The text message I'd sent to Atlas felt like setting off a grenade—reckless, terrifying, and strangely exhilarating. I hadn't heard anything back, but the silence was heavy. It meant he was waiting, watching for the smoke to clear to see the damage. And the damage was me, standing on the edge of breaking the only rules I had left.

I was at my locker, trying to focus on geometry, when a shadow fell over me. The sweet, cloying scent of jasmine perfume hit me first.

“Tamine, honey! You almost missed me,” Chloe chirped, her voice dripping with fake kindness.

Chloe. The person who, until Atlas ruined everything, I had foolishly called a friend. Now, she was just another piece of the Thorpe puzzle—a jealous enemy who constantly circled the brothers, hoping to grab one for herself. She wore her uniform with an expensive flare, and her smile never quite reached her eyes.

“What do you want, Chloe?” I asked, keeping my tone flat.

She held out a crumpled piece of paper, her pink acrylic nails per

  • Stuck between Hockey Player and his Quarterback Brother   The Chase

The drive home was a blur of paranoia. I kept checking the rearview mirror, my hands white-knuckled on the steering wheel. The black sedan—Atlas’s car—was gone, but the image of it pulling out of the darkness burned into my memory. It felt like a physical threat. It felt like I was being hunted.I burst into the house, slamming the door shut. My sister, Clara, was sitting on the couch, watching a loud cooking show.“Relax, Tamine, the house isn’t on fire,” Clara said, glancing over.“I think I was followed,” I whispered, leaning against the door, trying to get my breath back.Clara muted the TV, her expression changing instantly. “Followed? By who? Did you tell that creep who works at the library to leave you alone again?”I couldn’t tell her the truth. I couldn’t tell her I was on a secret date with a Thorpe.“No. Just... some guy in a big black car. He was watching the parking lot when I left the mall.” I kept my voice flat, minimizing the terror.Clara frowned. “Probably just someo

  • Stuck between Hockey Player and his Quarterback Brother   The New Rules

The air in Classroom 214 was thin and hot. I stood leaning against the desk, trying to breathe normally. My lips still felt hot from the kiss. My body still remembered the squeeze of the tiny closet.Evans was calm now. Too calm. He had already opened his Lit book, acting like nothing world-changing had just happened.“We have to set rules,” I said. My voice shook a little, but I made it strong.“Go ahead,” Evans said, tapping his pen on a page about Greek gods.“First rule: No more janitor closets,” I stated firmly. “That was stupid. We can’t get caught. If we get caught, Atlas wins. And I lose everything.”Evans looked up. His eyes were serious. “Agreed. No more janitor closets.”“Second rule: When we are in school, we are tutor and student. We talk about Homer. We look bored. We are never alone unless it is in this room, with the door open, during study hours.”“Door open, talking about Homer. Got it,” he repeated, nodding.“And third rule,” I said, looking down at my own hands. Th

  • Stuck between Hockey Player and his Quarterback Brother   Dangerous Intimacy

Tamine spent the rest of the day in a haze of adrenaline and confusion. The feel of Evans's heartbeat beneath her palm was a phantom sensation she couldn't shake, a stark, unwelcome proof that the rules designed to protect her were dissolving. She had lied to him about Atlas's cruel words, and he had seen right through her.The third tutoring session was supposed to happen in the library, but Tamine couldn't risk the watchful eyes of the librarians or the silent judgment of students. She texted Evans—a short, frantic message: Meet me outside the gym equipment shed after school. Don't be late. She got there first. The equipment shed was a forgotten metal box behind the gymnasium, next to the dusty, unused high jump pit. It was a chaotic, secluded spot that smelled strongly of old leather, sweat, and cut grass—the perfect, dangerous hideaway. When Evans arrived, he wasn't carrying his duffel bag or any books. He was just wearing a thin hoodie and jeans, looking less like the golden boy

The air behind the trophy case smelled like old brass and floor wax, but Tamine hardly noticed. Her mind was still trapped in the cruel echo of Atlas’s voice, specifically the part about the bet. She stared up at Evans, who was too close, too demanding, and far too solid for her panicked state.“Why did you do that?” Tamine repeated, but this time it wasn't a question; it was an accusation, laced with shame. “You didn’t help me, Evans, you just gave him more ammunition. Now they all think I’m part of the Thorpe drama again. They think I’m yours.”His jaw tightened. He didn't look like the golden boy anymore. He looked tired, maybe even angry. “He was humiliating you, Tamine. He said something cruel, didn't he? I don't give a damn what the hallway thinks. I want to know what he said that made you look like you were going to faint.”Tamine felt a surge of irrational fury. How dare he make her feel like a victim? How dare he assume she needed his protection? She took a steadying breath,

  • Stuck between Hockey Player and his Quarterback Brother   RUMOURS AND REALITIES

The feeling of Evans’s cheap, worn pen in her pocket was a constant, irritating reminder that her Rule Number Two was officially compromised. Tamine had spent the evening trying to convince herself that keeping the pen was simply a matter of principle—she was holding it hostage until he improved his grade but the truth was, she couldn't stop thinking about the serious, focused look in his eyes when he talked about earning something he wanted. It was this dizzying internal debate that made her completely unprepared for the ambush.Tamine was walking toward her locker during the crowded lunch break, navigating the sea of students with her head down, a practiced strategy. She felt a presence halt her path and looked up to see Atlas Thorpe leaning against the metal bank of lockers, a casual obstruction. He wasn't alone; his usual entourage of fellow Quarterback cronies and a couple of cheerleaders stood nearby, creating a little pocket of judgmental silence around them.Public humiliation
