Mag-log inYou know the popular saying; “After wedding Comes marriage.”
It wasn’t far-fetched in my fate. The royal guards had led us to Prince Reuben’s mansion in the palace but shortly afterwards, the queen had joined us. Notably, she didn’t come alone.
In her company was a short chubby man with a striking bald hair and an all-smiling face, which resembled that of my grandpa. She introduced him as Marshal, our personal guard.
According to the queen, Marshal would attend to our personal errands and ensured we never lacked any personal needs, be it official errands but I knew this Marshal of a guard was more of a spy than her intent.
The queen needed to place an eagle eye on us.
“Can we see briefly in the sitting room, Emily,” that was the voice of the queen, bits of uncertainty hung in her blue eyes and white face. I could notice her jaw drop, and it registered suspicion in my mind.
What was she suspecting and what did she take me for? All the while Imelda dated Queen Theresa, I never developed a closer rapport with her. She had visited our home a few times; just as my mother had told me but I never bonded with her in any pragmatic effort.
I raised a brow and noticed the paper in her hands. The prince came out shortly and took permission to join his cousin in the post-wedding party holding in the palace. I could see a few ballet dancers entertaining the guest while the royal chieftain and associates had fun which was displayed in their ocean of smiles.
Here I was standing before the queen, in a wedding gown that itched me so much with the constant reminder of who I was ; just a substitute wife in paper and nothing more.
The queen poured wine for two but I rejected mine, still curious like puppy about why she had invited me to the sitting room, when I should be resting in my room.
“Once again congratulations, dear, for substituting for your twin sister. Your twin sister and I have cultured a stronger relationship that is beyond marriage. I have been her fan and it was in one of those occasions when she visited the palace that she revealed to me about her dating the prince.”
The queen spoke with so much sincerity that I argued if she would ever approve of another woman getting married to the prince except Imelda.
“The substitute wife was my idea,” she continued after series of deep grinning, “I mean seeing you right now excites me with the picture of Imelda. I will give credence to identical creation. I see Imelda in you. Seeing you everyday will give me the feeling that she is in the marriage that is why I want you to substitute for her while you remain in the palace otherwise nothing stops me from ordering you to stay away.”
I swallowed hard, the curves of my face pumping in emotion that I really fought hard not to cry. I wish she was in this marriage not me and defiantly she would have to because she was not going to remain in a coma forever.
The queen told me how her palace doctors had joined the other private doctors to ensure Imelda didn’t last in that coma and more notably she had promised to do her best to bring her back to this marriage.
“It is a marriage in paper and nothing more,” the queen intoned emphatically, her eyelashes reminding me of certain obscure consequences I would have to arm myself with in the course of this marriage, “There are rules , Emily,” she tossed her head, this time her voice beaming.
I raised a brow and noticed her fingers gently sliding open the papers in her hand.
“The first and foremost rule is that there is no intimacy of whatsoever, no strings attached, no emotional feelings for the prince and vice versa. If such temptation comes do whatever you can to repel it. Am I understood?” she winked at me, hoping I got the message.
I bowed and tossed my head, daring to process those rules and getting them registered in my heart, while I thought I would never forget them or fall short.
“Your twin sister will be delighted to see that you stood in the gap for her and worthy of note that you kept her marriage without snatching her husband.”
“You know I wouldn’t do that, Her Royal Majesty,” I replied, this time just to officially concur to the rules and remind her of my intention in the marriage. “I just want to fill in that gap and that is all,” I added very calmly.
“Yes, you wouldn’t do that in words, but can you put pen to paper?” she placed he papers on the desk and forced a smile which beckoned on me to step forward. You shall sign today to abide by these rules. I don’t need to remind you of the consequences at your leisure you can read through. I will leave you with a copy. You shall personally read the consequences.”
I didn’t notice the anger in her tone than I noticed in her eyes. She focused on me as would a camera in the hands of paparazzi. I clenched on the pen, my hands trembling as I signed and dated.
I wondered why my hands trembled so much but before I could foster the reason for it, tears trickled down my cheeks. I wept because this wasn’t the way Imelda and I planned this, and I would ordinarily keep her marriage with or without a binding law.
Shortly after the queen left, I recoiled in my room, and noticed the camera planted at strategic positions and the short thick-looking guard, Marshall by name, standing on the corridor, that led to Prince Reuben’s room.
It just recurred to me now that Marshall was just there for a reason and of course, it was to monitor us and give detailed report about us to the queen.
Right now I felt less than a caretaker and I didn’t have issues with that either. I had a boyfriend whom I loved so much and all my feelings and emotional needs were tied to him. I didn’t see myself getting intimate with the prince.
“I won’t fail you Imelda. But, please, wake up soon and take your place,” I mumbled in tears , my gaze on her photo.
