Emily’s POV

The dawn of the day struck me with the light of reality and waking up under the royal roof of the Wales made me long for the appearance of my twin sister sooner than expected.

I could still recall Imelda telling me after her successful career in hockey, she would want to be a dutiful royal wife to the prince. She had craved royalty and she was bent on getting it but ill fate said otherwise.

Her sizable picture was always at the edge of my bed and keeping her marriage was the only sacrifice I owed a twin sister that had given me her all, yes her all in ramifications.

This morning as I dressed up for work , the scar on the right side of my stomach replayed that moment Imelda held my  face in the hospital bed and told me, “I will donate one of my kidneys to you. We don’t need to search any further for an eligible donor.”

Although I fought back tears and dared to fit into this marriage, my eyes reddened with shades of anticipation for Imelda s’ redemption from that coma. I didn’t need to stay back and enjoy the bliss of a newly wedded couple. I wasn’t one.

I didn’t regard myself in the picture of a wife. The other day my mother had visited me and told me the same thing the queen had made me sign.

“Please, Emily, do this for your twin sister. Help her to keep this marriage. Please, there shouldn’t be any record of intimacy.”

Once she said that, she squeezed my fingers as if to make it more meaningful to me, I concurred with a nod and didn’t see the possibility of getting intimate with Prince Reuben.

First, he wasn’t my kind of man; he was slim, not well-built but tall, short-haired and conical-eyed.

This was unlike my boyfriend, David who had an alpha body earned form the gym, long-haired, dash-eyed.

“Hi,” Prince Reuben said to me when we met in the sitting room. I replied and our faces were concealed with frowns as if we were warned to be enemies in this brief marriage.

“Breakfast is served,” he reminded me as the maids dished them out.

I appreciated his concern but told him I was late for work. He accepted with the nod of his head and lowered his gaze to eat with a blank gaze and the corner of his eyes stylishly stealing a glance at me.

When I got outside I noticed a royal carriage, with the nicest charming decoration, was already waiting for me. And in the garage was my car. I didn’t know what plan royalty had today.

As I approached my car, one of the guards bowed to me and restricted me with a nod of disapproval. He told me no royal blood was allowed to drive in a car today, except on permission by the prince or the queen.

All possible means to stop him proved abortive. When my protest intensified, Prince Reuben stepped out and brought me to order.

“That is the law guarding the palace every Wednesday, Emily. As a royal wife and a princess you must drive in a carriage today,” he intoned, with shades of contagious smile on his face.

“But I am not one. I am only substituting for my sister, so I should be allowed to live ,my normal life,” I argued.

“On the contrary, Emily you are my wife, the princess and must be treated as one until your sister wakes from the coma. Hence forth, you don’t have a normal life, Emily,” he bickered.

Although, I obeyed , my face hardened as I stepped into the carriage. First, the perfect definition of intimacy that occurred to me was seeing myself as his wife and the princess, so I avoided it, and taking orders from a man that has been overfed with power.

A skyscraper loomed on as the carriage approached; that was Wales Commercial Bank, and I was the manager. From my spot, I could see the well-built figure staring out through the window. That was David, my phenomenal boyfriend. He was the general manager.

The impromptu wedding had happened when he was on a symposium in Scotland. He didn’t return my calls. He didn’t reply my messages either, but I owed him an apology. Obviously, he burned with anger.

As soon as he heard the knocking of my heels on the floor, he came out of his office, fury peeling from his face.

“Good morning Princess Emily,” he greeted but with the intention of mockery.

“I am sorry sweetie, but we need to talk,” I paused to stare at him with the guilt of an offender

“We are already talking,” he grinned sourly and narrowed his gaze at me when I stepped into my office and left the door open for him to enter.

“My twin sister is in a coma. You must have heard about it on the news…”

“Imelda being in a coma is no news,” his harsh tone banged at me than any bullet of war.

“Excuse me,” I replied and saw the fury that clouded his eyes.

“Your twin sister is in coma and you are substitute for her, the chosen wife and princess to Prince Reuben, your dream life come true.”

“Stop this David,” I snapped and hesitated to pour my anger on him, “The only thing I owe you is apology, even when you owe me one for not picking my calls. I am sorry things have to go this way but I am still your girlfriend. I am just a substitute wife and nothing more…”

He scoffed, “You must be kidding me, Prince …eess Emily ,” he stressed the syllables mockingly and continued,  “You must be a fool for thinking you can be his wife without any form of intimacy . Have you forgotten your weakness? Only God knows if you have not been cheating on me with him when he dated your sister.”

“David?” I howled and broke down in tears.

He clenched his jaw, “We have dated for seven years, Emily, let me remind you that you have a choice to make. You will return to the Wales’ palace and withdraw your interest in the substitute wife or we call it a quit. You have twenty four hours.”

“David! David!” I called as he walked out on me, banging the door.

When I got to the palace i had needles in my guts and was ready to off the gloves with the prince for not visiting Imelda. It was really heartbreaking that Prince Reuben hadn’t visited my sister ever since she went into a coma. The huge aroma of fried egg and salmon fish crept into my nose the moment i entered my room and my gaze came on the dish. With a huge sigh, I grabbed it and flushed into the toilet. My heart thudded with hurt as I gazed on Imelda’s picture. I could hear some voices in the corridor; obviously it was that of the prince and the guard, Marshal.I had noticed Marshal, the guard often stood on the corridor that separated my room from the prince’s room. He never left that spot, and I was beginning to believe he was there for a purpose.Prince Reuben shot an investigative gaze at Marshal, the moment their eyes locked. The prince was bare-chested in his white towel. For a moment he stared at the guard ignoring his salutation.“Do I still need to know that the queen kept

I wondered why he would treat Imelda like a total stranger.I spent a couple of minutes to reflect on my strategy in this marriage and after reminding Imelda of my promised of keeping her marriage clean, I decided to leave for the palace.About stepping out of the ward I almost bumped into a young tall huge man. With my sack letter in one hand and a get-well-soon card in the other, I stared at Imelda who was still helpless under the oxygen mask. The fact was that I wanted to weep but there were no tears. My face grew gravy as I shut my eyes in pain and then dropped the card by the side of the bed, where others were.“I have just lost my job, Imelda, also David has broken up with me,” my lone voice whispered to her as if she could hear me and sympathize with me. But that had been my decision. Any time I am around to pass the night, I often treated her as if she was conscious.I knew my twin sister wasn’t dead. She could hear me and soon she would trump up to life. So I had to tell her David had sacked me and called off our relationship. This was a relationship of five years. We had one month to go; just one month to become married couple. I didn’t expect our break up to come in this maxim; it was so shameful and maddening; David demanded for his diamond engagement ring?Oh my God!He had stole

  • Substitute Wife For The Cold-Hearted Prince   Could this be Love?

Only an obsessive soul could explain why I often wake up to behold hot aromatic breakfast smiling at me by the bed side. For the past few weeks, it has recurred. Prince Reuben was fond of preparing my breakfast and serving me in bed. This morning a knock on my door woke me up and when I answered, there he was standing and glistening with a contagious smile. Most times, I wondered if those smiles ever left his face, or it was just because of me.Several times I had told myself he was ugly just to repel him but truth be told Prince Reuben was a cute young man to behold; his long nose and sizable lips were perfectly created in tandem with his green brooding eyes. I knew he must have pulled girls with those eyes features.Although he had the features any girl could crave in men, it wasn’t my problem because my boyfriend had better features.David was my obsession. I really loved David.“I didn’t want to disturb your sleep to ask you what you would love for breakfast,” That was the voice o
