LOGINEmily’s POV
“Emily you have been chosen as the substitute wife for Prince Reuben,”
Those words of my uncle still hung in my heart as I stared at my twin sister, still unconscious under the oxygen mask.
That same hour Uncle Charles had revealed it to me; my mom held me by the arm and led me to our lobby where she unveiled everything to me in detail.
Queen Theresa had always loved Imelda and didn’t want to lose such a talented, intelligent beautiful hockey player for a sister-in-law. Her love for hockey had invested so much in this rare admiration that she started fanning Imelda even before Prince Reuben dated her.
“Since the coma is going to last for one week,” mom said to me, her face peeled with tears, and a longing in her eyes that made me think I was the only savior for Imelda’s marriage. “Queen Theresa believes your sister should wake up and take over from you. She doesn’t want the marriage to be annulled. That is why we want you to substitute for Imelda.”
“Substitute bride?” I retorted, gaping at her and still trying to process those words in a seamless way that wouldn’t make me take them for a death sentence.
That very night mom had pestered me with the issue at hand and it put me in the picture of rejecting it. Although I wondered why I would reject such an offer for my twin sister, who had been more loyal, it still didn’t steal form my mind all she had done for me.
She had abandoned her tournament several times and stayed with me in the hospital when I was diagnosed of pleurisy. She had donated her pints of blood to me when I was anemic.
And now this is the most maddening of it; we shared a common kidney, because she had also donated one of her kidneys to me, when I became alcoholic and had a kidney failure.
Our growing up was clouded with sacrifices and loyalty with much of it coming form Imelda.
And I would never forget the days we walked in the park, holding hands and promising to be there for each other. This was more than an oath. It was a soul to soul bonding that cemented our sisterhood.
Holding my mother’s tiny fingers firmly I had assured her, “I will do it, mom. I will do anything for Imelda. This is the only time I can repay her for all the indelible sacrifices she had done for me.” I had assured my mother and she had appreciated me with a warm hug.
Staring at Imelda right now, sucked tears from my eyes because this wasn’t the way we planned it. We had planned her wedding to be more impressive than any wedding in the history of Wales.
In my hands was the list of the trends we had planned to do on her wedding day and I didn’t see anything that sounded like substitute wife.
“I wish you would just wake up now, twiny,” I wailed, I often called her twiny just as she often did the same too. I sniffed hard as I held her cold palms and prayed for her prompt recovery. “Tomorrow is your wedding with Prince Reuben, but you are not fit to do it,” I sobbed and swallowed hard, my gaze feeding into her face to see if she would click an eye lash, just to remind me that she was back from coma.
But she kept still, helpless lonely and abandoned by destiny.
“I have been chosen to be the substitute wife so that when you wake up, you can take your place as the legal wife of Prince Reuben. I hope you permit this,” I wailed deeply, feeling uncontrollably loosed within my will power.
I wanted to speak yet further but I couldn’t. My trembling lips shivered like the strings of a guitar. I was broken and deep down my conscience I really didn’t want to be the substitute wife. This was not the way I wanted to repay her in the actual sense.
The wedding drew near and became more realistic to me. The royal fanfare was huge throughout the kingdom of Wales. Most fans and dignitaries mistook me for Imelda, the identical looks were indeed skin deep.
The only trait that differentiated me from Imelda was the curves and bust. I was a bit more curvaceous and busty while she wasn’t, owing to her commitment to hockey and regular strenuous workout.
I was decorated royally; the pride and elegance of a princess hung over me and grazed my path. A few minutes to the exchange of vows between me and Prince Reuben, the palace did hanging of the guard, and horse guard parade.
Indeed it was a royal wedding and a beauty to behold.
Mom and uncle Charles held me on both hands as we matched out to meet Prince Reuben at the altar. Shortly after the priest joined us, the marriage jury stepped out for the registry. We exchanged vows but didn’t commit to kissing to crown our conjugal bliss.
I was moody and all frown; my nerves were pumped and pulse was racing; the ground underneath trembled and I felt my knees going path ways as soon as they smashed.
Most of the fans thought I was Imelda but as soon as they noticed the striking differences they sighed and coiled into their shell of hopelessness.
Prince Reuben managed to hold my hands; at least it was a wedding, though it was one in paper and not intimacy. Mom and Uncle Charles flashed a contagious smile at me just to initiate me to return th compliment, but I didn’t respond.
The picture of Imelda under the oxygen mask had beclouded my thought all through the wedding session. But in all I often encouraged myself with the words, “I am just a substitute wife and it will last just for a week since Imelda will wake up soon.”
Did it actually happen as I thought?