Emily’s Point Of ViewThe State Visit and Banquet had a formal aura of honor and orderliness. The heads of States that visited were greeted with a ceremonial welcome, including a guard of honor and gun salutes, which was done on a horse guards parade.Imelda and I were adorned in our bedgown, and expensive jewelry, and the queen didn’t know I heard her say to Imelda to return to her closet and change into a unique attire. She told her she shouldn’t share attire with me and she had a role to play as a princess.“You are royalty. Emily is not, so get going,” she affirmed through clenched teeth when Imelda protested. In a jiffy Imelda left and stepped out in a tea-length dress which had polka dots. Points upon facts had proven the queen had never liked me. It was obvious how much the queen despised me. Once she stepped to the queen she tossed her head and smiled heartily.I dared to force out a smile, but I couldn’t. I just wanted to give her the impression I was fine with the queen’s de
Emily’s Point Of View“I want us to look elegant and adorable and of course inseparable in today’s State Visits and Banquets,” that was the voice of Imelda to me as I inspected the bedgown she bought for me. she kept smiling from cheek to cheek as I gaped at the splendor of the gown.“This is beautiful, sis. Oh my god! Oh my god!” I kept covering my mouth as I inspected the formal attire, “Oh this must have cost you so much, sister. Why are you spending so much on me. I am not even a princess yet you are making me feel like one…”“Oh stop bluffing Emily. You are a princess. When I was in a coma I guess the maids and guards must have referred to you as Princess Emily.” She reached for the sack in the bed and took out some silver stilettos and a box I perceived to be jewelry, “You are not just my sister but my only sister and my twin for that matter. If I don’t take care of you then who will. I wish I could even convince the queen to crown you a princess…”We burst into a huge laughter
Emily’s Point of viewI couldn’t stop appreciating Doctor Bill for keeping his side of the secret. Thus far he had acted professionally and never revealed what I intended to leave in the dark forever. Just like everyone he was fascinated to know the whereabouts of Jaden. But this time, I didn’t reveal anything about the murder to him. I had to keep him in the dark where I kept others. I had promised Uncle Charles nobody must not know about the murder.“Oh, I just pray he is safe wherever he is,” Doctor Bill sounded, his eyes rolling behind his glasses, “You know, I was relieved when I saw a man had come into your life to father those babies. But I heard he is a gangster. Is he really one?” he asked gently.I lowered my gaze, feeling like overshadowing anything about Jaden so I could discuss my reason for coming. I had to shake my head without uttering a word. His face grew a bit gravy. I knew he may be putting me in the box of women that had poor choices when it came to men.“Doctor,
Emily’s Point of ViewThe well toned hand squeezed her belly softly before she stared in the mirror. It was Imelda. Her gaze came on the calendar and she widened her gaze to contemplate deeply. Time was fast spent.Today marked one year in marriage, and she had never felt anything close to pregnancy. When she woke up this morning, she had made up her mind to visit Doctor Bill for a pregnancy test.“Oh God I need a miracle,” she mumbled within herself and kept rubbing her stomach, hoping her first child was in there by now. When she rose this morning, she felt a bit weak and fragile. She dimmed her eyes once she noticed that today was the hosting of a crucial royal event.State visits and banquets. The Welsh palace often hosted this event with foreign dignitaries and investitures.“I thought I would surprise my prince-charming with the news of pregnancy today,” she sounded in a teary tone, her face getting meshed in tears and hurt as she stared in the mirror and kept rubbing her stomac
Imeda’s Point of ViewWe had barely thrown a few steps into the palace when one of the maids approached us with a bow and told me Queen Theresa would want to break words with me. At the time I saw the mixed reaction on the face of Emily, and I could tell she was already suspecting it was about her and missing Jaden.I gave her a smile and she struggled to return the complement. With a whisper of assurance to her, I left with the maid.Queen Theresa was admiring one of the most expensive works of art in the history of Welsh royalty. She had her back at me when I stepped in and I had barely settled when she told me to make myself comfortable, and ordered her guards and maids to leave.I was restless like a mouse. Whenever she had something vital or disturbing to tell me she often invited me to her private ball room. And right now appearing in this exquisite room, gave me no aura than that of a troubled soul. These days, two things hung on my mind whenever I saw the queen. Her quest for
Emily’s Point of ViewAll through the time we spent on the carriage riding back to the palace, Imelda kept at her silence but never stopped screwing her face at me as if she was suspecting me of something. I would have been engaged inwardly with my secret sins and the fate that awaited me.But I needed to talk to someone, and I didn’t know if she was in the right mood. I knew the scene that turned out at the station had rattled her cage in one way or the other, and to that I needed to know what she was thinking of me and what action she would take when we got to the palace.I held her arms, and she gently turned to lock gaze with me, “Apologies for stressing you, sis,” my mumbling ended in whistling, as if I wasn’t sure of my next words, “I…I shouldn’t have dated a gangster in the first place,” my stuttering was intentional. Her eyes sprouted exhaustion but not really a sign of doubt. We had never doubted each other and we believed we were the most righteous souls on earth. Our loyalt
