Earlier that morning, Archie walked along the pedestrian lane toward the university. The air was cool and slightly chilly. He had chosen to walk instead of taking the car. It wasn’t far, and he needed the time. The quiet of the streets helped him think, or at least he hoped it would.

He hadn’t slept. Not a minute.

Every time he closed his eyes, the memory replayed itself. The way Piper had looked up at him, the hesitation in her eyes, and then the feel of her lips on his. He hadn’t imagined it. She had kissed him back.

He couldn't believe it.

His heart gave a small, guilty flutter at the thought. ‘Piper,’ He said inwardly, drawing a breath. ‘Sweet, complicated Piper.’

Her lips had been softer than he had imagined, trembling slightly under his. She tasted faintly of mint. He had been ready for a slap, a scolding, maybe even a punch, but instead, she kissed him back.

That single moment felt like forever.

Then, she ran away.

Archie kicked at a loose pebble on the pavement, watching it

Piper stared at him, her mind struggling to catch up with his words, like what he said made no sense. She paused, looking up at him, swallowing as she gathered her thoughts. “What do you mean?” she asked softly. Archie's gaze was raw with a mixture of frustration and pain.“Earlier,” he began “You acted like you didn’t care. But now, suddenly, my wounds… they affect you?” His voice cracked slightly, betraying the hurt he was trying to hide. Piper could feel the weight behind his words. Her lips parted, searching for words, but they refused to come. She swallowed hard, forcing a sigh past her throat. “Look… I’m sorry for what happened. If Rollins knew the truth, he wouldn’t have touched you.”Archie shook his head sharply, cutting her off. “This isn’t about Rollins, Piper.” His eyes fell to the first aid kit lying on the grass. “You look at me like you’re trying to tell me something, but the next moment… you’re all over him.”“I-I didn’t mean for you to feel that way,” she admitted, he

“Oh, that’s right. I haven't told you, have I?” Sage said lightly. Her smile widened, blooming into something bright and really warm. “Molly Martins. She’s my therapist.”Piper froze.“You’re… seeing a therapist?” she asked, blinking in disbelief.Sage nodded with a pride so soft it almost glowed. “I thought it would be good to receive some sessions, to help me recover properly. She suggested I let my past go. And that’s exactly what I’ve done.” She lifted the scarf around her neck. “I also adjusted my sleep schedule. And I’ve started crocheting. That’s my newest hobby.” she grinned. Piper’s heart clenched painfully. When had all of this started? She looked at her mother’s face and guilt rippled through her chest. The constant bags she had grown used to seeing under Sage’s eyes were barely visible now. Her hair looked brushed. Her shoulders less hunched. She was smiling more. And Piper hadn’t noticed since they last spoke. Not once. She had been so occupied—by school, by Rollins, by

“I have wasted so much time dwelling on the past. I want to move on,” Sage whispered, her voice barely audible, but loud enough for Piper to hear. Her eyes were softer now, in contrast to Piper's. She looked peaceful, her gaze sweeping over the flames as a small smile spread on her lips. Ironically, the serenity in her mother's demeanor terrified Piper. “W-what are you saying, Mum?” Piper breathed. Her brows knitted together, her chest tightening as dread pressed against her ribs. She took a shaky step forward. “What do you mean you want to move on? I don't understand”Sage didn’t answer immediately. She only hugged her arms tighter around herself, like she needed to hold her own body together. “What’s not to understand, Piper?” she murmured. “Nothing I do will bring him back.”Her voice cracked at the end. But she forced the words out anyway. Piper felt her stomach sink with each word as Sage continued. “I spent years thinking I was obliged to get justice for his death,” she said

Little by little, the vast crowd lessened. What remained was a small cluster on the field: the ice hockey team, Piper, Cecil, Elsa, and her circle of friends.“That was a hell of a fight,” Theo said with an amused huff, nudging his friend beside him. “It was a misunderstanding,” Piper corrected quickly. Her voice was composed, but her hands trembled slightly as she lifted a handkerchief and began gently dabbing Rollins’ cheek. He stayed still under her touch, letting her clean the streaks of blood. She deliberately kept her back turned to Archie, refusing to let herself even glance at him.Piper's ears perked up when she heard Elsa. “Oh my chie chie, look at your handsome face,” Elsa pouted, stepping toward Archie with a look of concern. She snapped her fingers. “Napkin.”Her friends handed one over instantly, and she lifted it delicately to Archie’s face, wiping a smear of blood from his jaw.Piper’s stomach tightened painfully. It wasn’t jealousy, she wouldn’t call it that, but so

Piper’s head was still spinning, panic causing her mind to reel as she sprinted down the hallway toward the football field. Her breathing was ragged, her heart pounding as she ran, while behind her Cecil struggled to keep up.“Piper, slow down!” she wheezed. But Piper didn't even glance behind. The moment she stepped outside, she squinted at the sunlight. The field was swarming with students, lecturers, and members from different teams as if something catastrophic was happening.Which, unfortunately, it was.Piper's mind surged with intensifying panic as she struggled her way through the thick crowd. Archie and Rollins were beyond reason at this point.Earlier, a routine drill session had been happening. Coach Drew was barking orders, the players were running routes, and the sun was blazing hot. It was normal and peaceful.Until Rollins showed up, storming in with a demeanor that screamed fury. His brows were furrowed, his forehead creased, his breath uneven, his fists already clenc

“You’ve got some nerve, Piper.”Elsa folded her arms across her chest and leaned back against the desk, her chin lifted in her display of superiority. “Coming here to pull this stunt again,” she added, almost gritting. Her cheek still stung from the other day and was still looking a bit reddened despite the amount of ointment she put on it. She had spent days imagining all the ways she would make Piper and Cecil regret everything they had done, all the ways she would remind the school who she was.She should have been basking in her revenge right now, but a certain someone insisted she avoid doing anything ‘foolish’“I’m not here to pick a fight,” Piper said firmly. “And you shouldn’t either.” Her gaze flicked briefly to Elsa’s friends surrounding her, all of them staring at Piper as if she were something they had scraped off the bottom of their shoes.Piper lowered her voice. “I need to speak to you privately. It’s very important.”Elsa let out a loud, dismissive scoff and waved he