Emily’s Point Of ViewThe State Visit and Banquet had a formal aura of honor and orderliness. The heads of States that visited were greeted with a ceremonial welcome, including a guard of honor and gun salutes, which was done on a horse guards parade.Imelda and I were adorned in our bedgown, and expensive jewelry, and the queen didn’t know I heard her say to Imelda to return to her closet and change into a unique attire. She told her she shouldn’t share attire with me and she had a role to play as a princess.“You are royalty. Emily is not, so get going,” she affirmed through clenched teeth when Imelda protested. In a jiffy Imelda left and stepped out in a tea-length dress which had polka dots. Points upon facts had proven the queen had never liked me. It was obvious how much the queen despised me. Once she stepped to the queen she tossed her head and smiled heartily.I dared to force out a smile, but I couldn’t. I just wanted to give her the impression I was fine with the queen’s de
Emily’s Point Of View“I want us to look elegant and adorable and of course inseparable in today’s State Visits and Banquets,” that was the voice of Imelda to me as I inspected the bedgown she bought for me. she kept smiling from cheek to cheek as I gaped at the splendor of the gown.“This is beautiful, sis. Oh my god! Oh my god!” I kept covering my mouth as I inspected the formal attire, “Oh this must have cost you so much, sister. Why are you spending so much on me. I am not even a princess yet you are making me feel like one…”“Oh stop bluffing Emily. You are a princess. When I was in a coma I guess the maids and guards must have referred to you as Princess Emily.” She reached for the sack in the bed and took out some silver stilettos and a box I perceived to be jewelry, “You are not just my sister but my only sister and my twin for that matter. If I don’t take care of you then who will. I wish I could even convince the queen to crown you a princess…”We burst into a huge laughter
Emily’s Point of viewI couldn’t stop appreciating Doctor Bill for keeping his side of the secret. Thus far he had acted professionally and never revealed what I intended to leave in the dark forever. Just like everyone he was fascinated to know the whereabouts of Jaden. But this time, I didn’t reveal anything about the murder to him. I had to keep him in the dark where I kept others. I had promised Uncle Charles nobody must not know about the murder.“Oh, I just pray he is safe wherever he is,” Doctor Bill sounded, his eyes rolling behind his glasses, “You know, I was relieved when I saw a man had come into your life to father those babies. But I heard he is a gangster. Is he really one?” he asked gently.I lowered my gaze, feeling like overshadowing anything about Jaden so I could discuss my reason for coming. I had to shake my head without uttering a word. His face grew a bit gravy. I knew he may be putting me in the box of women that had poor choices when it came to men.“Doctor,
Emily’s Point of ViewThe well toned hand squeezed her belly softly before she stared in the mirror. It was Imelda. Her gaze came on the calendar and she widened her gaze to contemplate deeply. Time was fast spent.Today marked one year in marriage, and she had never felt anything close to pregnancy. When she woke up this morning, she had made up her mind to visit Doctor Bill for a pregnancy test.“Oh God I need a miracle,” she mumbled within herself and kept rubbing her stomach, hoping her first child was in there by now. When she rose this morning, she felt a bit weak and fragile. She dimmed her eyes once she noticed that today was the hosting of a crucial royal event.State visits and banquets. The Welsh palace often hosted this event with foreign dignitaries and investitures.“I thought I would surprise my prince-charming with the news of pregnancy today,” she sounded in a teary tone, her face getting meshed in tears and hurt as she stared in the mirror and kept rubbing her stomac
Imeda’s Point of ViewWe had barely thrown a few steps into the palace when one of the maids approached us with a bow and told me Queen Theresa would want to break words with me. At the time I saw the mixed reaction on the face of Emily, and I could tell she was already suspecting it was about her and missing Jaden.I gave her a smile and she struggled to return the complement. With a whisper of assurance to her, I left with the maid.Queen Theresa was admiring one of the most expensive works of art in the history of Welsh royalty. She had her back at me when I stepped in and I had barely settled when she told me to make myself comfortable, and ordered her guards and maids to leave.I was restless like a mouse. Whenever she had something vital or disturbing to tell me she often invited me to her private ball room. And right now appearing in this exquisite room, gave me no aura than that of a troubled soul. These days, two things hung on my mind whenever I saw the queen. Her quest for
Emily’s Point of ViewAll through the time we spent on the carriage riding back to the palace, Imelda kept at her silence but never stopped screwing her face at me as if she was suspecting me of something. I would have been engaged inwardly with my secret sins and the fate that awaited me.But I needed to talk to someone, and I didn’t know if she was in the right mood. I knew the scene that turned out at the station had rattled her cage in one way or the other, and to that I needed to know what she was thinking of me and what action she would take when we got to the palace.I held her arms, and she gently turned to lock gaze with me, “Apologies for stressing you, sis,” my mumbling ended in whistling, as if I wasn’t sure of my next words, “I…I shouldn’t have dated a gangster in the first place,” my stuttering was intentional. Her eyes sprouted exhaustion but not really a sign of doubt. We had never doubted each other and we believed we were the most righteous souls on earth. Our loyalt
