the bed weakly and took the card Lucy handed him.

"Lucy, I freaking love you."

Lucy patted his cheek with casual intimacy. "If you're satisfied, then get going. Can't you see my husband's been standing at the door watching this whole time?"

Oscar shot me a look of pure provocation, then turned and planted one last lingering kiss on Lucy.

"Lucy, don't you forget about me now."

On his way out, he deliberately shouldered past me, knocking me to the ground.

I crumpled onto the floor, and the tears I'd been holding back spilled over uncontrollably.

Lucy walked up to me, tilting my chin up with one hand.

"Garrett, the pain you're feeling right now doesn't even come close to a fraction of what I went through. Do you have any idea how I felt when your mom handed me the divorce papers in the detention center?"

Tears streaked down my face. I opened my mouth, desperate to explain yet again.

"Lucy, I swear I didn't know anything about the divorce papers. It was my mom—"

Lucy cut me off sharply, "Enough with the innocent act! Your signature was right there on those papers!"

We'd had this same exchange countless times over the last three years. No matter how hard I tried to explain, she refused to believe me. And now, I no longer had the will to waste my breath.

I wiped the tears from my face. "Since you hate me so much, I'll just take my mom and leave."

Lucy dug her fingers into me and said through gritted teeth, "Garrett, don't you dare even think about leaving. You're going to stay by my side forever and atone for what you did!"

With that, she ordered someone to drag me upstairs and lock me in the attic.

This was her usual tactic. Whenever I brought up divorce or tried to leave, she'd have me locked in there to reflect and repent until I stopped mentioning leaving ever again.

But this time, she couldn't keep me caged anymore.

That night, the hospital suddenly called.

"Mr. Mueller, Ms. Sloan just gave the order to stop all of Ms. Schmidt's treatment. Given her condition, she may not make it through the night."

I immediately begged the hospital to resume Mom's treatment.

The nurse said hesitantly, "Ms. Sloan is a major shareholder of the hospital, and we also can't go against orders from the higher-ups."

I understood exactly what she meant. I hung up at once and called Lucy. The phone rang for a long time before she finally picked up.

"Lucy, please—you have to resume my mom's treatment," I begged frantically. "She's in a deep vegetative state and can't go a single moment without the ventilator."

Over the thumping bass of the music in the background, Lucy's low voice came through, "This is your punishment for wanting to leave."

"I'm sorry. I'll never mention leaving again, so I beg you to—"

A deep male voice drifted through from her end of the line. "Lucy, keep going. Don't stop."

The line went dead. When I called again, no one answered.

I grabbed whatever I could find in the attic and started smashing it against the lock. I didn't know how long I kept at it—only that by the time the lock finally rattled loose and I kicked the door open, both my hands were slick with blood.

The moment I was free, I ran toward the hospital like my life depended on it.

In the end, I was still too late. My mother had already closed her eyes forever.

Lucy's embrace stirred a feeling of revulsion deep within me. I forcefully pushed her away and said coldly, "I, for one, wish I never had to see you again."With that, I stepped past her and headed inside. But to my surprise, Lucy grabbed hold of my wrist and knelt down before me."Garrett, I'm sorry. Please forgive me. I got so trapped in my own head, convinced you'd betrayed my love. That's why I did all those things to hurt you. It's only during this time without you that I've been consumed with regret. "Garrett, I love you. Can we go back to the way things were?"I turned around and looked at Lucy kneeling before me, feeling not the slightest ripple of emotion."If you had said this to me a few months ago, I would've been overjoyed."After all, these were the words I had longed to hear every single moment during those three humiliating years by her side."But it's too late now. Lucy, I don't love you anymore. Every day of those three years I spent by your side was hell. It

In the morning, I made chicken soup and knocked on the door of my neighbor.Abigail Reese opened the door, and her eyes lit up noticeably when she saw me."Garrett, what can I do for you?"My gaze fell upon her bandaged right arm."With your arm out of commission, let me take care of your meals until the cast comes off," I said apologetically.Three months ago, Mr. Sloan had sent me to this remote border town, far from the bustling city. I had rented a room at the local guesthouse, intending to stay long-term.Abigail was a local and two years younger than me. After we'd only met a handful of times, she suddenly confessed to me, saying she had fallen for me at first sight. It really caught me off guard. Once I recovered, I turned her down flat.My three-year ordeal with Lucy had drained any hope I had for love, much less any belief in the idea of love at first sight.Fortunately, after being rejected, Abigail was quite gracious about it and didn't pester me excessively. Lucy seized Oscar by the chin and said viciously, "This is all your fault. If it weren't for you, Garrett and I would never have fought, and his mother wouldn't have died because of it."If you hadn't smashed Stacy's urn, how could Garrett have been driven to such despair that he sought death? I'm going to make you pay for everything you've done today!"When Oscar saw the ruthless ferocity in Lucy's eyes, he couldn't help but shudder. He hastily grabbed hold of her arm and said, "Lucy, what are you talking about? I have no idea what you mean."Lucy flung his hand away, her gaze utterly cold. "Strip him naked and throw him into the slum."Several bodyguards immediately seized and dragged Oscar out.Panic flooded through Oscar in an instant. He clung desperately to the doorframe, begging Lucy for forgiveness. But her expression remained cold and completely unmoved.Realizing there was no getting out of it that day, Oscar decided he might as well go down in flames."Lucy, you were

That dead body wasn't really me. So, to avoid any further complications and prevent Lucy from seeing through the ruse, Mr. Sloan had swiftly disposed of the body while she was still unconscious. Now, the fact that I had perished in the fire was ironclad.Lucy became so emotionally agitated that she shoved Mr. Sloan away."Garrett is my husband! Who gave you the right to cremate him without my consent? Give him back to me!"Mr. Sloan was knocked to the ground. But he ignored the pain and got up again, wrapping his arms around her."Lucy, I know you're heartbroken, but the dead cannot be brought back to life. You need to move on. In a few days, I'll set you up on a blind date with the heir of the Crawford fam—"Before Mr. Sloan could finish his sentence, Lucy had already cast him aside and run outside. She arrived at the cemetery and, seeing the serene smile of mine on the tombstone, could not help but kneel before my grave and wept bitterly. "Garrett, I'm sorry. I'm the one who g

Lucy froze for a few seconds before finding her voice. "What did you say?"Before she had even finished listening, she immediately sprang up and rushed outside. Oscar, who was nearby and had no idea what was going on, followed and grabbed her wrist."Lucy, where are you going?"Lucy flung his hand away and roared, "Get lost!"She drove through countless red lights, racing all the way from the nightclub back to the villa. By then, the fire had just been extinguished, and the bodyguards were carrying "my body" out.She fixed her gaze on the charred corpse."No, this isn't Garrett. This can't be him," she said, shaking her head. She charged into the villa, frantically searching everywhere and shouting, "Garrett, come out! You're just playing a prank on me, right?"Garrett, if you just come out, I'll forgive you. I won't ever hold it against you again that you wanted to divorce me.
